very happy to share their most sensitive of data
Plenty of people just share links to things they find interesting, some of their random thoughts that don't deal with anything sensitive, and some photos that don't reveal anything more than what is seen of them in public--plenty of use that doesn't share anything actually sensitive.

If that were only possible, but you are naive to think that the average FB user will switch. We techie types would love to, but in this day and age convincing the majority of your family and friends to abandon FB is not going to happen, so we are stuck with FB or with little or no contact with family and friends. That is just the way it is, like it or not. Everyone is used to FB now, and expecting them all to agree to switch to another single platform is so naive as to be laughable. So if you are a loner, then switch if you want to. But if you have a lot of family and friends on FB, you are pretty much stuck with it for now, assuming you want to stay in contact with them.
So, you're saying that, because family and friends are on FB, you cannot choose to interact with them in a non-FB way (text, phone, email, etc.)? My sister is a FB nut, and lives halfway across the country, but I have no problem keeping in touch with her in other ways besides FB (and I haven't used FB in years). Just saying. You can still make a different choice.

I wasn’t keen on FB when all of my friends were leaving MySpace for it. I didn’t like that FB required our real names. That was the red flag right there. Why do you need my real name FB, why? Tom didn’t need my real name. Zuckerberg’s philosophy concerned me - this open sharing with everyone who knows you. No, Mark, that’s not a good philosophy in real life, and it’s clear that’s not a good philosophy on FB either.

Eventually I joined and thought it was cool to suddenly be able to find people I hadn’t seen in years and all that. It was cool until I realized that I lost touch with a lot of these people for a reason. Some still stuck in high school and others who aren’t doing much with their lives. Some with crazy thoughts that probably shouldn’t be posted under their real names, but they think because their profile is set to “private” it will be okay. Poor things wonder why it’s so hard to find a job...

Let’s not get started on the over sharers who must upload 500 pics of their vacation. Or the ones who have given away their children’s privacy before they can even decide as there are chronicles for every milestone and then some from birth to college graduation. I don’t care one way or another about pet pics, but I’m concerned with the obsession that some seem to have with Fido or Mittens.

I have a profile on there that I need to delete at this point. I haven’t touched it in a few months and only because older family members insist on coordinating family reunions on there. When the elders in the family can use social media, it’s just too much. Don’t post too much or some cousin will message you for a loan.

True friends and family know how to reach me. Though I do have some people I met in recent years that I would like to follow. Unfortunately, it’s not worth it to me overall.

You can also use FB in the social network superficial manner that still applies to it like before, just to stay in touch and see what others post basically and nothing that involves or reveals anything deeper than that.

No surprise here...if something is free, not matter how great or useful, have zero expectation that your best interests are protected or even considered.

Realistically speaking even non-free services/companies have had breaches.

Only use FB for events and even then they often reintroduce bugs that prevent from saving events. I'd report it, shortly after it starts working again and they'd just close my ticket without saying anything.

Stop using Facebook people! There is a better and safer alternative to each fb feature. I can't think of a single good reason to still be on Facebook - there are none.
There is always a better alternative for almost everything. I've been on FB for 10 years and I don't regret any single day. It is like my personal (and yes, public) diary. I don't really care if it is public. I don't care if my pictures are stolen or accessed by a hacker. I'm not a public person, no one realy cares other tan my contacts (and not to all my contacts of course).

Now after 10 years some times I get reminders from my old posts … like the time my first son lost his first tooth or the day I visited the Statue of Liberty or the day I went to a Rolling Stones concert … priceless. I'm sure there are better ways of doing it … but I like this one and I am used to it and have already some history on it. It is like someone telling you, hey why don't you get an

Facebook this morning announced that its engineering team on Tuesday discovered that hackers have exploited a vulnerability in its code, allowing hackers to steal Facebook access tokens for almost 50 million accounts.

According to Facebook, hackers took advantage of security flaws in its "View As" code, which is a feature designed to let people see what their profile looks like to someone else. The Facebook access tokens that were stolen are digital keys that allow people to stay logged in to Facebook.

It is not clear whether the accounts affected were misused or have had information accessed at this time, and Facebook does not know who executed the attacks.

Facebook says that the vulnerability has been patched at this time, and authorities have been informed. Facebook has reset the access tokens of the nearly 50 million accounts that were affected along with another 40 million accounts that have been subject to a "View As" lookup in the last year.

Customers who have been logged out of their apps will receive a message about what happened once they log back in.

While a security review is conducted, Facebook is turning off the "View As" feature that was used for the hack.

Facebook says that it is "sorry this happened" and that people's privacy and security "is incredibly important." No one needs to change their passwords, according to Facebook, but those concerned can visit the "Security and Login" section in settings to log out of all devices at once.

Today's Facebook hack comes just a day after Facebook was found to be using phone numbers that customers provided for 2-factor authentication for ad targeting purposes and shadow contact building.

I read a lot of people saying they "close your FB accounts" or "there are better alternatives" … yeah sure.

There is this thing that always happens to everyone that is on top of the piramid. People start targeting to the one that is standing out. Not sure why it happens but it always happens. It happens to Apple, it happens Uber, it happens to everyone. There is always a better alaternative. Of course there is.

One time one of you will say "Hey why are you with that girlfriend ??, you know there are better alternatives ???
I know it is an extreeme example, but it has a similar level of nonsense.

They have no idea who did it and the investigation is still early, so I predict:

Next week: looks more like 100 million

Week after that: looks more like 200 million

Week after that: everyone forgets because the great majority of the public simply doesn't care as long as their uncontrolled need for social comparison and voyeurism is satiated.

Followed by FB trading up 10%.

lol trust me, most of my friends don’t do FB either. In fact I truly can’t thikk of anyone in my life outside of co workers that use FB. And they have little to no info on me. Certainly not my phone #, which I know is already out in the open. I can just google my number.
You may not like sharing much (which is a great thing to do) but check out all the personal information about yourself that is on another free site called "familytreenow.com". The information that site provides answers a number of security questions that are required to access your credit report. I was able to look up a friend's address history, then look up his mortgage history (using RedFin), combined with the last four digits of his SSN I accessed his Experion credit report. There is too much information floating out there.

My reports are frozen. I know it won’t stop hackers from peeking at my credit report( not sure how you got the last 4 of his social) but it will stop them for doing damage.

But yeah I agree, no way around it anymore especially after equifax.

Breaches just don’t worry me like they use too.

All these people:
"I never use facebook"
"I deleted it"
and others
...and they use Instagram and Whatsapp...

I am not a fan of Facebook, but it does help. I can see what friends and family are doing, and not have to text or call them (I hate talking on the phone). It also helps with my hobbies and some stuff I would love to do for a living. There is MeWe, I checked it out, but it's useless if none of my friends and family are on it.

~1 billion people are apparently very happy to share their most sensitive of data with Facebook.
I do and I could not care less. Neither do most people. It never ceases to amaze me all the astonishing amount of hate middle-aged people in here have towards Facebook.

My Facebook is so dead anyway. Either that or their messy algorithm filters everything of actual value out. All I ever see is XY liked meme XY nowadays or no posts at all for hours. Graveyard really. No wonder FB is trying to do its best to sabotage Instagram

Facebook is the worst thing ever. It destroyed the society and made people dumb.

I had a browse of Instagram today to "research" a location I want to visit - was just curious what Instagram would have and was like.... "omg" is all I have to say, not in a good way.... (I don't have a facebook account and only a dummy (!) account on Instagram)

Yes there is several good reasons. The many friends, family, followings on Facebook, to name a few. Getting them all moved to another Social Media, and agreeing on which Social Media, nearly impossible.

No need to convince them to get a device that receives phone calls and text messages, right? Social-media isn't the best way to stay in touch or have a conversation with someone anyway.

Interesting that I've never seen you post the same kind of response in a Google bashing thread.

So, thanks for backing up the exact point I was making about Facebook getting a free pass, even though you chose to exclude it from your quote of me.
