The part from Wembley was brilliant, and the May guitar section was excellent. Then it all went wrong.

You don't piss on the Mona Lisa. You don't let silly women like her cover a Queen song.

Damn, right, she murdered that song. There are some great British male rock singers who could have done a better job than her. Heck, even Robbie Williams would have been a better fit than Jessie J.

Jessie J did what the IRA could never do.

Killed Queen.

It was fantastic. And I feel genuinely sorry for anybody that can't see that. And I feel nothing but pity for those that talked endlessly about how the Olympics would be a disaster, only for it to be one of the best games in recent hsitory - as lauded by a great number of unbiased individuals and groups.

As for the Rio preview being better? It was great, particularly considering they were performing at the London Olympics, rather than their own (obviously). But that's what it was; a preview. It had none of the gravitas, the impact of our ceremonies (and neither could it). I can't wait to see the show they put on in 2016! :)

Great Olympics, and two great ceremonies.

Couldn't agree more, massive waste of taxpayers money.

Lighten up and stop being so cynical. You'll probably live longer and maybe for once have some fun in your life. That's what the Olympics are all about.

It seems like more and more people these days are just miserable, negative *******s who think everything is about them and everything has to be exactly perfect, and if it's not, they feel the need to consistently bash it and try to tear it down. Remember when most people actually cared about each other?

Your post is great, sums up the entire idea of the Olympics perfectly, and shows that at least some people still get it. London did an amazing job with these games. There were so many great story lines from the actual competitions, and the spectacle of the whole thing was great too. You think people could just lighten up, enjoy the show, and have some fun instead of nitpicking the little things.

I didn't really care for it myself. I'd rather a more rigid and formal affair where they bring up all the medalists, announce their names, what country they represent, the event they got a medal in, what the medal was and if they broke a world or Olympic record. Then play the national anthems of each country that got a gold in order of fewest to most.

Also how come with all the money the spent they could not find a few military personnel that can march in step when carrying a flag? They did a better job in the closing ceremony than the opening.

It was an entertaining enough show but had nothing to do with sports or the Olympics. It was just interpretive clap trap honoring British entertainment and fashion.

Not counting the cost for security, the Olympics actually make money from the sponsorships. The infrastructure investment (the venues, transit, etc) which do cost the taxpayer money also stay in London and will be benefitting Londoners for generations to come. Admittedly the huge blackhole for money is the security costs. On the bright side, all of the money spent on salaries will be ploughed back into the economy through income taxes spending.

It'd be nice if the Olympics company (the name escapes me) funded the whole thing. And if BBC News had non-sports news for more than 10 minutes.

The IOC - the International Olympic Committee - and it's not technically a company. In this case it was the UK (or London?) Committee that reaps the sponsorships and pays the bills. See my comment above re: the cost of running the Olympics.

If you new anything about the financial situation in the UK then you would know that we cannot afford this massive wast of money.
Its not about being cynical it about spending money on things that matter like employment, education and the welfare of our returning troops.
Personally I don't care who runs the fastest or jumps the furthest but i do care about the appalling state of my country.
And please stop calling people *******s because they don't subscribe to your point of view.

personally, i loved the olympics, the opening ceremony, all of it... except i thought that the closing was a bit muddled. what was going on there?

there was no cohesive message to be gleaned, and ultimately it seemed like one big mishmash of brit pop culture.. which, don't get me wrong, i am an anglophile myself, but for the closing ceremony i thought it came off as a bit strange, within the context of what we had just been privy to for the previous fortnight.

in some ways i guess i'm not sure what would have been good as closing ceremony material.

overall though, amazing olympics... fantastic job GB.. absolutely loved every minute of it.

Seriously?

One or two goodies... but lots of **** from people who can't sing in tune. A pretty pitiful lineup.

Opening ceremony was night-and-day better.

Jessie J was the worst... an embarrassment to modern British pop. I'd listen to 2ne1, 4minute etc. in preference any day!

I have now watched it 3 times. Once in 3D as I'm working on a project with 3D Olympic footage, once on my ipad using the new BBC Iplayer retina app and once in 2D on my Bravia. I was underwhelmed and I just wish that if the BBc had to use 3D, they had it right.

They had all the right equipment at many venues, but it seems that nobody even gave them a short course in how to shoot properly in 3D. The games however were a great success for London IMO. The 3D stuff is going to be tough to work on, as the top of ALL the footage is blurred, and watching with glasses on is a certain headache....Might be able to chop the top (where the venue seating is) but that's about it. Shame, but it is new technology. They did get the sound right though....Dolby PL2, and it's really atmospheric at the events.

I loved the opening ceremony... did not really appreciate the closing ceremony. Except for the giant octopus, that should make an appearance at every Olympic ceremony.

Needless to say I didn't bother to open my TV.

I had forgotten about that ceremony, and was reminded by a Facebook post stating (in disgust) that the band One Direction was performing. Needless to say I didn't bother to open my TV.

I can't stand One Direction. Naff, one-dimensional music for teenage girls. I played Angry Birds while they were on. Hey, am I the only person to notice their name sounds like Wand Erection when you say it? :D Open your TV?! Is your laptop your TV??? I'm a little bit confused...

I guess the musical tastes aren't going to suit all, but I had no real issues with it to be honest. I thought a few others could've been there instead, but overall it was fine.

Odd bit was why George Michael chose to sing a new song which no one had heard of before.

See post above yours. I just instinctively translated a French expression, which makes a lot of sense in French but close to none in English.

I can't believe One Direction got (quite a long) spot towards the start of the ceremony. Absolute talentless idiots put together by the puppet master Simon Cowell. They even mimed to the song they had no input in writing! Disgrace to British music.

I honestly don't like them at all either. I'm American, but the depressing thing is that so many teenaged people call that 'sophisticated' just because it's not the same thing as the 'gansta rap' out there today that glorifies prostitution and gang violence.

You can do practically anything with a British accent, and it sounds sophisticated. We have a good friend, formerly of the UK, and a fantastic artist. Well educated, and well read. But who is found of the f-word . However it sounds totally sophisticated coming out of her mouth - especially as she is usually raking some art movement over the coals at the time. Lets face it, you can read the tube timetable with a British accent and it sounds sophisticated.

Of course this only makes sense 'cause I'm Canadian, and used to the Canadian and American accents.
