Re: looks

• for: obeygiant
Hey, if i ever get enough posts to get an icon, it is going to be the andre Muslim star... Obeygiant knows what i speak of.

Anyways, you cant buy the bluetooth modual seperate... sadly. May happen later.

It is all to obvious that NEW KEYBOARDS & MOUSE are going to come with the G5.
:D

And does ANYONE think the G5 is a good looking machine, especially when on the desktop next to the monitor and temp keyboard and mouse?
Man that is butt ugly.
180 degrees from apple's usual sense of style. This will not make the Museum of modern art collection.
Mine will be under the desk.

It is. I had a look at the G5 at the LinuxTag (http://www.linuxtag.org/2003/de/index.html)here in germany.
Slick machine and blazing fast. They run 10 or 15 quicktime trailers at the same time, and you could play quake in fullscreen on a 23' :)

Amazing piece of hardware and so easy to change the hdd.
And the front and back look good.
The interior you can see on the photo is not visible if you look at it.

As bluetooth isnt standard on the powermac, there is no way that they will come with a new wireless mouse/keys, unless its a bto option when you purchase the bt module..

Well they showed me today that you can easily remove the fans and get to the places where the bluetooth and the modem is.
There where also some rumors that a dsl interface may be available (third party).

I find it interesting they are testing with all 4 units hooked up at once. If it is an emissions test, does it only fail on spikes or is there an additive aspect?

Most people do not have 2 CPU's I am guessing (geeks of course have more).

Maybe it is a cost saving measure to handle all testing in a single "event".

Arn, after you refund my full subscription I will buy about a million shares of Worldcom and become a Billionaire someday.

Thanks for the tireless work and even if by some people's standards this is old news, it is new to casual browswers to your site and that is good enough for me.

Actually, you could see into the front of some of the machines at WWDC, mainly because the ceiling lights were hitting the case at exactly the right angle. The ones I noticed weren't quite this "transparent," but I could clearly see the front processor fans turning (very s-l-o-w-l-y).

However, those display machines were in a dark room with sparse lighting. The G5 machines in the developer's lab were in a brightly lit room, and you really couldn't see into those (looked like the Apple site's pictures).

Hmmmm

So many people are so harsh on the design of this computer that I am compelled to retort. Apple TOTALLY REDESIGNED the entire desktop from the ground up.
Before this computer apples were distinguished from PCs on the outside, but the innards of a desktop have always for the most part been the same (save the cube, of course) Until now.
This design may not catch, It may not make it to the next revision (the cube). But it is a complete departure from the status quo of desktop interior design.
Other that the fact that it is roughly the same shape as most desktops.
So it turned out that they needed mesh on the front and back to get some cooling on, well I see it as function meeting a form of necessity and attraction.
And that’s not saying anything about the specs. I think the G4 had some flare but I like this design more and more, if not only for it’s interior layout.
I personally revel in this accomplishment for apple, and hope that some real world tests prove this thing to be the monster that we all hope it will be.
Even if I don’t totally agree with the way it looks on the outside, yet.;)

I looked into this and asked several people at apple. They are not currently planning on selling the part to the public for installation outside of the factory. You may be able to get it at some-point from an authorized repair shop, but you shouldn't plan on it ever being available. If you need it internal, get a custom built g5.

You guys I have a really good idea! Apple should put the antenna inside the computer! Oh how clever I am.

The all-aluminum, hole-punctuated case would practically eliminate any chance of a signal getting through.

I wish they could have come up with some integrated design that blended with the case (like the 12/17" PB antennas).

I think you're referring to the thin plastic film on the display of the powerbook. All powerbooks (at least all powerbooks i've ever gotten) come with a sheet of plastic stuck to the screen to prevent scratches and damage during shipping.

I've got a 12" bro and no plastic came on my screen.

Yeah, I really don't care for the see-through front panel.

i may be giving up a great moneymaking idea, but a neon kit custom fit for the inside of the new pmac wouldn't be bad idea

I think it will look better in person.

Besides, I see beauty in function. What a wonderful idea, to have unidirectional free-flowing ventilation! Close your eyes and breath deeply, as you imagine the cooling energy pervading the computer case.

You guys are overreacting to the "transparency" of these beasts. Just think about how it would look under normal lighting, not the glare of a flash. Look at a speaker with a metal grille/dust cover. Can you see inside, see the speaker very well under normal conditions? No. But if you get a flashlight and shine it through the holes at about eye level, then can you see the speaker cone? Of course. It's exactly the same with the camera flash, and probably a little worse as the flash is brighter. Just because you can see the internals as bright as day when a few million candlepower flash goes off doesn't mean they'll show up equally well under the lighting in your room.

These things will look much better in person.

One really great thing about the G5 is that it has no screws to undo when putting in or taking out hard drives, or any other part of the computer. Pretty innovative if you ask me!

First, mostly on topic: I agree that you won't be able to see in that well under normal lighting conditions. And in fact, I think the visibility is sort of cool--kinda like the transparent iMac cases, but in metal.

More off topic:
I agree with the handful here that like form follows function. You look at essentially any PC case, and basically you have some drive bays in front, some ports in the back, and everything else more or less jammed into the innards wherever they fit. Then you slap some air guides on it to get the airflow where it needs to be.

The G5 is exactly the opposite. What is really important: you can get to the RAM and expansion slots with the side panel off, you have a spot upfront for an accessable drivebay, and everything stays cool. The most important function of a computer case, after keeping stuff from falling all over, is to help air flow over hot things.

Does everything need to be in one, big open area to stay cool? Quite the opposeite--it'd be better if the things that need to be really cool had their own little well-ventilated space. Hence the G5: everything gets cool in the most efficient way possible, and it's way easy to get your hands in for expansion.

So what if you have to have a big cheese grater up front to provide adequate airflow? That's what makes the machine work better. That's what I want under my desk (where most towers are anyway).

It makes a statement: function counts.

airport antenna

the really innovative thing would be if apple built the airport antenna not in the case..but inTO the case...sorta like how the newer cars are building antenna's into the rear windows...it enhances reception..making it not just an innovation but a technological advance..
