Bad news for the network. More pie to be eaten than we have apples and Cinnamon.

I wish more people understood this. If you think Verizon is going to solve everything think again. They will run into the same network problems ATT has run into. People don't realize how much more data iPhone users use on the whole then anyone else.

Wired did an interested story on ATT/Apple's relationship that goes a little into this...

http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/07/ff_att_fail/all/1

Incidentally I've only tried using Facetime once on a Wifi network but it sure didn't run as smoothly as the ads show on tv. I can't imagine what it will run like on 3G.

I am betting within 2 weeks we see posts from the same people thinking it's "so cool" crying about the data overage charges they incurred because they have no clue how much data streaming video uses.

Those will be some priceless posts as they try to explain to their parents why they just tripled the wireless bill.

that's why we still got UNLIMITED data in europe ;)

When you sign up for an iPhone and 3G service you agree to its terms and conditions. Jail breaking is not illegal and is normally harmless. If you are willing to take the warranty and security risks, who cares? Jailbreak! However, it becomes unethical—just like stealing—if you install 3G bandwidth hogs otherwise prohibited. If you don't like the terms and conditions, don't sign up. Or even better, have the smarts and guts to create your own company and offer unlimited 3G service. Those people who follow the terms and conditions are being cheated by those who install these types of apps because they lower the performance of the 3G network.

how much of a difference do you think is there between watching 5 hrs of youtube a day vs. using facetime for a couple of hrs a day?

the intent here is not "stealing" or breaking the network. if that was the case, a lot of these people could do so even without facetime. the intent is to use technology freely. and at&t will have to catch up to people's usage. if they can't, they will be left behind. people want better technology faster, and if at&t is in their way, then it will be crushed, like it was before the iphone came along.

i personally think it is about time we in the US have networks as fast as our european/asian counterparts.

The only point of jailbreaking is to break your TOS. Otherwise, you wouldn't have to jailbreak to get what you wanted.

Great, are all the jailbreaking whiners out there -- who insist that they deserve every feature the way THEY want it -- going to now be overburdening AT&T's network with this and screwing things up for the rest of us?

Your iPhone is not a do-it-yourself hobbyist PC. Put the soldering iron down.

whatever, its my hot body and I'll do what I want.

My family has two 5-line family plans from AT&T and a total of 8 iphones ALL with unlimited data. :)

On that note, everyone complaining about people like me "abusing" 3G would change their tune if they knew how much we pay a month for the service. Almost 600 bucks! At that price we can't afford not to ride it off the rails.

I was on a roller coaster at California Adventure while FaceTimeing with @branden3112. Should be up on YouTube shortly. Follow @besweeet & @branden3112 for updates.

Jailbreaking the iPhone 3G was the best thing I ever did. It breathed new life into an older phone and as a result, I was able to unlock a US phone for use with any carrier abroad (the process was seamless). I'm currently on O2 and this phone works like a charm. It even has multitasking. Had I not jailbroken this iPhone, it would only be as useful as an iPod touch. Now it has full 3G capabilities and all the other little perks and runs quicker than it did before. I pay less for my data plan, because I provided the phone. For the same number of minutes, texts and data, I pay £25 a month rather than £40, which is what you'd pay if you bought a phone through an 18-month contract. Jailbreaking my phone LITERALLY saved me nearly £200 a year in phone bills, not to mention the £200 I'd have to spend on a new phone.

In addition to jailbreaking, I've completely dismantled it to install a new battery, something Apple would charge an arm and a leg for if I went to them about it. So, while you're entitled to your opinion, I seriously beg to differ. :)

Ah!

LMAO. You are sooo correct! at&t is going to make millions from all jailbreakers going over their 2g in 10 days. Sure it will slow things down for the rest of us for a while, but heck, at&t must be on cloud nine. Get ready for the "Grandfathered Unlimited" to go away. Could be seen as a breach of contract an allow at&t to drop you to the 2g plan. The court ruling does not apply to what carries decide to allow you to do. Think about it for a minute.

$$$$$$$$$ :apple:

Prediction: they're going to spank the "worst" offenders to make an example of them.

Joe Soldier in Iraq calling home to see his new baby and talk to his wife.

How un-American!

But honestly, even Jobs said at the rollout "We've got to work with the carriers a bit to get this going correctly over the cellular network."

More like "get on the Stick AT&T. Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile are waiting in the wings and there's only so long for your exclusivity to continue..."

Yes

i personally think it is about time we in the US have networks as fast as our european/asian counterparts.

I snipped the first part of this posters message but I'll use an example: Japan.

In Japan they have phones that let you watch HD TV and use them as DVR to record a show if you like it. Then you can dock the phone at home later to watch the show on your big screen at home.

They'd never allow it here. The whole VCR thing got thrown out with DVDs and someone would be crying that no-one was being paid for the show and would say "buy the DVD when the season is over."

in Europe FaceTime should not cause any major problems. The 3G network is really fast, at least from what I experienced. Probably because of the higher population density

Great; crush the AT&T data network even further. My data (in NYC) already moves slowly, everyone using all the data for this video chat over 3G will just kill the data rates for the rest of us.

Plus hasten the demise of the grandfathered unlimited data plan.

There is a reason AT&T doesn't allow it on 3G, because their network is not good enough to support the bandwidth. All this does is pull down the network for the rest of us.
Wah. I'm downloading this now just because you said this. Take that. :D

If we pay for unlimited, we should get unlimited. If it pulls down the network, call att and tell them to get more glass in the ground and towers in the air.

Also, Sprint I believe supports OTA video on their handset. If they can do it, ATT should also be able to handle the capacity.

Well Jobs did say that it was only on wifi because of the network. We need 3G speeds like T-Mobile has or just jump on the 4G bandwagon even sooner. However, if every iPhone in America wasn't on AT&T then it wouldn't be such a big deal. Once the phone goes on all the networks we'll see some true advancements. We ALL need to understand just how many iPhone owners there are and how many will be upgrading to the i4 vs the handful of Evo 4G owners out there. That's part of the reason Sprint doesn't mind allowing OTA video calling. Not to mention it's a selling point for their terrible network. Now they gotta figure out how to pay all those delinquent accounts.

Once FaceTime can be used over 3G without jail breaking your phone I will definitely use it on a daily basis. As it is now with only wifi compatibility I haven't used it since the iPhone 4's release day.

I do have to say that the video quality looked pretty good for the guys who did the call.

I signed up on the forum just to shout "I AGREE~! " concerning US networks getting up to speed with the European and Asian counterparts. Shoot, Korea has had video calling via their cellphones for YEARS!!! And we are just getting it in the US THIS YEAR? WTC. I still don't get why the US is behind on all things technologically concerned.

well i just down loaded this app....worked great over 3g i thought it worked better...was not jerky or anything...

man this is my first time jail breaking and this phone rocks now because of it !:D
