My answer to this is: If my daughter was being held captive, and you asked me if money should be spent on unlocking a phone, I would punch you as hard as I can.

You are showing a most disgusting and un-Christian attitude.

And anyway, I'd rather they spend a million dollars on police officers searching for her than giving the money to hackers to unlock a phone that doesn't have the slightest chance of containing any useful information.

So if they found the phone of the abductor, and of course there may be a clue on the phone to her location to save her, and they could send the phone to a lab to be investigated whilst they carried on all other leads to find her.

You would step in and say NO, leave that phone alone. Carry on doing what you are doing, but don't try and see if there is anything on the abductors phone.

Sorry, I don't believe you. I think you would want any and every avenue explored at all costs to try and save your daughter.

The head of the FBI only makes $183,000?

I mean WTF. No wonder the FBI is so clueless. Any one with great talent will refuse to work for so little money to take such a dangerous and burdensome job.

The head of the FBI should be raking in a couple million at least. That way they can get some talent in the building at least.

Welcome to the Federal Government GS salary grades. Keep in mind that many Federal positions have a signification bonus system on top of the base salary. Same goes for the military where you get bonus pay above base pay considering your performance and achievements in your job or career. Look at the spiffs that Medal of Honor recipients receive. Some of that stuff you cannot buy at all.

They probably paid a lot more than that in legal fees to threaten Apple.
I'd love to see what Apple's internal and external attorney fees were for this whole FBI fiasco. I'm sure they reached out to Constitutional Law specialists. Doubt if that will be itemized publicly.

For those that think this is a waste of money, consider these facts:
  • This hack that they purchased can be used for more phones.
  • There was indeed the potential for there to be valuable information on the phone (even Apple doesn't deny that)
  • There was no way to determine if there was valuable information before hacking into the phone
  • If the FBI had decided to continue the legal battle, the costs would have been astronomically higher both in terms of reputation and money. Remember Apple has a lot of cash at their disposal that they would have used to fight this with.
Bottom line is no, Apple shouldn't have ever been ordered by the courts to write code to bypass the security features, as it would have cost Apple a fair chunk of change and I doubt the government would have paid them to do it. On the other hand, the people who did do the work to find to holes did get paid for doing so. Now, if these people are smart they will sell the exploit to Apple directly, that way Apple knows how to patch it and they make even more money. Then they can work on finding a new security hole.

Why did they have to mention Director Comey's salary?

He didn't have to pay this out of his personal bank account, right?

More BS unconfirmed coverup. Apple let them in with the 9.3 iPad2 (and 5c) flaw. At first they thought it was a good PR lurk for the Israelis, but that was too public and traceable, so then it was mysterious foreign hackers, much harder to confirm. And now this story, all unconfirmed. What gets said at 'conferences' is BS anyway. I had a nurse telling me, with a straight face, that she was told at a conference that the the 911 terrorists had biological weapons strapped to the underside of the wings of the planes.

Anyone who listens to a word Comey 'the emotion stirred up (by the FBI, by the way) was unhelpful' says, will get what they deserve.

As for people who are BORED with the FBI story - take a good look at yourselves, this is the fight of the century - once gone, you will have no privacy EVER AGAIN! And there's one tough gay guy standing up for the whole world on this. Give him some support.

for that money the FBI could have put in some systems to run brute force. Maybe not full-blown super computer but one of the now more common cluster of system options this would cover. Thinking sexy racks of blades off top of my head. All networked up. headless...just ssh into them as needed. usually not needed...it be the cluster master once everything fired up you would need to access.

Now if they are planning more cracking (and more bills like this)...now we can get them a real nice supercomputer to make even the NSA jelly. As, well, this is what the NSA does to crack things.

Sting is the cost to show nothing. Which us tin foilers theorized. Its what burn phone are for. Keeps your side ventures off of radars. Company phone...those bills are looked over by many people.

I know unfaithful husbands who got this system down cold. GF comms on the burn phone that the wife doesn't know about or will ever see a bill for. Turn it off/silence and hide it and there is no random phone calls from the side woman at bad times. Cheap burn phone cheaper than divorce basically.

WHAT!? He is ONLY making $183,000 a year as the head....... of the FBI. Damn  ....... My father has a job for him where he will earn twice as much.... forward your resume please, LOL. All of that wasted $$$ down the drain for finding zero.

Except when the IRS wants their taxes paid :)
[doublepost=1461276541][/doublepost]

Not at the level of decision and operation making you need to do. While I don't think it qualifies to earn a million, I would say 320-500k would get better talent.
Talent? What good would that do in a government job?

The other bureaucrats will just harass you, till you leave.

Didn't you just witness the decision-making prowess of these doorknobs?

If you want to pay more for government workers, you're on your own.

Your father would hire this guy? Better check with him first.

They mentioned his salary because that was the reference point he himself used when saying how much it cost to unlock the phone "7 years and 3 months", he didn't give an actual figure, just an equivalent in time. In order to work out what the number was, you have to multiply by his salary so it seems pretty reasonable that the article would state his salary and then do the multiplication.

Thank you. I feel like after reading these comments you are the only smart one. Also I don't think that this was just the directors decision to spend these funds. I'm sure the White House told him to get the phone unlocked by any means possible. If it did contain any information about another attack people would be praising his right now.

Your failure to be aware of the amount of "paper" the aforementioned entrepreneurs possess... reveals more about you than you're aware of. And that's OK, there's millions of you that coexist worry free
Internet searches would suggest less than 2 billion USD. What, do you think they make more? I don't really care, to be honest. I never knew about these people until my friends in college told me about them and haven't listened to any of their songs.

Politicians have always had the same calculus before them - when is spending justified, when is it not? People want the government to spend on things they care about, they want the government to not spend on things they don't care about. Winning candidates tend to be those who best gauge the public's toleration/desires in that regard.

In the case of public safety, the public tends to be generous - defense/military spending, police and fire protection, etc. When we're scared, we want protection and are willing to pay. When large, noisy factions are demanding answers, spending money to provide those answers is politic. It's only when those efforts seem to go to gross excess that people start complaining about the cost. Is $1.5 million "gross excess?" I'm not sure - I don't have the political skills to judge.
Regardless, it's game over. The tech blogs made it sound like the people had "won" in the Apple vs FBI case, while in reality it's a lose lose situation. The exact same cronies are still in office, and the American people like it. People seems to forget that the people that set this up are the people they voted for. All that is wrong with the USA are the fault of the voters. People should be accountable on their decisions.

And just watch. We already have the patriot act extended pretty much forever. Laws will be slipped in while the American public are more concerned about political correctness.

Again, excellent work people.

Yeah, and the irony of people supporting Chinese companies as the better companies.

Regardless, it's game over. It was already over. Patriot act, Snowden, it's all out in the open, and voters keep voting for the same cronies in office. It's quite fascinating actually.

Fraud, waste, and abuse...
... approved by the voters.

Gotcha.

But I still don't understand why he referenced it in that way in the first place. Seems strange.

We never hear the Director of Homeland Security comparing how many years of his salary it takes to secure the US Border.

Or how many years of the Secretary of Defense's salary the US spends on keeping hundreds of thousands of troops overseas.

It's just a weird unit of measurement. :)

So basically the FBI spent more to unlock this iPhone than they'll pay him for the next 7 years.

But again... I'm not seeing the reason he explained it in that way.

Clearly he knows we can do math... so he didn't do a very good job of shielding the public from knowing the actual amount of money the FBI spent.

He didn't come out and say the FBI spent $1.3 million... but we figured it out anyway.

{Notsureifserious.gif} <-- insert here.

I hate to tell you this, but the FBI Director doesn't hang out with Raymond Reddington. Nor does he supervise Brian's NZT dose. Believe it or not, he doesn't even visit the Jeffersonian.

*Bonus points for anyone who can get 2 of those 3 references. If you get all 3, put down the remote and go outside.:D
You can pry my Harmony Ultimate from my cold, dead hands! The Blacklist is awesome (she's dead, but she'll get better!), Limitless is great in its quirkiness but it doesn't look good for renewal, and Bones, well, it hasn't been as strong since the kid became the killer's apprentice, then fell even more with the loss of Sweets--hence it has only one more season

wow has the FBI gone ape **** crazy? That's ****ing ridiculous. Someone should get fired for that kind of misuse.

What a waste of my tax dollars...

Instead of using the Tax money to nuke this goat ****ers and get over with it they had to waste the money a cell phone that probably just had his dick pics.
[doublepost=1461299116][/doublepost]Remember guys it was a hacker from Turkey who unlocked the phone a foolproof America still working with rapist and murderer aka terrorists. Sad they put trust in a country who has done multiple Genocides over the centuries and America keeps saying no such thing happened.
