I don’t care what anyone says...it can’t be GOOD for your eyes.

It's neither good for your eyes, nor bad. Rather, it's inconsequential. Your eyes can handle moderate amounts of energy across part of the EM spectrum (UV to IR). Too much of any wavelength (including visible light) can certainly cause damage. But that's not what we're talking about here - the IR produced by FaceID's TrueDepth projector is minimal.

If you believe IR from FaceID is bad for your eyes, then be consistent: don't glance at a candle, or at a dim incandescent bulb. And whatever you do, never go outside on a sunny day. Stay away from windows, too.

I'm not trying to be a jerk here...I do understand your perspective. You're wary of something you don't understand, and taking a "better safe than sorry" stance. That's not unreasonable. But step back and apply some common sense to the situation. FaceID's projector is nothing compared to the myriad of IR sources we encounter every day, everywhere we go. There's nothing to fear.

Just because a series of experiments is exhaustive and peer reviewed still doesn't mean that science is proven fact. When you need to run a bazillion experiments it shows that you can't totally prove a point factually - so all science is merely hypothesis backed up with evidence to help prove the hypothesis, but that still doesn't make it 100% factual. 99.999% is still not good enough.

Science is flawed!
Sooooo what makes something factual? You are talking in circles. Factually prove to me gravity exists. Don’t experiment by letting go of an object and observe it falling.....as that would be an experiment.

....all I’m saying is more IR going into your eyes isn’t GOOD for them.

First of all, just out of curiosity, how do you know that it isn't good for your eyes? In all truthfulness, I certainly don't know either. But our bodies require lots of things that aren't healthy (salt, fat, etc) in order to survive. You stating something that sounds obvious and logical, doesn't make it so. So you're going to have to first of all provide some evidence to support that statement.

Second, saying more isn't good, doesn't imply more is bad. I drink about 1-2 gallons of water per day. More water, at this point, isn't necessarily good for me. But that doesn't mean it's bad for me (yes, I know there is a point where more can actually kill you, but I'm not talking about going to extremes). You seem to be drawing a conclusion based off an assumption. Or to put it differently, you seem to be making a guess based off of another guess.

Hey guys , heard a lot on web that faceid is harmful and might cause some health issues in long run . Can someOne please let me know what are the disadvantages of face id with respect to health ?
Cheers

Exposing your face to the sunlight is more harmful than FaceID. Lol

How comfortable do you feel about lasers (30,000 "dots") being projected in your face for a few years? Good thing, is they are invisible, if they weren't people would be freaking out.
Another good thing, you won't immediately feel any effects (if any), as they (might) occur gradually over the long.

No one that is going to respond to this thread knows for sure. Personally, I can’t imagine it’s great for your eyes, which is why I just use passcode.

What? It’s an IR projector, not a laser. Is every light source a “laser”?
The TrueDepth system includes a VCSEL, vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser.

The long-term effects are unknown, as no epidemiological studies have been done. Theoretically it's safe when used properly.

All the comments about sunshine containing more IR are totally irrelevant. Sunlight does not project intense near-infrared across your face. If it did, FaceID wouldn't work in sunlight.

Can you post some links to what you saw on the web concerning its harmful effects? Only thing I can find are questions and speculations.

Then, additionally, there's full IR flood light as well.

Interesting. Clearly I have no idea what I’m talking about. I thought it was just an IR flood...but upon reflection, a laser makes more sense - no flood could project individual dots.

I’m going to read up on FaceID and VCSELs. I’ll come back when I’m a little better educated on the subjects. So I sound like less of a moron.
