I am astonished by the level of criticism that has been leveled in this thread. Why do people have so much problem with the fact that others have different opinions? If you think the G5 is ugly, that's fine. That doesn't mean that I have to agree with you. And just because I like the look of the G5 doesn't mean that I'm kissing Apple's ***.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

You're right. But I think the two people that said so were only trolls, so we should forget about them and go on with this thread.

Not so much trolling as trying to increase post counts, IMO. Someone saying this thread is pointless is almost as bad as those people who respond to Help Questions with "I have no idea". THEN WHY POST!?! You clicked on the link! It's even worse when they post the same complaint a couple of times in the same discussion.

Of course, technically, I just did that too.

At least I'm on topic.

Wait, no I'm not... uh, G5 good. Ugly maybe. Maybe not. Good pictures. Anyone else worried about the dust factor?

Hmmm - i emailed apple about the dust and allthey did was tell me good ways to get rid of the dust in their own opinion. I mean - please - who, with any brains vacuums their mac? even more so if it is a metal case.

As for the looks - i think it will look nice. Like a REAL computer and should stop many of the comments that come from BBOs* about our computers only having good looks and no guts.

I like it.

That's something that has occurred to me. But I doubt it will be much more of a factor than with most computers. Now, the best anti-dust designed computer I've ever seen was a box that an aquaintance of mine built. He was never happy with any design that he found, for dust reasons. He actually reversed the fans in his box so they were blowing into the case, not out, and he installed a thin filter over the fan entrance. He told me that he had to change the filter about once a month, but it only took thirty seconds. And with the fans blowing into the case, there was positive case pressure, so no dust would get in anywhere else.

Now, what I'd really like to see is a consumer machine (or pro-sumer machine) that is designed from day-one to be closed-system liquid cooled. Then they could really crank up the GHz!

[mod. edit - No need to quote the images again.]

I retract my statement on a previous post that I have grown to like the G5's look. I'm definitely waiting to see it in person before I pass a final judgement, but from these pictures, it sure looks terrible.

It looks like a metal canister, and not one I'd be happy to put on my desk. And I just realized another thing:

Even if it does look good out of the box, imagine how susceptible it's going to be to fingerprinting. If you don't polish it everyday like a good Mac user, it's going to look really bad within a few days. And it may not be temporary either, because I'm pretty sure the oils from your hands won't be very kind to the case either.

It is. I had a look at the G5 at the LinuxTag (http://www.linuxtag.org/2003/de/index.html)here in germany.
Slick machine and blazing fast. They run 10 or 15 quicktime trailers at the same time, and you could play quake in fullscreen on a 23' :)

Amazing piece of hardware and so easy to change the hdd.
And the front and back look good.
The interior you can see on the photo is not visible if you look at it.

Wait, they're displaying these places? I didn't think Apple was distributing their prototypes for show. I wish they'd put them in Apple Stores--at least high-traffic ones.

But I suppose that Techie-events like these would be the ideal place to show off the G5.

Kind of steals the thunder from Jos and Apple Expo, though. But I guess Jobs never really liked IDG and its "expos." :D

That's right, because what they are showing there are the NEW Powerbook G5s, with PWT(tm)* displays that keep your screen that provide a 3-dimensional surface through which images can be seen.

PWT(tm) is the registered trademark for Rubbermaid Plastic Wrapping Technology. Patents pending.

but wait, aren't innovation and technological advance pretty much the same thing...at least when you're talking about the TECHNOLOGICAL industry? ;)
