But seriously? Do they actually expect to make money from this? I don’t imagine they make any profit on the Oculus headsets, at least not enough to make back what they spent on Oculus. And I’m sure they haven’t recouped their development costs on the video chat devices, even with the whole pandemic. You know, the sooner the current tech bubble pops, the sooner we won’t have to listen to yet another ecommerce, social media, or software firm try peddling yet more ill-conceived physical hardware that will never be a money maker. Bring on the bubble burst, we’ve got too many malinvestments to clear out!

Facebook is about to become one of the worlds leading ai providers and it's precisely because they have so much data on everyone. They will know where you are and what you're doing even if you are not carrying any devices.

On the upside, the social networking business will diminish substantially and regulation will rein in a lot of the "wild west" aspects of todays privacy.

I really want a wearable device but should I go with the company that has a track record of making every effort to protect my privacy and profits from their hardware or should I go with the company that openly admits that they profit from my personal data and makes every effort to track everything I do.

Hmm... tough choice.

i'm sure there are insurance companies that want your biometric data apple isn't willing to sell.

People laughing about this don’t understand that this is ultimately a good thing for competition and thus a good thing for us. Super glad you lot aren’t in charge of any major decisions :)
I think it's actively bad for Facebook to be in possession of the data that comes from a smart watch and use it to target ads to users.

😂. You know you have and/or making so much money (Facebook) that you are investing in a Facebook smart watch. Seriously, do they really think people want that?

They appear to not have made a dent in Amazon. What makes them think they can take on Apple?
For the same reason Amazon thought it could make a phone, I suppose. It’ll probably crash and burn harder than the Kindle Phone.

But really, it’s not like Facebook has an established brand in health or even that they bought out an existing brand like Fitbit. And Messenger is already available as an app on the Apple Watch. And Facebook doesn’t even have a voice assistant, like Amazon does. So I really don’t see what they think they can bring to the table that Apple doesn’t already do better. It doesn’t even look like they’re competing on price. And Facebook Home failed almost before it got off the ground, it’s not obvious that an app that supports Messenger out of the box and WhatsApp (which they could totally add to the Apple Watch for far cheaper than developing new hardware) has any actual consumer demand. Before you put out a smart watch, Facebook, take some time to reflect and seriously ponder 1) what strategic value this has, 2) what the odds of success even are, and 3) is this strategic value enough to push through on the project even if it utterly fails on the marketplace? But seriously, I’m getting sick and tired of all the ridiculous projects these tech firms think they can get away with all because they can raise another round of venture capital. Social media companies and search engines have no business making actual hardware.

This is laughable. FB will not be able to realistically compete with Apple in this area. The phonebook addicts who don't care about being abused by FB may buy one.

I really want FB to pour billions into this project. Just like Microsoft poured billions into their failed imitations of the Apple Retail Stores.... those Microsoft stores have been closed down. Failure. Money sink. Out of business.

Facebook is developing a smart watch that will focus on messaging and health features, according to a new report from The Information. Wearers will be able to send messages with Facebook services like Messenger and WhatsApp, and it will work with a cellular connection without a tethered smartphone.

Health features like options to track workouts with friends or communicate with trainers will be included, and the watch will be able to connect to services provided by health and fitness companies like Peloton. Facebook's upcoming watch is said to run a version of Google's Android software.

Facebook plans to sell the smart watch at close to its production cost, which is also what it does with the Oculus headset. There's no word on what pricing will be, but competing products range in price from $150 to $400+.

It's not likely a smart watch will go over well with those who have concerns about Facebook's data collection. Amazon recently released a "Halo" fitness band that has been derided for its invasiveness. Facebook already makes some consumer hardware products including the aforementioned Oculus and Portal camera and tablet devices.

A Facebook smart watch would need to compete with the Apple Watch, which is one of the best selling wearables on the market. Just this morning, a report suggested that more than 100 million people globally own an Apple Watch. Facebook is also working on its own Ray-Ban branded smart glasses that would compete with rumored products coming from Apple in the next few years.

Facebook is aiming to start selling its smart watch next year, with a second-generation planned for as soon as 2023. The Information says that development is "far along," but there's always still a chance the product could be scrapped.

Gonna be a tough sell considering I deleted the app from my phone.
