  1. Because separate apps consume more battery, more space, etc., chats are simply part of Facebook.
  2. Messaging doesn't need all of these annoying features, especially not video calling.
  3. Because so many people think they can send a video call instead of picking up the phone and calling. Oh and because there is no mute option for it, it even ignores the phone's do not disturb settings.
1. More space I agree, but everything else you said here BS. Facebook app alone is a huge battery hog. I don't want to load the Facebook app with all its news feeds, ads, shared videos and groups just to get to my messages. K?

2. WTF are you on about? Of course it needs video calling! I use it and millions do! Just because you don't use it FFS.

3. Wow. This is more of you hating on video calling in general. Lol.

The Facebook app already uses a ton of phone resources....combining the messaging app into the train wreck of the main FB app would be terrible.

This is not even true. You don't even need a Facebook profile anymore to use Messenger.
Messenger simply says install Facebook if I don't have it installed, so not sure how you get messenger to work without Facebook.

That's my point, messenger uses a ton of resources and so does the Facebook app, so combining them will allow them to use less resources in total. And really both need to be streamlined dramatically. Of course, I have decided to simply move to a third party Facebook app instead, now I can have my newsfeed always in most recent order, have chat in the same app and use no system resources (aside from a little bit of storage space), unless I am actively using the app.

I prefer the simplicity. Why does android have the lite version but not on iOS? I know that certain parts of the world need it, so do we.

I prefer whatapp, and they should unify both apps and also include a pin like BBM. Am I asking too much?

Yeah and while doing that why not just do simple integration of messenger in the Facebook app like EVERYBODY wants?
Isn't the Facebook app bigger and more cluttered than Messenger?
I only use Messenger myself and check Facebook on Safari so I might be wrong.

Why don’t they merge Messanger and WhatsApp? I don’t understand the point of two separate apps.

When people who work at Facebook want to message their friends - which app do they go to, and why?

I have a sneaking suspicion that Facebook’s key metrics are waaaaaay down, y’know. Like, they did not care one jot about how they may or may not have influenced the election, they just carried on regardless, but all of a sudden two initiatives in the past two weeks to reduce clutter? I think people have stopped engaging pretty significantly.

That is one mystery that needs to be solved. But Messenger is more feature-rich than WhatsApp and Messenger supports Apple Watch unlike WhatsApp, so if they ever do merge, it's Messenger that should remain.

No. The Facebook app is even worse, and Messenger consists of most of my interactions with FB. I’d prefer that they remain separate unless the FB app also got heavily rewritten and streamlined.
I can understand that but my biggest gripe is the notifications and interaction with the app and the Facebook app. Double notifications, an internal notification that is a ploy to constantly get me to turn on something for the Messenger app is stupid, and the useless notification that seems like chat/IM when I’m connected with someone are annoying.

It’s rough and not seem less, so if they could address that and declutter it, I’d be happy. Don’t remove functionality but make it logical and intuitive in what one goes to or uses. I do think it’s a bit like someone threw up all their ideas and stuffed them in.

While we're at it, it's not like Apple's Messages is easy on the eye either. The app ribbon in the bottom and all the useless effects need to die.

Oh, goodness! So true. Why does it have to be there and take up real estate on my screen? Why give us the option to hide or display things or have a quick menu to get to lesser used features.

RE: merging the two apps. Don't. The FB app itself is a sh**ty piece of crap that takes 5 seconds to load.

Please add administrative features like confirm new user and delete message from all.

I switched to messenger lite, and while I agree it is faster, it is not recognized as messenger in the facebook app. Now when I tap the messages icon on web or app it takes me to the play store. Other than that it works fairly well.

They both suck. I rather just be able to use the browser on my phone like I do with Facebook.

I would love a native WhatsApp for Apple Watch.

I have ads in messenger!! Immediately deleted the app from my phone.
