This is the MacMini I would buy...

Throughout the 80's this was the way to go... Before CRT's and LCD's.
Now, take your MacMini anywhere there is a TV. Battery powered or plugged in.

I don't care for laptops cause their screens are either too small or bad quality for photo editing or just too expensive...
This would be a great MacMiniBook

Lol so a screenless macbook?

I guess in your own arrogance you failed to realise that the current Mac Mini has 4 USB ports and a FireWire 400 port...

They may not all run on independent buses, but never-the-less, 4 USB ports..

OK, you all got me. So I didn't do ALL of my research. Sorry. I will give you that a potentially refreshed Mini will have/keep 4 ports. It will lose firewire though, I guarantee it. If the MB lost it, it thoroughly shows that Apple views FW as something that the average consumer "doesn't need".

Ummm, you do realize the existing Mac mini already has 4 USB ports, right? FW is not being phased out, it was not included on the Macbook because there was no physical space to put the connector on the new unibody. The larger dimensions of the MacBook Pro allowed them to include the single FW800 port, but they had to do away with the FW400.

Dude, the existing MB is the same size as the new Unibody one (1.08 x 12.78 x 8.92 inches old vs. 0.95 x 12.78 x 8.94 inches new). The DisplayPort connector is smaller than the Mini-DVI one, so they actually GAINED space. They lost the FW because Apple either thinks they know what we want or, more likely, so they had a little more to differentiate the MB from the MBP other than a video card (not to mention it will force AV folks to spend $2000 for a Mac laptop they can use rather than ~$1000.

Replacing the DVI/VGA port with displayport means there is even more space in the back than on the outgoing model. The Mac mini has enough space for FW on the back and FW800 is backward compatible, so no need for the FW400 port.

Something tells me that they will use that space to make the body smaller, not to give you more connectivity.

in all fairness, i see your point, but i do believe that firewire is being "partially" phased out... at least until usb 3.0 is released (next year, i believe? someone correct me if i'm wrong), at which point, i don't see why it wouldn't be phased out completely. firewire sync'ing and charging was included in all ipods up until recently... now the iphone, ipod touch, ipod classic and nano only charge/sync via usb. and with the introduction of the macbook air, there was no firewire... new macbook, no firewire (their most popular notebook, btw). it wouldn't surprise me if, in another year, firewire was phased out completely in favor of USB 3.0, which has speeds that put 2.0 and FW to shame.

Check out Firewire 1600/3200. It is backwards compatible with existing cables, etc. Granted, USB 3.0 has a higher theoretical max speed, so we'll see how all that goes...

Tons of space in there right?

For those who believe in fairy tales and nursery rhymes...

And all of Steve's horses
And all of Steve's men
Couldn't design an enclosure
That Firewire could fit in

No my post was to him saying that somehow they gained space inside the enclosure. But he didnt factor in changes in the battery and speakers amongst other things.

FW woulda been in their had steve wanted it in.

You guys crack me up with all these wish list etc. on what your dream Mini will be. The new Mini will be the very same thing it has always been nothing more nothing less. A few new updated laptop parts jammed into a small shinny aluminum box. There will be a small speed bump and a slight case design but at the end of the day it will still be a laptop in a little slim box.

So in reality you can purchase the new Mac Mini tonight at your local Apple store its just called the Mac Book instead. All this hype for a little box that will have a Mac Book inside just shaped a little different.

That's right. Everybody has a big HD LCD at home. Why not take your computer along and plug it in for games, photos and DVD playback?

I attempted that with an old PC keyboard and a laptop motherboard I had lying around, got so close to the end, it worked right up untill I put the final casing on, snapped a tiny corner of the board, didn't work after that, such a shame, ran OSX86 like a champ, well, a one legged champ, it was only a 2ghz Athlon

But yeah, the idea is nice, it'll never get implemented, it's no longer a marketable category sadly.

Define everybody. Cause I sure as hell dont.

Well I have a 37" LCD and a 32" LCD/DVD Combo.

U can get refurbished 37" HD LCD's for $400 WITH built in-DVD's at ecost.com
Who wants to shell out $900 for a "small" Apple 24" Display that only hooks up to a Mac? Or in any other case, any other Samsung or Viewsonic Displays that don't go over 27" for thousands...

Give me a screenless MacBook with an HDMI Out for $600 and I'll buy it.

But I do, that means, 50% of MacRumors users have big (22" is big right?) LCD TVs.

I have two Samsung 244T's ($499 each) hooked up to my MacPro. One of them in Portrait Mode. Apple's $899 display doesn't even swivel...

I rather have a $700 42" LCD... Bigger IS better. :D

What I was getting at is that no where near "everybody" actually does have a large lcd screen. Sure lots of people on here do , because we are computer geeks, but your average joe tends to only have whatever came with his computer.

Guess you aren't familiar with resolutions then.

Go check the resolution of the 24" Cinema Display (and also take note of the PPI).

Using a tele as a monitor would be horrific. Okay, 1080p tele's would go up to 1920x1080 which isn't all that bad, but for the size of the thing, the PPI is awful and to do anything productive would be horrible on your eyes.

Yes, people use what came with their computers cause Monitors are expensive compared to TV's.

Check this out. A Westinghouse 47" 1080p (better than 1080i) LCD for $749!!!

Apple's 24" is $899. Wouldn't u rather have an extra 23" and save $150?? Besides this is a real TV... Whoever comes up with this concept first is gonna sell millions... :p

LOL!!!! no. just no. :p

This thread is really starting to wander, I really hope that the new MM will have a optional Superdrive, as in, detachable, I'm sure they can work it so it looks nice with or without it, offer it optional though so the people that don't want it, can just un-tick it when purchasing, not everybody needs yet another drive that they're rarely going to use...
