Knowing Facebook, this will probably spy on everybody in the room, and since the watches will be out in the wild, this is very, very bad.

I mean, of course it's illegal to just surveil everybody without consent, but I'm not sure Facebook really cares.

The only way a FB product has a chance, is if it's heavily branded something else. Like "The Headnote Watch".

Younger generations don't want it because FB is what their parents use. And the parents generation doesn't want it because FB entire business model is around user data. Not to mention the mishaps and leaks with said data...

How do they seriously think this (and other) FB products stand a chance. They really should try some focus groups...

Cameras on a FB device you carry around all day? DOA

Mark Z is a petulant, tone deaf man-child. Imagine the “war room” he’s set up in FB HQ to try to ‘disrupt’ WWDC

All the better to spy on you my dear!

There will be fools who undoubtedly will buy these, just like those using FB, but given all the good alternatives that exist I can’t imagine this will ever be a market leader.

No way, just thinking about wearing a Facebook device makes me shudder. I will never give my data to this evil company.

Unfortunately I don’t have cash to buy this. Is there anyway I can broadcast my data directly, ”live” to whoever is paying Facebook to purchase my privacy, without spending money on a new watch.

Thanks in Advance.

Facebook has been working on a new smart watch for the last several months, and The Verge today unveiled new details about the device, which will compete with the Apple Watch.

The Facebook smart watch will have a detachable display with two built-in cameras for taking pictures and videos to share on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

A camera on the front of the watch's display will be available for video calls, while a 1080p camera at the back can be used for capturing photos when the watch body is detached from the stainless steel watch frame.

Facebook is planning to work with other companies to create accessories that can be attached to the camera hub portion of the watch, like backpacks. Facebook is hoping that people will use the watch in the same ways that smartphones are used now to circumvent Apple and Google's control over mobile Facebook users.

Prior rumors about the smart watch suggested it will feature a cellular connection that does not require a smartphone, and wearers will be able to send messages with Facebook services like Messenger and WhatsApp. It's also expected to have built-in health tracking features like a heart rate monitor, and it will run a custom version of Android.

There have been rumors that Apple might one day add a camera to the Apple Watch, but it so far has yet to happen. Given Facebook's poor track record when it comes to data collection and privacy, people may be hesitant to use a Facebook-designed smart watch, especially one equipped with multiple cameras and a microphone.

Future iterations of the Facebook smart watch will serve as a key input device for augmented reality glasses that Facebook also has in the works. Facebook is aiming to launch its new smart watch next summer, and it could be priced at around $400.

This is a hard sell even if they gave it away and guaranteed a million likes for your stupid Facebook memes.

If priced @ $400 USD, I think it will Fail miserably !
My uneasy suspicion is that it won’t be close to Apple Watch prices—it’ll be drastically cheaper, and people who don’t understand how Facebook really makes its money will think they’re getting an outrageous deal.

I’d never consider any hardware product from Facebook—their eponymous flagship product is awful enough—but it isn’t that hard for me to imagine such a thing being a hit among less technically savvy folks who can’t believe they can pick up a $45 smartwatch that lets them videochat with their grandkids while they’re walking their dog.
