Knife-point? You're probably not getting my phone.

Was thinking about this the other day, you shouldn't be able to turn off the phone while it is locked or else stuff like this happens & you can't track it

android phones (at least those running JB and higher) won't allow to be turned off from the lockscreen if the phone is password protected.

it just plain silly considering all the features apple works on to prevent phone theft can be neutralised by turning the phone off.

Well, like mentioned before, it's just a phone. Thieves only gain 300 dollars off of it if even thanks to find my iPhone.

If a thief ever holds me up with a knife, though, le KRAV MAGA!!!!

You can remove the batteries of android phones easily.
Crock of crap. I work on these and androids that have easily removable batteries are far and in between.

It's moot anyway as anyone can put it in airplane mode from the lock screen. For that feature to be useful, Apple would need to require Airplane Mode to be fingerprint-activated from the lock screen.

I would've handed the phone over immediately. Seriously not worth it.
Anyway, about the passcode to turn the phone off.

They could've just forced you to tell them the code.

Well, considering that uses Control Center and that can easily be disabled from being available on the lock screen through an actual provided option by anyone that wishes to do what with their phone, it's certainly not really moot. (That said, I'm not sure why Apple hasn't made the airplane mode toggle ask for a passcode/password/fingerprint, like Siri does when you ask to activate airplane mode from the lock screen.)

Yes, but not many are aware of that and some may not want to sacrifice being able to access Control Center just to defeat Airplane Mode. What Apple really needs to do, as you suggest, is make Airplane Mode fp-activated even from the lock screen.

True dat. I have control center disabled from lock screen and all email and imessage notifications. Also locks in one minute. Paranoid? Maybe. Someone takes my iphone all they get is the hardware, yes it can be turned off. My digital life is safe. Phone cant be wiped or hacked. At times touch id gets disabled also.

Got my iPhone 5S mugged last night. Three guys came up to me with a knife, no questions asked: I just gave them the phone... Luckily, my insurance covers the whole situation and I should get a replacement in a week or so.

Still, this situation has gotten me thinking. The guys who stole from me immediately turned the phone off (according to the police, it wasn't their first time). I was therefore totally unable to locate it (I did however put it in lost mode and erased all my personal info). With iOS7 and the iPhone 5S adding a great amount of security, it would be great if we could set up a password to switch the phone off...

Oh well...

:(
Well it is good your safe...hopefully insurance will cover u!!!

I'm stating to wonder if locking it immediately would be worth the extra inconvenience for the added security.

Hmm. Every day I think about not ever selling an Apple product on Craigslist. A knife really? I would run. They are not getting my phone.

Um... If someone was threatening me with a knife for my iPhone.... The iPhone would have to go. I like my life better than my iPhone, sorry.

Then you'll have no problem admitting the US has a much higher crime rate per capita than all nations with strict gun control.

Actually, no. Do your research before regurgitating propaganda.

Also, if this were the US the guy would have been robbed at gun point, not at knife point. I'd choose the knife. But thanks for making all Americans look stupid.

No, not all Americans look stupid, whether they are for gun control or not; that would be discriminatory bordering on racist to say the least.

Sweeping statements will never help your point………what was your point again, except insulting the person who believes in a different gun ownership/control policy?

Glad to hear you are safe as it seems you handled the situation as it should have been. Insurance will cover your loses and you will live to see another day. Wise decision on your part.

Agreed. It is much better to lose a phone than your life.

GOD BLESS THE USA!! Knife, meet Glock.
A bit flamboyant, but sure.

Yep, really. I conceal and carry a firearm. The situation in question, with no guarantee mind you, plays much differently when you draw. Trust me.

I'm no John Rambo, and carrying a pistol doesn't instill any type of false security, or even make me feel safe. I feel prepared. So that one time I stepped off the bus and the guy behind me demanded "everything you've got!", I was. I calmly turned and when he saw what I offered, he was no longer interested. God bless the second amendment. Its about my right to personal protection.
[Guns = Violence] is a weak mentality. In my opinion at least.

OP: Glad you're safe. think of it like this, your new phone, just got newer. :)

Glad to see that crime doesn't exist in places and countries that have taken away citizens right to carry...oh, wait.

GOD BLESS THE USA!! Knife, meet Glock.

Sure, engaging in violence (possibly a gun fight) and threatening each other's lives in public is a so much safer and better solution  .

hmmm... didn't work on my Nexus 5. I tried both the PIN and the Password lock, both allowed me to turn off the phone (while locked) from the lock screen. What's the secret?

I think this is a good solution if it works. It's the reason I turned off Control Center from the lock screen on my iPhone (so one can't turn on Airplane Mode while locked)... but they can simply power off from that screen
