Haha - lying and using your reputation to spread a rumor and then passing it off as a prank is pretty unethical... your credibility is shot, but life moves on....

But it it keeps Apple's legal team busy for a few days while they try to find out who the ... this guy is and how he is getting his information, then it was a job well done.

Congrats, Kelly! I salute you!

You took exactly what everyone was guessing about on these forums, spun it into an unrecognizable mess and then [pow], instant box-office smash hit!

unethical

Hi KTM...

You know the power of the internet, you used it for self-purpose, then apologized about your behavior. You did what you did because you could, but you never asked yourself if you should have done this. Every one lost, except your ego I suppose. Your apologies notwithstanding, you should perhaps know and agree that you exhibited unethical behavior.

You are the perfect quintessential example of why folks like myself pay Apple for good software.

Regards...

MS.

Any talk about an Apple SDK before public release would result in getting privs taken away and a nice spot on the blacklist.

Whether this was a lie, or not, it wouldn't have mattered - Tiny-Code wouldn't have been creating crap after disclosing having taken ownership of the SDK - they would have broken their NDA by doing so, and hence garnered the wrath of Apple.

Done.

See if we ever trust you again with hacking our iPhones, *******.

Well, basically, each time you use a piece of code from someone you don't know, you're either implicitly trusting them, or you're just being stupid not to even consider the possibility that it would be malware.

Anyway, I found the whole story quite enlightening. The sad thing is, the ability to propagate such a rumor is definitely not limited to Apple's SDK, it can happen with just about any piece of news.

Because I felt like feeding the fire at that point?
Remember, I didn't know this was happening until Saturday night, I was away all friday night and saturday, by then my site was EVERYWHERE.

After some advice from Dessa, a friend of mine, I decided to feed the flame a bit.
However it was now time to douse it before I got burned.

HA! Oh man. That was pretty good. I've hoaxed a forum or two in my time, but none that have wound up in Fortune magazine. Jeez! Well, that and some of the responses in this thread just go to show how foolish we can be, taking a few words on an internet *rumors* site so seriously. Hats off Kelly, FSP

Pointless is right....

Call me "boring" or whatever. But really, I think I still have a sense of humor, yet I never find these "pranks" very entertaining.

Yes, it's probably good that some major media publications "bit" on this without any further fact-checking and published it. I agree that they need to be reminded that they're SUPPOSED to be offering a higher quality of journalism than random web pages on the Internet do.

Nonetheless, every time somebody makes up fake information, they just add more garbage to the Internet, in all the places people are trying to glean tidbits of REAL information. I'm talking about all the people who find it amusing, drawing up fake "new product photos" in Photoshop too.

This "clutter" only serves to make web sites like this one less worthwhile to visit. (Why bother, if you lose confidence in anything being said as having any real value?) And on the flip-side, I just don't get the "satisfaction" someone gets from constructing a LIE and watching people read about it/pass it on? I mean, what did you THINK would happen? It plays out the same way every time it's done -- and people have been doing the "false rumor/false photo" thing since the Internet began. It's sure not ORIGINAL anymore.

you must be desperate for attention to pull something like this, pretty pointless.

Gotta agree with you kingtj. There are funny internet pranks but this isn't one of them. It's not offensive, really, either - it's just disappointing. Not disappointing in that the story wasn't true, but rather disappointing that someone would think that sort of thing is entertaining.

Kelly crushed his own credibility far more than the credibility of those "news" sources he ended up pranking. They engage in poor fact-checking and poor journalism, but we already knew that to a large extent. What we didn't know was how much of a tool Kelly could be. Now we know.

Come on guys... he didn't know that his little page was going to be taken so seriously. I don't think he planned on spreading this rumor to a ton of websites... he was probably just bored and posted something stupid and everyone took it so seriously.

I remember when I was younger... I posted a little tid-bit on my webpage that nobody looked at about my cousin's ex-girlfriend saying that I made out with her. While both her and I knew it was a long running inside joke and it never happened... but, posting it on my site... her ex-boyfriend saw it (my cousin) and then he refused to believe that I made it up. Just goes to show that it's not easy to joke around on the internet no matter how many people visit your site.

No, its totally fine to have what ever on your website ... but AFTER that, he came on here and lied and said it was true...

Actually, if he ever applies for college, applies for a job, etc., his lies would probably bite him in the behind.

After he reads this, I would not be surprised if he says "oh, the lie was a lie, there was really no lie, etc."

People can make up whatever they want on the internet. It's called freedom of speech. You don't have to believe everything you read. Who cares if he lied... whatever... DEAL WITH IT. It's HIS own internet space and HE can write anything that HE wants. Ever heard the expression "Don't believe everything you read"? That's the way the internet works... it's not a big deal.

It just goes to show that this is still a RUMOR site. It's not MacReleaseFacts.com is it?

Oh what tangled webs we weave
When first we practice to deceive.
But when we've practiced quite a while,
How vastly we improve our style.

In the words of J.R. Pope, I think you need some practice.

Kelly just took a one-hit KO to his reputation.

I highly doubt anyone else is going to beleive anything he says about the iPhone from here on out. Kelly just acted like the boyu who cried "WOLF!!" In that sense I highl doubt he will ever get his full credibility back.

As for college or work lieing, well it will bite him back if does it on a normal routine. Lies at work are the third reason why people get fired in the world, don't beleive me? look it up. In college a lie may be plagarism or cheating on a test, either way a lie is a lie.

To wrap this Kelly is sure thing to be used a memme for lieing in the iPhone community now.

I know that, I, for one, will never trust anything this guy has to say. He's definitely lost the trust of thousands of people. I will remember KellyTM for a really long time... :)

Even if he decides to keep on developing independently he will have to hide his identity from the people using his software. After all, who's really gonna trust this guy now?

I've been following for a little while here, and I had to register for this. Seriously -- is this guy going to go into a job interview saying "Hey, nice to meet you, I'm the guy who lied about the iPhone firmware release. Remember that?" Who's ever going to know that it's the same guy? So, do you not trust anyone named Kelly from now on? WTF.

Hell, I know I've been to plenty of websites where I registered with a fake name. I could easily get a friend of mine to register a domain name for me in their name(haven't checked the WHOIS on tiny-code, but I'm sure someone has). How do you know it's not the guy (or girl) sitting at the cube/desk/whatever next to you?

"His" picture is on his profile ...

With all due respect, does that mean that zap2 is really either Hugh Laurie or Captain Planet? Besides -- and maybe it's just my browser/firewall settings at work -- I didn't see a picture. And how hard is it to find a random picture on the internet and post it as your own?

thats what the "--" was for ... and he has taken it down since then ...
