I don’t understand why greedy Tim Apple couldn’t have replaced the $159 AirPods with the new AirPods with wireless charging case. $40 for wireless charging? Steve Jobs didn’t increase the price of the iPod nano when Apple added video play back to the 3rd gen in 2007. He didn’t increase the price when they added video recording in 2009. iPhone pricing stayed the same until recently. Jobs would never have offered good, better, best. He just offered the best he could at the affordable well known and liked price points.

$149 should get you AirPods with wireless charging and the non wireless charging should be discontinued. AirPods Pro should be $199. Period.

Apple stock price just dipped because of your post.

Interesting review of a knockoff product. But rather than ‘should you buy these’ maybe you should have done how to identify fakes so you don’t get ripped off’. Make it more of a public service announcement than a review, especially as Christmas is coming up.

box differences, so you can identify fakes before even opening them.
silicon tips push on like beats, not like AirPod pro which

This is disgusting. It is morally reprehensible. First off, why is Mac Rumors putting words to this other than outright condemnation? And how could anyone engaging in this forum think this is ok? This is not free trade — it is theft, pure and simple. If you had any scruples, this would be obvious to you.

Apple spends billions of dollar on r&d each year. That cost is built into each product they make. And do you know what else makes it into the cost calculation? The inevitable onslaught of lazy criminals that put out this garbage by stealing intellectual property. Theft is theft. If you think Apple charges too much for something you want, you have the freedom to not purchase it from them.

If you support or celebrate the type of brazen theft such as what is being reported on here, then you should be ashamed of yourself. You can try to justify it all you like, but the fact is that you are part of the problem.

that is why it’s a mistake to judge the popularity of Apple Airpods ( pro or not) by the number of people you see wearing them around you in the street : maybe half of those are fake.
Also , the argument i often read in the comments that Apple shouldn’t make these in colors because it would dilute the instantly recognizable white branding : well , the brand has already been diluted by the fakes and the copies for a long time now. All Android earbuds have been white for years.

If these were made in any other country, they’d be hit with cease and desist letters and then police raids. Being China however, Cook’s overlords will as always turn a blind eye to knockoffs.

Not really. The reality is, that in China, the ruling is always on side of Chinese company. They don't value copyright and so it doesn't make sense for Apple to pay for lawyers if they already now the ruling in advance.

For a bit of fun I purchased some fake standard AirPods from wish.com Around $30 AUD with wireless charging case. ( you have to look for second generation copies. The price difference is greater in this case. In Australia Standard AirPods with wireless case is an insane $319 AUD. So comparing these which are 10% of the price I must say I am impressed.

The Upside
Hey Siri
Wireless Charging
Great Battery Life
Sound is very very good. Good bass.
Tap controls work as per Apple
Popup appears on screen as per Apple Airpods
Battery Life on notifications screen as per Apple
I have dropped the case and earpods onto concrete a few times and still function fine.

Missing
Find My functionality. ( If I lose them big deal!)
Ability to customise controls or rename them. Dont get those options.

The downside
Mic is pretty bad. Almost unusable. But sometimes disconnecting and reconnecting to phone makes it better.

I got them for music and for a bit of fun and overall I am amazed. it makes me wonder how much money Apple make on the real things if they can make these which are so close to the original. These were a fraction of the cost of the real things.

Of course they are fraction of the cost if everything has already been R&D'ed by Apple and they just COPY it.

This is good to know for anyone who might be lured into buying a second-hand set as a Christmas gift without the original packaging.
would you really buy second-handed earbuds ??? I definitely NOT.

these will go along quite nicely with your rolox.
Yep. And these will pair very well with your ChiPhone too 😂

You get what you pay for, folks.
I think these doesn't even worth $90 ...

...you're never going to get the feature set, sound quality, and build quality that you get from Apple's own earbuds.

Whilst I agree with the article in principal (and certainly wouldn't spend this type of money on a knock-off), I don't agree with this generalisation. With the Apple's premium pricing, I think there's a real potential for "high-end" knock-offs that are actually just as good as an Apple product, but cheaper (especially where items are reverse-engineered). Yes, knock-offs generally are tat (or at least poorer quality), but that doesn't mean they have to be.

If it connects like the real thing and Hey Siri works, I think that mean they've successfully reverse-engineered or cloned the H1 chip.
This is why nothing should be Made in China anymore.

And also for a more fair price compared to the real deal. I'm interested now.
I don't like paying too much for anything either, but give Apple credit where it's due. It's full of their R&D so why shouldn't they profit from that? The knock-off is theft.

[/QUOTEThey are probably made in the same factory as the real ones. This is China after all.

I‘be had many of my designs knocked off by Korean and Chinese copycats over the years. Some of us tend to take this sort of thing more personally than others.

(as for the article itself, you don’t really think this site is actually pro Apple in any way, do you really? Just look at their syncophantic suck up work with respect to the “ifixit” parasites.’)

Always amazed at how readily MR gives publicity to illegal IP thieves. Surprised Apple has never asked you to stop highlighting garbage knockoffs.

I disagree, this highlights that many of the AirPods and AirPod Pros on eBay are fake and allows customers to make informed decisions. I’ve been trying to buy AirPods for my kids recently and have suspected that many of the devices at a good price were fake. This has confirmed it :)

I wonder if these will connect automatically without iOS 13 as the real ones require. Not all of us can or will upgrade.
TWS must feel honored to have a real review from MR.
I need the ability to hear and can't use a sealed AirPod so I'll keep using the TWS i7 models I get for $19.

I bought some fake AirPods back in February of this year from Wish. Paid like $40 shipped. A month later they showed up. The charging case doesn’t charge them with out being on a wireless charger on plugged in, and the cover on the case was super flimsy (since snapped off) and the battery life isn’t as good as real AirPods. BUT THEY WERE $40.

The case supports wireless charging (works well actually) and the sound is better than the AirPods. They fall out of my ears (just like the real deal) and they are quicker when you tap to pause/play. I think they are called the TWS i10. I’d recommend these over the $199 wireless charging AirPods unless you like the tighter integration of the real product. Also real AirPods come with a 1 year warranty and use genuine batteries.. Can't really speak for safety with these.

I can’t speak for these new knock offs though. I don’t understand why greedy Tim Apple couldn’t have replaced the $159 AirPods with the new AirPods with wireless charging case. $40 for wireless charging? AirPods should be some made up price you made up in your head because some cheap knock offs that don't work properly are only $40? lol. Okaaaaay.

Apparently some people think if a product costs more than they think it is worth or than they are willing to spend then it’s OK for somebody else to rip it off and price it cheaper. It’s disgusting. What’s more disgusting is only China seems to get away with this. If this was some product from the United States Apple would be suing them so fast it would make your head spin. But China? Crickets.
And also for a more fair price compared to the real deal. I'm interested now.
What’s a fair price? Just some number you made up in your head.

The sound quality of EarPods and AirPods is mediocre. Their primary consumers are those that buy everything apple because it's apple. Timmy cook thanks you for your loyal patronage. Apple's accessories have also been so-so.

But this blatant IPR is an example of the yin and the yang. Overpriced Apple products can't exist without Chinese knock-offs to counter-balance the market. Some hate one and some hate the other but both must exist in order to have equilibrium.
Orrrrrr..... Airpods work incredibly well and that's why people buy them...

They first managed to a while ago with knockoff AirPods.

I had a pair for a while until I got curious, and, well…

WAuK6co.gif
woohoo! i haven't seen an AngerDanger gif in awhile. Nice zippo case :)

"There’s a sucker born every minute.” Phineas T. Barnum may not have actually said that but it’s still true. Put these right up there with fake Rolex’s, fake Gucci, fake Coach, etc. Stupid, low income level people trying to look affluent. Fake keeping up with the Jones actaully.

Its really surprising to hear these items are for sale as it’s blatant copyright and patent infringement. They are not for sale on Amazon, but a quick Google search shows them listed on eBay and surprising to see Google NOT enforcing zero tolerance for fraud. Those listings will get black listed as soon as Apple’s legal team gets in the game.

even the Apple packaging is copied - i know because I’m a victim..traded my Beats Pro wireless for “Gen 2 w/wireless case” and got dupped. The functionality is so similar to my first AirPods I didn’t notice until connections kept dropping and I couldn’t use “find my” app feature like my wife could with her gen 1. Sound quality is crap compared to hers

Plenty of American companies do the same thing. For example Amazon - probably the biggest rip-off manufacturer in the world. If you have a successful product, Amazon will copy it, make it cheaper, and sell it under one of their dozen in-house brands.
