It's not ever so slightly. I don't have to think about positioning my phone or my head to get FaceID to work. I just pick up my phone and look at it as I would to interact with it. Sure it would be nice if I didn't have to pick it up and could just leave it sitting on a table and unlock from an angle. It would also be nice if TouchID worked through gloves or with wet fingers. These systems have limitations. For me personally, FaceID beats TouchID. If the table thing is important for you, you can sell it and get the iPhone 8 instead. Perhaps they will combine FaceID and TouchID in a future model, or at least expand the dot projector so that it works at wider angles. I think they will do the latter.

As much as I prefer FaceID to the TouchID on my iPad, they will have to make a couple of advances to FaceID before it will be ready for the iPad: The iPad is meant to be as much of a tabletop device as it is meant to be handheld. It will need to work in landscape as well as portrait orientation, and it will need to work at a bit more of an angle. I often use my iPad on a table at a shallow angle. I don't really do that with my iPhone, because for me an iPhone is a handheld device. The only time my iPhone X is usually sitting on a flat surface, it's on a stand at a steeper angle on my desk. The stand makes it much more visible and easier to interact with when it comes to notifications. It also allows FaceID to work flawlessly. If I see a notification come in out of the corner of my eye, I can just look at my iPhone and it unlocks to display the full text. I get that we don't all use our iPhones the same way, but i'd say the way FaceID currently works is that it assumes you are holding your iPhone in your hand (or that it is at least mounted at a distance and angle that facilitates viewing and unlocking). If tabletop usage is important for you, waiting for a future version of FaceID with a hopefully more forgiving angle requirement might be necessary.
Yeah it’s not gonna matter to me. Cause if they don’t put Touch ID back on the iPhone. And Samsung puts it under the glass I’ll be going to Samsung, I’m tired of having to put my damn code in constantly. I truly hate this fu**ing phone. As for wet finger or gloves. The actual display doesn’t work for those anyway wether it be wet fingers or gloves. So imo that argument is invalid.

I don't understand the large difference in the user experience with FID. Some people have problems others do not. It works great for me. In over three months, I have put in my passcode maybe 10 times and some of them were due to restarts for updates or power cycles. It works with sunglasses on/off, in the dark, in bright light, waking up and still in bed, sitting in a stand on the coffee table, blah, blah, blah. If it was failing anywhere near half of the time I would have exchanged it.
I wish my worked that good. It just doesn’t. I put my passcode in over 20 times a day. Matter a fact right when I came to post this I had to put my passcode in and it wasn’t even tilted the phone was about 10-12 inches from my face.

Sad that people have to choose between FaceID and TouchID. If the iPhone X had both that would be what I would be typing on instead of an iPhone 8 Plus.
Can’t like this comment enough. Especially for $1000 we should get an option.

IMO FID does not work as well as advertised. Plain and simple.
Same with there **** iOS 11 haha

Someone else made an interesting post above mine when they commented that Face ID fails more often then touch ID does, but they prefer the method of Face ID to unlock their iPhone. I think it’s also fair to say that touch ID was a second generation technology, where Face ID is still a first generation technology. Face ID will Eventually mature to the point where it becomes more accurate and reliable when unlocking liking the iPhone on a more consistent basis, but it will never be perfect.

I still have my 5s. Definitely a different Touch ID experience.

You don't own touch-screen compatible gloves? They have made them for years. I walk to work 30 minutes each way, and it's really nice to be able to switch between podcasts, music, and streaming news (or even respond to a text/email) without having to enter my passcode or take off my gloves!

It should work flawlessly at that distance and straight on. Have you taken your phone to an Apple Store? If you have already tried resetting FaceID and starting over, they should replace your iPhone. Why live with a problem like this when you can get it repaired or replaced?

Can't argue with that. Apple could have avoided a lot of strife by adding FaceID rather than replacing TouchID with it. But of course Apple is Apple and once they decide something is obsolete there is no going back with them. They really should replace your iPhone if FaceID isn't working well under normal use for you. Another option is to replace it with an iPhone 8. Either way I hope you get your issue resolved. Your experience isn't normal and should not be accepted as such.

Thanks man. Yeah I got a replacement on the way since it won’t take phone calls now.

And yeah I don’t usually use gloves.

Not working under an angle is a real limitation of this thing.

If the iPhone X is on a table and you want to unlock it and cannot hover over it, you will have to let it fail so you can enter your password to unlock.

The only problem I have is in bright light with my Oakley’s on it tends to not work. Big deal I don’t expect it to always especially with shades on. If it doesn’t work I enter my passcode. I thought I was gonna benlost with all my things I used Touch ID for but the transition was pretty much flawless to the iPhone X I love it

Its Not because the bright light, it’s because the lens are Opaque. Different lenses have a various amounts of infrared filtration. Most let enough Infrared through that through most lenses will work with Face ID. You can also disable attention awareness, where it’s not searching for your eyes.

How is it better if you have to lean over to unlock vs just holding your finger and unlocking @ really any angle?

I like TouchID because it’s one less thing I have to think about on my 8 Plus. I don’t have to think about leaning in, holding it up, angles, etc.

I can unlock from my pocket, desk, in my hand, etc. and it works 99% of the time.

A slight lean is no problem what so ever. Would have to do so to see the screen anyway. You are just looking for something to complain about.

I like FaceID, you don’t, but guess what, Apple has decided on FaceID. You got to learn to cope or move on.

Can’t stand touchID. I mean, you have to reach out your hand and actually touch the phone. What was Apple thinking?

Some people just like to moan when it’s not flawless.

Face ID is here to stay so people need to get used to it or simply get the 8 and never upgrade again.

Apple wont return TouchId, since that would mean they're admiting that FaceID isnt just as good. But let's be honest, unlocking a phone with touching the screen looks really like something from the future.

I agree for the most part. However, complaining about a new feature is also learning to cope with it. Civil, rational complaints is where improvements can be found :)
Still trying to understand why FaceID works flawlessly for some and horribly for others. FaceID can certainly improve and it will :)

I have no doubt it will get better. Guess I am lucky and it works very well for me. If it did not I would go back to the 8+ and hope they get it sorted out with the X+.

You are right about the civil and rational complaints being good to a point, some just go right over the top.

This is what these forums are for.

There’s no evidence to back that up. And also just cause she’s been using it 2-3 years doesn’t mean it’s not faulty. Hell it might unlock with anyone’s fingerprint.

I don't need evidence. I was present. Her phone is not faulty. It doesn't unlock with anyone else's fingerprint that she's tried.

Apple claims 1-in-50,000 people can unlock your phone with their fingerprint. Why is it so hard to believe I'm one in 50,000? Regardless, you're welcome to believe what you want. I have no vested interest in fooling a random person on the internet. You belief isn't required to make the story true.

I don’t think Apple returning to touch ID wouldn’t necessarily mean Face ID isn't good, it would just show lack of confidence in their decision with this new technology moving forward in the future of the iPhone security.

Similarly how others seems to think Apple will bring back the 3.5 mm Jack, which in fact, they are not going to do so. They clearly stated the 3.5 mm Jack for example, his dated technology they no longer want to utilize. Apple rarely if ever, deletes a feature and then reintroduces it later on.

That is hilarious! I thought it was a joke until I followed the link. Looks like you can buy one for less than $20. It even includes an audio jack... everything the iPhone retro-grouch needs! :p

Kinda reminds me of this:

As far as I see I think it’s the bright light. Doesn’t matter if it’s my glasses on or off I’m noticing. Not a big deal to me though

Lol this reminds me of before the X came out and androids had the finger print scanner on the back. Apple fans said how much of a pain it is to have to lift the phone up to unlock. Now you have to do it For the X "it doesn't take much to pick up a phone". Oh how the times have changed lol.

Because of course all Apple product users are of the same mind. Ftr, I owned a Nexus 6P for a while and loved it.

Sane here. Had a nexus 6p and loved the rear FP. I have a HTC U11 now with front FP. I miss the rear FP. Pretty sure I would prefer a in screen FP as long as its accurate.

Incorrect. It Has nothing to do with ‘bright light’. The issue is relative to specific IR coatings on sunglass Lenses.

What it is is that different lenses have a different amount of infrared filtration. Most let enough IR through that through most lenses your eyes are visible to IR even if they’re not visible to the human eye,” says Federighi. “There are some lenses whose coatings block IR.”

This Article explains it clearly:
