I suspect there will be an iOS update at some point that will block the H1-like functionality.

For sure, sooner than later.

I imagine it will take Apple less than an hour to figure out how to detect these fakes, and then a few lines of code will block them from accessing Apples proprietary technology forever.

It would be tough to spot fake bits and pieces.. like the LED on the case of the real ones go off AFTER after you open up the case, while the fakes stay LIT.

'propiertory' as it suggests wouldn't that mean it CAN'T be reproduced? A one of a kind, the crown jewels, that type of thing?

However for those that don't wanna pay the App price tag, all this may not be a worry. Particually, if all you wanna do is listen to music and don't care about the noise cancellation things.

I know so many people in my university that have fake AirPods, I just don’t get it, is it because of the current trend?

Maybe these individuals at your university can’t differentiate between authentic OEM and fakes, probably due to they might be naive and they see a ‘budget price’ for these knock-offs that they can afford, being most college students have little-to-no money. It could be a ‘status symbol’, where they purchase a fake Apple product that looks like an Apple product, but it’s not.

"we do not recommend purchasing these fakes or any fake AirPods Pro models because you're never going to get the feature set, sound quality, and build quality that you get from Apple's own earbuds."

Shouldn't the real reason be that we shouldn't support the knockoff industry?

The part I'm most curious about is the fake (spoofed?) H1 chip. I have two pairs of non-Apple Bluetooth headphones and it would be such a huge convenience if they had some kind of auto-pairing with Apple products. I guess Apple would block it from happening if they can, but I'd be psyched to see H1-like functionality pop up in more 'phones.

but any BT5 headphones, once paired, will automatically reconnect when you take them out of the charger. i have a couple of el-cheapo pairs from amazon (iKanzi TWS-X9 and another) that both do this.

by the by, i have the iTMS 12s; i wanted to find out if airpods would fit my ears without spending a fortune and having to return the real ones. the first pair were defective and the knockies guys made me jump thru a bunch of hoops to get them replaced. they eventually did, and then i gave them to my daughter in college. a couple of months later and the right earbud doesn't work anymore and i have no recourse. $$ flushed down the toilet.

Welllll you didn't really did you. Think you might have mentioned it in one of your few hundred negative Apple posts. Seems you be your day job.

laters.
Lol my history is mostly supporting Apple. I even defend Apple TV +. Try harder.

I bought knockoff AirPods off amazon a few months back. I barely use them and when I do it’s for podcasts so sound quality wasn’t important. I was really surprised when my iPhone “thought” they were the real deal. China is darn good at IP theft.

I once purchased a set of two, advertised as “OEM”, EarPods off of eBay for $10.00 plus free shipping.

No bass and the stereo was reversed. Lol

That "OEM" is hysterical. It's probably a holdover from the Windows market, where "OEM" actually makes sense. Somehow these pirate manufacturers got the idea that "OEM" means "no original packaging", rather than "the version an OEM includes with their system".

Noise cancellation is the genius of AirPods Pro.

I'm still using my $19 i7 airpods. Couldn't be happier. Gives me several hours of play time while at work.

Always amazed at how readily MR gives publicity to illegal IP thieves. Surprised Apple has never asked you to stop highlighting garbage knockoffs.

Apple can ask if they want, but MR has no obligation. MacRumors is indepedant and not affiliated with Apple. I'm guessing these were copied so quickly because the design and form factor was leaked well before they started shipping. If apple is really concerned about IP theft, then Timmy should move production to a country with actual ethical standards..

The writing on this site has gotten so bad. Within two consecutive sentences this article goes from saying that the knockoffs are “identical” to the real thing to saying that they are “similar.” Holy ****. Put me on the payroll; I can do a better job of writing in my sleep.

So because you think AirPods are too expensive it’s OK to rip off Apple’s design?
Where did I say that? It's definitely not okay, but if you price things to where certain people can't afford/justify them, people will purchase cheaper alternatives or copies. I use my $40 "AirPods" once every few months (more frequently in the warmer weather while biking) $200 is a LOT of money to spend on wireless EarPods when used infrequently. I should point out that because I wear hearing aids, any earbud/ in ear headphones require the removal of my hearing aids to use, so I'd rather listen with speakers.

The sound quality of EarPods and AirPods is mediocre. Their primary consumers are those that buy everything apple because it's apple. Timmy cook thanks you for your loyal patronage. Apple's accessories have also been so-so.

But this blatant IPR is an example of the yin and the yang. Overpriced Apple products can't exist without Chinese knock-offs to counter-balance the market. Some hate one and some hate the other but both must exist in order to have equilibrium.

I wouldn't even pay $95 for the genuine ones.

So... you’re saying you’re not the target demographic for the AirPods then, am I right? Assumingely, you’re just probably not apt to appreciating the technology the Pros have offer, which I question why you would even comment anyway if you’re not interested in buying the AirPods. Perhaps you’re the type of individual that be happy with a $10 pair of Bluetooth earbuds from eBay. No snark, just sayin.

For a bit of fun I purchased some fake standard AirPods from wish.com Around $30 AUD with wireless charging case. ( you have to look for second generation copies. The price difference is greater in this case. In Australia Standard AirPods with wireless case is an insane $319 AUD. So comparing these which are 10% of the price I must say I am impressed.

The Upside
Hey Siri
Wireless Charging
Great Battery Life
Sound is very very good. Good bass.
Tap controls work as per Apple
Popup appears on screen as per Apple Airpods
Battery Life on notifications screen as per Apple
I have dropped the case and earpods onto concrete a few times and still function fine.

Missing
Find My functionality. ( If I lose them big deal!)
Ability to customise controls or rename them. Dont get those options.

The downside
Mic is pretty bad. Almost unusable. But sometimes disconnecting and reconnecting to phone makes it better.

I got them for music and for a bit of fun and overall I am amazed. it makes me wonder how much money Apple make on the real things if they can make these which are so close to the original. These were a fraction of the cost of the real things.

I bought some fake AirPods back in February of this year from Wish. Paid like $40 shipped. A month later they showed up. The charging case doesn’t charge them with out being on a wireless charger on plugged in, and the cover on the case was super flimsy (since snapped off) and the battery life isn’t as good as real AirPods. BUT THEY WERE $40.

The case supports wireless charging (works well actually) and the sound is better than the AirPods. They fall out of my ears (just like the real deal) and they are quicker when you tap to pause/play. I think they are called the TWS i10. I’d recommend these over the $199 wireless charging AirPods unless you like the tighter integration of the real product. Also real AirPods come with a 1 year warranty and use genuine batteries.. Can't really speak for safety with these.

I can’t speak for these new knock offs though. I don’t understand why greedy Tim Apple couldn’t have replaced the $159 AirPods with the new AirPods with wireless charging case. $40 for wireless charging? Steve Jobs didn’t increase the price of the iPod nano when Apple added video play back to the 3rd gen in 2007. He didn’t increase the price when they added video recording in 2009. iPhone pricing stayed the same until recently. Jobs would never have offered good, better, best. He just offered the best he could at the affordable well known and liked price points.

$149 should get you AirPods with wireless charging and the non wireless charging should be discontinued. AirPods Pro should be $199. Period.

should ... You have your income but apple has pricing experts. I don’t like their pricing but it works

I got my AirPod Pros for $200 with tax from b&h. I got lucky. They price matched amazon and they sent me a reminder I had rewards that were about to expire for $51 (I didn’t even remember having this). This is a steal for me. I don’t know when they’ll ship but I’ll happily wait.

In looking around for wireless Bluetooth earbuds, I found and ordered 3 different earbuds at various times. One was a single earbud for $15 ( a reduced / sale price, down from $30 - January 2018 ), another was a pair for $20 ( a reduced / sale price, down from $40 - also January 2018 ), and a third was a pair that also cost $15 ( reduced from $45 - August 2019 ).

Reviews for the $15 earbud were all fake with NONE of them from a Verified Purchase.
Reviews for the $20 pair were ALL for other products, but they were Verified Purchases.
The first review was for this pair of earbuds, but the rest were for phone cases, iPad covers and something to use for note taking.

None of these performed as advertised. Either they would not charge, would not stay charged overnight or would not remain paired with my computer or my phone. ALL were returned. ALL the money paid was refunded. What a waste of time. NONE of those items is currently sold.

Considering what they are, I thought the price I was paying was right where it should be. $150-$250 is ridiculously high pricing.
