i know you love apple and all but, the iphone 4 is not the only way in the universe for your father to see your son over the internet, actually its probably the most expensive way there is 300$ vs 15$ webcam. yeah

Is that all the iPhone 4 is, is a webcam?

Yeah but also think of other apps like Skype which has millions of users. Even if they are also limited to wifi it will still be hugely popular on iPhone 4

I also use Skype. When they update i'll make sure to use it over facetime. Skype is real easy to use

Thank you very much. I wouldn't have truly realized the importance of a feature like this if I didn't have a child myself. Something like this would go a long way for someone like, say, grandparents who couldn't make it to see their grandchild or great-grandchild..

Or better yet, someone in the military serving half way around the world, and getting the chance to literally see everyone in their family while saying hi to them on Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Yet the OP thinks that Facetime would be pointless...

BL.

you're confused, what i think is pointless is adding an inconvenient way to video chat over the internet (iphone 4 only over wifi), when there are very convenient options that have been around for years. I dont think video chat is pointless i just think a phone does it just might be lol.

and also you know that you and your father will both need iphone 4's to use facetime on iphones. period

Can't come up with a reply on topic, so you're resorting to calling me a fanboy.. how quaint.

You assume that my father is rather computer literate. He isn't. Why do you think he had me build his computer for him..?

I had to walk him through installing iTunes. I had to walk him through figuring out playing a movie in his BD-ROM drive. I had to walk him through plugging in the cords. Luckily, he possessed the ability to make fire, so he has the prerequisites to sit down in front of a computer.

At least he's had enough time at the Genius Bar to know how to use his iPhone. I don't need to walk him through buying a webcam as well as installing it, when he already has the ability to do just as much on his phone. He bought it on his own, making it a $0 investment for me to chat with him over it, versus flying to where he is at, buying the hardware, installing it, and flying back. Lessee.. $189 each way, plus your $15 for a webcam. $378 + 15 = $403 without taxes, vs. a $199 iPhone. Yeah..

I say again, just because YOU may think it is pointless, doesn't mean that it is pointless for everyone else.

BL.

Facetime is pointless until the rest of the market comes out with something similar and can connect to any carrier or phone. Almost everyone I know uses a Blackberry or Android device. Me getting the iPhone 4 now would suck because I would only be able to use this great feature with my brother and maybe one other friend.

Why not cripple it even more?

WiFi only √
iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 only √
16GB to 16GB only
32GB to 32GB only
white to white only
black to black only
same area code number to same area code number only

Why not?

insert drivers cd , plug webcam in usb port when program asks. hit next 3 times. your web cam works.

you said orginally that you will have an iphone 4 and he just got a 3gs, you wont be able to facetime anyways. you both have to have iphone 4's, according to apple anyways.

It's rediculous, you HAVE to be calling an iPhone 4 which not many people will have seeing as it's expensive, and you HAVE to be in a wifi hotspot, it's just a gimic.

Yes, which like I said, he just bought his 3GS. In fact, he is only on day 8 of his 30 days. That leaves him 22 days left to return it and get an iPhone 4. That would put him at day 25 when it launches.

And as I said before, you assume that everyone knows how to use a computer. If they did know how to, there wouldn't be a Microsoft or a Dell, or Apple for that matter. They would all just be using Linux or Solaris, and getting paid for knowing them, like I do. But I digress. You obviously know much better than I, so you can go show my father what he needs to do, and I'll just have him return his phone for the iPhone 4.

Interesting that the mother-to-be doing the ultrasound was able to connect to wifi in the doctor's office.

Good one. Imagine that.. a young family sharing the good news of what they are expecting... how 'pointless..'

You can think of it as a beta. Apple is just testing it before sending it off to other phones/platforms. The ones who buy the iPhone at launch will be the best candidates of giving the best feedback of the product.

I will not be communicating with anyone who doesn't have an iPhone 4.

i do understand that aspect of it, but its just not like people cant video chat without an iphone 4, you can get cheap webcams anywhere now.

It's a value added feature.

Imagine there is a young couple with a small child. One member of the couple travels a lot for work with a company issued laptop with no camera. The couple are both about to upgrade their phones. They see that the new iPhone allows them to video talk over wifi with their phones. The person who travels a lot gets to see their child, doesn't have to buy a netbook or another laptop, doesn't have to carry around another device.

These two people are going to spend money on a new phone regardless whether or not it has a camera, so the camera doesn't cost them anything.

For those two people it doesn't matter if they are the only ones using that feature, because I doubt they would want to video talk with everyone.

This feature is not about some new revolutionary way of talking on the phone. Most people will still not want to see a video feed with them. It does, however, create a significant value added feature for use within families and close friends.

If you need me to i can RDP to his PC just give me his ip address, or if he has a router I can guide you on how to port forward his router to allow RDP to work, and i will install his webcam free of charge, :)

Here's my deal: I would love to have it work over 3g but A) It is very new for us Americans as I only know of the Evo and N8 that do video chat over here B) Would crash the network in an instant, and C) Have access to tons of wi-fi hot spots in most desired places to use.

If your in a rural area, chances are you won't have a good 3g signal anyway to have a good video chat session. If your in a major city you can't tell me there aren't enough hot spots to satisfy you to make a call out and about. Hell McDonalds, Whataburger, Best Buy, stripe mall outlets, hotels, schools, etc utilized WI-FI.

No one is complaining about video chat until its released on apple then its a big problem. The network is going to get slammed if it is 3g compatible initially then you would hear whining on how " WAHHHHHH THIS SUCKS. WHY DID THEY RELEASE IT AND ITS NOT WORKING RIGHT."

Give it a few months. That's what new IOS updates are for.

Not only that but who's to say Skype or some other company won't releases a 3g compatible version as they said the videochat is open for exploration for other companies.

Or maybe if your game, jailbreak the phone and try out 3g unrestrictor once it's updated to work on 4.0 and see how well it works.

i agree, so maybe my remark as it being 100% pointless was a tad extreme, but its definitely not what the majority of iphone users will be doing. i just think untill its successfully over 3g, it wont be very useful to the majority of iphone users.

I fall into this category. Stuck with a company-issued laptop, don't want to have to carry a personal laptop plus one for work. if it's available on my iPhone, I'll use it on my iPhone. If this were to have been available 6 months ago, my mother wouldn't have had to wait until she got here to see her grandson. She could have seen him the day he was born. Same with the family of anyone who just had a child, especially if said family members were 1000+ miles away.

But again, I digress, the OP said that it's pointless, and anyone who disagrees with him fails, so it must be pointless..

BL.

also did you notice you were the ONLY person who 100% disagreed with me.

and thats why you fail.

and dont tell me you or your father dont have computers with webcams.

i totally disagree with you, i don't have a webcam and i own a pc, so you can't sling the apple fanboi insult at me just cos you don't have a better reply....

i think this will be quite cool, not gonna use it constantly, but will make good use out of it :) plus i see it extending in the future onto 3G and onto other things like iChat, Skype and the other programs like that out there....

you must remember everyone is entitled to their opinion, which in this case I gave you mine and you gave me yours, i didnt say your were wrong or ignorant, just that you dont need an iphone to do what you want to do, i do agree that since the iphone 4 can do this, along with all the other features of the phone it is a plus. but if family viewing new family members (your son im assuming) is as important as it is, why wait for a video chat phone to start using video chat?

My main hope is face time goes onto the apple tv and into iChat. My bigger hope is still iChat on the iPhone, but I don't know if that'll work out.
