I got excited when they first started talking about this feature. But it turns out that it doesn't do what I hoped.

Me and my partner live at the same address. Both have individual iTunes accounts, different debit cards.

She buys some music, I buy some music. I want us to both be able to share the music. Why would we buy the same album from iTunes twice?

Yeah the only way to do this is to either share an iTunes apple ID or set up both or your purchases to use the same credit/debit cards.

Are you only using the one user account on the MacBook? If you are, why not have your own account on the MacBook. You may have one and only computer, but can have more than one login for it ;). Anyway, in answer to your quip exiting yes it will.

Yeah, we have just one account on the Macbook that we both use. And yeah, I *could* add my own, but I'm still not sure what I'd be gaining here. The main issue, if I'm understanding this correctly, is that we sync all of our devices (two iphones and one family ipad) to the very same itunes library on the one-and-only home computer. To *us* as a family this makes sense. WE have a photo album. WE have ownership of some music, movies, and apps.

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do come Fall.

I've been holding off creating emails for the kids. Will I need to do that now for this? Also can I create a new @icloud.com email without another primary email?

Anybody know if the family share thing will work OK with this scenario?: My wife and I each have iPhones and we have ONE home computer - a macbook. That macbook has itunes and iphoto and that iphoto contains our entire family photo album from both phones. When we plug in our phones to sync, we upload our photos into iphoto. And the itunes install is tied to the itunes account of my wife. My phone is also tied to that account and I sync and unsync music, apps, etc using that. I also have (on my phone) her icloud account set up so we can both find-my-iphone each other and alert or nuke phones if needed.

So... is there going to be ANY point to me finally getting my own personal icloud and/or itunes ids on my iphone? Remember, I sync to the itunes on OUR computer. Our one-and-only computer.

We have a very similar set-up...though we use "my" iTunes account since i started mine first. She uses her iCloud email, I use mine but we share the iTunes account for purchases.

I have $$ from gift cards in my account and don't have a link CC, so guessing that might stop us.

ONE benefit I do see is if you have children and want to get them started with their "own" apps, music, movies, books they can take with them in the future. and guessing you'd also be able to keep them since they were linked to both accounts at one time. NOT too sure on all that, but my guess.

As it stands, I don't see my wife and I splitting and wanting separate iTunes accounts.

iCloud.com
login to your iCloud account
Goto Mail>Preferences>Accounts
Select Create New Alias
Enter Alias Label ChildName
Enter New _________ @ iCloud.com Alias email account under your own primary iCloud account.

****
Note:
Apple will not allow you to convert an Alias account into a Primary account, so if, in the future, you want your child to have a Primary account called ChildName @ icloud.com, then you might want to create an Alias account with a different name such as ######## @ icloud.com or something else of your choice that will let your children use an alias email a little more "anonymously/securely" with the outside world, yet allow you to identify them easily.

I'm sure there are other ideas and theories available from others here that would help you as well.
****

Then just select the Create Alias Email button to finish the process.

Does anyone know if hidden Purchases (e.g. Apps, etc.) show up for other members in the Family?

I don't really know, but part of me wants to believe/assume "No," because those hidden purchases are hidden from you on all your devices.

The problem for some in the future will be if all the family purchases use/share the same credit card, in which case the Primary account holder in the family will still know which purchases are being made with that shared credit card.

I guess the logistics of how families share credit cards and content will be more significant than if "hidden purchases" suddenly become "unhidden" when other content is shared.

On a completely separate, semi-related, social/philosophical note:
This "family sharing" model (even with cellular carriers and other business) seems a bit ironic to me now, when only 50% of Americans are actually part of any traditional married family, and younger generations are avoiding marriage altogether. In another 20-30 years, this "family sharing" model will primarily include random groups of friends and their random assortment of children, and they will call that "their family" for the length of time they remain friends. This has already been happening a bit for at least 10 years now, probably longer. Crazy! :(

’Family' is a fluid concept now. They even made a sitcom about it.

Has anyone set this up to see if it works yet? I've tried but I cannot find where to see the shared content. I have 2 devices that I set up. Both say they are sharing purchases, but in iTunes under purchased I do not see the shared content.

----------

Also, does anyone know if family sharing can also include your iCloud Photo Library?

Shared apps will not show up until developers allow it.

Wish sony would recognize a "family"

At least apple has the ability to share purchases recognizing people have multiple users under one roof.

Sony does not, and it is really a PITA when you are required to own your own copy on a VITA/PS4 etc on downloadable content.

Your issue was already solved by Apple years ago with the Home Sharing feature in iTunes.

Really? As I understand it, home sharing again only works with 1 Apple ID. so if we were using 2 iOS devices with 2 itunes accounts, under the same house hold. There is no way to share that music?
