you shouldn't be touching your phone while driving. how bout you pay attention to the frigging road. if you can't do it with voice control, then don't do it. it's not illegal in most states to touch your phone and in the near future your phone will automatically disable itself when you start the car

There are certainly things you should never do on your phone while driving, but to all the no exceptioners I hope you've never

used your car radio or changed a cd
Adjusted the temperature
looked for the defrost button
Drink or eat while driving
Looked at directions on paper pre navigation days
And I certainly hope you pulled over to search for toll money (pre ez pass)

Whether it is legal or not, some idiots do it regardless and this will potentially add to distraction.

I use my iphone as my car deck with a dsp and dac running a digital coax from apples usb camera kit to the dsp(that sounded like gibberish). My phone is usually always on and also driving for uber here and there the phone is basically pointed at me so Its fine. I need maps to be open all the time.

I think it's brilliant that Apple implemented Do Not Disturb While Driving. Even though it's optional, I think that should be enabled for many, so that way prevents Temptation for those who become distracted on the roadway.

illegal AND stupid to use your phone while driving.

My car doesn't have Bluetooth:(

then you don't talk on the phone until to get where you are going or you find a safe place to stop. your car not hving Bluetooth does not mean you can hold your phone to make a call while driving.

and that includes holding it in your HAND and using the speaker.

I never understand how people this is considered hands-free. Newsflash.... it's in your HAND... it's NOT hands-free!

I think we can all agree that it is not sae to use your phone while driving but I think we can all also agree that a lot of us do it anyway and because of that no face ID isn't exactly safe but maybe thats a good thing. Maybe that means people will put their phones down while driving. If I think about myself personally, I generally grab my phone while driving to change a song. My steering wheel has controls on the back of it but sometimes I find myself having to pick up my phone in order to change playlists. I really wanted a car with Apple Car Play as I'm sure this would've ilimnated my issue but unfortunatley my car didn't come with that option.

I'm sorry officer that I drove over that girl and killed them... blame Apple for their stupid face ID crap...

Yeah their is s BIG REASON most countries make it illegal for you to use your phone whilst driving....

Funny that..

I think it's state by state. In VA it's not illegal to use your phone in general, but it is for phone calls. No one enforces it either way though.

I think the problem here in America is that even though it's illegal everyone still does it. So the OP does make a point in that people will still continue their dumb/illegal behavior and this might make it that much more dangerous.
The reason it's illegal in the US while people still do it is because, at least in CA, the fines are still minimal crap and it's rarely, if ever actually, enforced.

Sadly.

Can't tell you how many times I've been in traffic and some idiot behind me has to slam on their brakes because they're clearly not paying attention, instead their heads are buried downward.

While driving car Face ID or password entry seems less safe than Touch ID. Face ID will distracts you while driving when you want to unlock the phone. Apple could've have integrated Touch ID along with Face ID & password entry. Or at least apple should allow to turn off the swipe up step after face ID is recognized by iphone.

Just curious but if you unlock your phone with touch id or face id, what is the purpose?

Probably to look at the phone.

With that in mind I don't think it makes a difference. It's like what is the least distracting method to allow you to be distracted.

To all those people who say you shouldn't use your phone while driving, I agree 99%, but:

What about navigation?

For those who say "use Siri"...

What if you use Google Maps?

Not every use-case is the same.

Oregon just increased the penalties for even touching your phone while you’re driving. Starting in October, you can’t touch anything electronic while driving, not even when you’re stopped at a light. Which means navigation as well. Serious $$$ or jail time.

I unlock the phone when I plug it into the charger and put it in the cradle. Turn on GPS and go. The phone doesn't lock again until I get out of the car.

Hate to get off topic but is it still doing this with iOS 11?

Before I could start Music or Podcast and iPhone would stay on if on the charger. It doesn’t do this anymore. Very frustrating and adds to the distracted driving.

Does this count for the car radio?

I get how texting while driving is dangerous but what’s the difference in selecting a song on your iPhone and selecting a song on your touch screen car radio?

From what I read it's still allowed to "activate a function" with a single touch. That should cover unlocking and activating Siri with Touch ID (my car actually has a steering wheel button that can activate Siri via Bluetooth, but I usually have my phone configured to not allow Siri while it's locked). Siri is the only way I use my phone in the car.

I never take my phone out of my pocket while driving, and am using the new Do Not Disturb While Driving mode. Works great and no more distraction. Any call comes over the Bluetooth anyway.

Good question others are asking as well. Cant even use hands free phone if you are under 18. I live in a rural area, but i expect the more urban areas are going to catch lots of people, and i expect our govt is going to want to make examples of people. I’m sure the insurance companies are going to be looking at accidents a lot closer.

Now if we could just get the drivers eating a burger while theyre driving we’ll be totally safe lol...

I use Siri and the button on my steering wheel. I push and hold.... the car beep beeps and I say "call hubby" or "play the Hamilton soundtrack".

I don't normally need navigation when I'm driving but if I do I set it up before I leave. I usually have to set up navi when I'm a passenger... we also have navigation integrated in our car so just use the screen on the dash for that....

This seems so silly but I never even thought to do that. I used the Siri feature today and didn't have to touch my phone at all during my commute to work. I think with this feature face ID won't be an issue.

Anyone driving and using their phone gets 100% of the blame. Sorry.

There is NEVER an excuse to fool with your phone while driving. Not to change music tracks, not to get navigation going, not to answer a call from your wife. If you car doesn't support hands-free options, too bad. That's not a valid reason to kill someone. There is NO VALID 1% use case that excuses potentially killing those around you. Stop trying to come up with exceptions. There isn't an app on the App Store that is more valuable than the lives around you. Not one single app.

^This, plus - "Hey Siri, send a text to (insert wife's name), that says I'll be home in 10 minutes." Wait for siri to read it back and reply "Send it" then say "Hey Siri, switch to Waze." All hands free and you don't even need to look at the phone.

That's just it; I never fool with my phone while the car is moving. However, if I'm stopped at a red light, I'd like to be able to check the map to see how much longer my trip will be, or to find a better route.

Some people are taking the "while driving" too far. If I'm sitting at a red light stopped I should be able to quickly check something on the phone if I want to. I'm not endangering anyone.
