Do you have an external drive you could clone everything to (using Carbon Copy Cloner)?

If you did that, when you get your replacement machine you can just use the migration assistant to transfer the external drive over to your new computer. Depending on the data, you'd be back up and running in no time comparative to installing all the apps and transferring your from scratch.

Well. I would insist on retaining the damaged laptop until the new one arrived. Then I could use the migration tool to transfer. Is it 100% fine doing this with the apps? I've had probs in the past with licenses not being activate properly etc. Adobe are asses with this!

Yes Adobe generally sucks on things like this. That said, I have not experienced a problem. I think the problems come when you have a setup that went from Jaguar to Panther to Tiger.

I guess as long as it won't come back to haunt me in months from now then I'll do a migration. I will uninstall CS3 from my existing machine so it won't get migrated then reinstall it on the new laptop post the transfer. Would that work?

I was looking on the Apple discussion board last night, though I didn't see a mention of this particular problem,..... hmm *wonders why .

Oh it's there now!

There's a few posts there. Is been posting there and there are a few other folks who also have the same issue.

yes.. actually it is. for this many people to be having hardware faults i do find it hard to believe. its a massive pain in the ass, and I now have to wait another 2 weeks for my CTO antiglare if i have to re order another machine.

Now I'm starting to question why Apple delayed the 17" unibody's shipping 1-2 weeks...

One other reason that I'm afraid to switch to the 17" unibody is 2-3 weeks after I get one I already know that the inquirer will release a new article, The 17" unibody mbp's Nvidia 9600m gt uses bad substrates as well!

we can question all we like...

...but there is no doubt in my mind we are all being suckered into paying for form over function and mass beta testing for Apple.
I say this but will still buy their products!

Must have missed it, mind you last night I'd not slept for about 34 hours.

I thought they might of been deleting posts again, that's all

they have been deleting some posts..there are a few vociferous comments about the 9600 on the 17" that disappeared..

I've just been onto Apple support..
1st suggestion.. full erase and install to try and get the drivers reinstalled.
I've done this on Saturday.. so not a chance I will be doing that again.

I've left it with the dude there and he has promised me a call back tomorrow about the same time. I'll let you know.. He seems to think there could be a firmware issue and not a hardware one.. we shall see!

You see - I bought mine on the notion that the 17" MBP wouldn't really be a Rev A product as such. Seeing that the 15" and 17" share a lot of the same specs and graphic cards - and there aren't major reports of the 15" suffering.

Will be very annoyed if I get a bad apple. So to speak...

Yup.. me too!

I went to bed around 11ish last night and put my computer into the Arabesque screensaver. I woke up this morning, come over to the computer around 9:30ish. The computer was a little warm to the touch, took it out of screensaver, and no problems (phew!)

I hope that you get your problems worked out Rick!

Mine was on all night.. but i don't think the screensaver thing puts enough stress on the GPU. I spent a while looking for something to stress the GPU but cant find any app that will let me do it.

It trully is a sad day when you have to worry about this crap with a NEW $3000 laptop. Shame on Apple. I have went through my won battle, where I came out a winner. I wish I could battle them for every person on here, getting this crap for their hard earned money. Fight the good fight boys, let Apple know they can't do this crap and get away with it. "well we'll send you a new one to replace it," That's good what ells are you going to send for my time waisted?! :D Oh and lord have mercy of the new one is messed up!

I don't think it stresses it enough either, and I also have been looking for something that can stress test a GPU on a mac. The only thing I can think of is to install windows on my mac just to run something. Will Windows 2000 Professional install in bootcamp? It's the only copy I have of windows. The app someone here recommended looks good. Here's the post from someone else here...

Try ati tool...I know its an nvidia chip, but it works. It will do a stress test on the gpu and scan for artifacts. Run it until the gpu temp peaks say 80-90 celsius steady then watch it closely for say 5-10 mins (overall test for about 20mins) it will report when it sees issues. http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/ . Good Luck.

>>>>>>Just thought I'd update again. Even after David's solution of the SMC reset temporarily working, I decided to be more proactive about things and call Applecare.

When I got an Applecare tech on the line I repeated pretty much everything in the forum. He said he had not heard of the issue but asked me to wait on the line while he researched it. Surprisingly, when he came back on the line he informed me that Apple was aware of the issue and that the purchase date (Dec. 01 2008) fell in line with, "the faulty video cards (9600 series) that Nvidia initially released". He advised me to have my machine sent in for a logic board replacement. I let him know that others in the forum have done this and the issue remains. He agreed that this was unacceptable and that if my machine comes back and still has the issue I need to ask for a "Tier 4 replacement".

I hope this helps anybody. I haven't sent in my machine yet but I'll let you know if it comes back fixed or otherwise. If others have sent in their machines for a logic board replacement with no results I would ask for a brand new machine.

Thanks for the info!

I'm still waiting for my ubMBP17" and praying for the best.

I had the problem (replacement on the way) and would consistently make the lines occur by using Handbrake to rip a dvd (while converting to Apple TV format), and then just let it sit on my glass table. It'd pretty much max out the CPU the whole time (generating a delightful amount of heat), and the lines would eventually come and get worse over time. The same stress on the 9400M didn't result in any lines what so ever.

Yup.. seems that this is in line with what we're all finding...
So... is this the forums putting all the problems in one place, so it looks like there's a bigger problem than it is, or have Apple been using dud GFX chips.

I really dont understand how there can be THIS many people with the problem.

Hey, thank you! We all need a reliable way to test our replacements (one on the way as well) and it looks like you found it. I appreciate the help!

However, if anyone else knows of a quicker, more convenient way we can test our machines please speak up. I'm sure there are many who are questioning their machines and would like a way to test them out within the 14 day window. The thing about this problem is that it is progressive. You may not see it right away, and it will most likely creep up on you in the coming months. Not everyone will see a blatant problem immediately. They may not see it at all until a few months down the line. This is why by stress testing your GPU now, you will know what the future has in store for you.

Stress testing your GPU should be one of the first things you do right out of the box. Before you spend an endless amount of time migrating and setting up apps.

Alright, I'm plugged in and just started a project in Handbrake right now to the Apple TV format. It says about 1h37m to go until complete.
