Since I started med school, I've tried to cut out fast food excepting for the rare treat with my wife (who is partial occasionally to Arby's). The reason she likes Arby's so much is because of this coupon survey thing where you call a number on the receipt, take a survey, and get a free sandwich. We've gotten about 20 so far, and never paid a dime past the first one.
About 9 years ago, I stopped eating red meat at restaurants, and have enjoyed my fast food experience a lot more.
For me, the order is as follows:
Chipotle (or Panchero's for those in Iowa)
Berto's (family sandwich place in Downers Grove). So, so, so good!
Pizza joints (nearly any will do, insofar as they actually try)
Chick Fil-A, but only the chicken sandwiches.
Wendy's (spicy chicken, it does me good for some reason)
Whenever I can, I try to find a locally owned equivalent of a fast food joint and frequent those places instead. Berto's, for instance, beats any Subway or Quizno's hands down every time. And cheaper. And better for me.
Cooking for myself has been amazing. I save a ton of money, I get to choose my ingredients, and I get a sense of pride for learning a new skill. Last week I made pulled pork sandwiches. Got 9 pounds of pork, 12 rolls, and some BBQ sauce for 13 bucks, and I got 12 meals out of it (well, 7 for me and 5 for the wife). Way cheaper.
