Sorry to the Tim Burton fans out there, but it's been a long time since he was considered either indie or cult. All of that stops when the name of the director is printed in larger font than the actual movie title on posters.

On that note... would The Fifth Element be considered a cult movie? It makes my list of top 3 movies... right up there with Princess Bride and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Ah yes, that's right... Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory... not Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Perhaps now my hatred of Tim Burton is overly showing.

Throw Darren Aronofsky in there as well. Good on ya 'compile' for reminding me.

Indie is fairly static, but "cult" is a very dynamic genre. If people start really following it, then it's cult.

Star Wars (IV) was a cult movie for a few weeks in the summer of 1977. I remember it well. To many people, it still has a cult following.

I never knew anyone outside of Boston ever saw Boondock Saints.

Good flick, genuinely surprised anyone else has seen it.

Are you serious? That's been one of my favorite movies since I first saw it in high school! And I think just about all my friends from back home (in and around Oakland, CA) have seen it and love it also.

Also love UHF, The Gods Must Be Crazy (although I haven't seen it in years... need to get on top of that).. and Cube! I can't believe no one's mentioned that one...

Oh, Banlieue 13 (District B13 in the US)... would that be considered cult? I dunno, but I love it.

As much as my girlfriend loves Tim Burton, you can say whatever you want about him...but Danny Elfman. Great guy, love him.

Gods Must Be Crazy. I forgot about that - love that film. :D

I second that. GMBC is my absolute most favoritest movie ever. My wife has imposed a 10 minute quoting rule on me (i.e. I can only quote 10 minutes of the movie whenever we watch it).

The sequel wasn't as good because it actually had a budget, but it was still amusing.

And I refuse to acknowledge the existence of any GMBC sequel with a number higher than 2 and/or Chinese vampires.

Oooh. Danny Elfman. I love his older stuff - like the Simpsons theme and the theme to the short-lived CBS series The Flash.

He also did the music to another one of my favorite movies...Midnight Run. Not sure if it would quite count as 'cult,' but it is underappreciated.

Since all the cool kids are doing it. ;)

I'm not sure if anyone else in the world ever saw this, but I LOVED it for some dark and unknown reason.
John Cryer, Jennifer Tilly, Ad Asner

Here's one of mine:

and another:
requiem-for-a-dream_l.jpg

Requiem for a dream. I forgot about this one. It is amazing how many people have not seen this movie let alone have heard of it (even considering the mom was up for an academy award for best supporting actor in this film). Great movie. I love how it doesn't have a "lets kiss and everything will be ok" ending. Love this movie.

Boondock saints, love this movie. Turned my whole family on this one and each of them got a dvd copy for christmas a couple years ago. They all love the movie too!

bottle rocket
rushmore
dazed and confused
an american movie
they live
superstar-the karen carpenter story
harold and maude

the man who fell to earth

two lane blacktop

Two classic movies.............

I love the scene in KFM.... Don't try this at home kids.. I can't say the word but the scene it self is freaking funny. The look on the dudes faces after our super hero says the word.... priceless.. For those who have seen the movie you will know what I am talking about.

Only saw this recently, loved it :D

+
Pulp Fiction
Blues Brothers
The Big Lebowski
Eurotrip
...others I'm sure...

when I think of eurotrip I THINK ABSINTH !!! the little green fairy...
HAve you taste it ? did you see any green fairys or duarfts or naked man paint in green ???

Definitely the KS movies. I own everything he's ever directed or produced (and commercialized).

Best in Show
Eternal Sunshine (Jim Carrey's best performance)

And I'm tempted to put a bunch of '80's movies in here. I'm just 21 so most of my friends and peers haven't really seen all that many of the '80's movies, but I swear by Stand By Me, Bad News Bears, Princess Bride, etc. Not sure if these are cult movies now but they're definitely some of my favorites.

I forgot about Requiem for a Dream. Never have a respected and hated a movie so much at the same time.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was brilliant as well.

And how could I have forgotten David Lynch films!

These are good movies but are far away from being cult, let alone indie.

What is with all the scattered snotty remarks about this? These can be pretty broad terms. Pardon me all over the place for listing movie(s) that I liked which may not fit some perceived strict criteria for that definition. I thought, "hey, these don't seem very mainstrain/ordinary but are well-liked and definitely classic in my mind" so I listed them. Should I avoid listing any others I think about in case I get it wrong?

I have. It's vile stuff but I had no hallucinations and I definitely didn't make out with my sister, dude. :D

Absinthe is vile. I'm also on the no hallucinations front, but just in case I'm glad I lack a sister or brother for that matter.

I too forgot Eternal Sunshine, good movie.

I think this thread deserves a new title:

101 reasons why I don't like mainstream movies
