Ok, you can't put the antenna in the case because the all metal design would bounce the signal around *inside* and it would never get out.

Also, the small antenna attached in the pics hooks up to a connection that can also be used for a longer cable for different locations - gives you a better chance of getting a signal if you can move it around.

I don't see a problem with it. Interesting set up, too. :D

Maybe there's no "news" to report? Unless you want them to make stuff up...

I don't think there is a problem if you can see a little bit of the "insides" from the front. My Blueberry iMac was designed so you could see inside of it and it still looks cool.

The G5 is exactly the opposite. What is really important: you can get to the RAM and expansion slots with the side panel off, you have a spot upfront for an accessable drivebay, and everything stays cool. The most important function of a computer case, after keeping stuff from falling all over, is to help air flow over hot things.

Exactly... for those of us who have built computers by hand, we know exactly what a pain in the arse it is to get everything in... even on my own windows box: I just replaced the heatsink for the cpu, and in order to remove the old unit, I actually had to remove the first RAM module. I have a window on the side of that machine (mostly for the built-in fan... AMD chips need some serious cooling), but it is a hideous mess of cables and whatnot. The G5, by comparison, is perhaps the most beautifully organised setup I've ever seen. And I'm a fan of the case... the function is great, and the form fits in with my office decor smashingly. Bravo.

I looked into this and asked several people at apple. They are not currently planning on selling the part to the public for installation outside of the factory. You may be able to get it at some-point from an authorized repair shop, but you shouldn't plan on it ever being available. If you need it internal, get a custom built g5.

Uggh the way the pricing works for us the difference between a stock model straight of apple and a custom built from apple store is about $800 at the moment. Hopefully the 15'' ally pbook will come with bluetooth built in.

apples stuff always looks better on their websit than in real life

I would have to disagree, at least on one point, if not many. When I first saw the original iMac on Apple's website, I thought it was the ugliest looking computer ever. However, when I got to see one in the store (at the midnight release when my parents bought one), I thought that it was no where near as unattractive as the photos on Apple's website made it look.

I've felt similar about a number of different models that Apple has put out.

And does ANYONE think the G5 is a good looking machine, especially when on the desktop next to the monitor and temp keyboard and mouse?

While I will agree that the combination of the old screen and keyboard with the new tower isn't all that attractive, I rather like the look of the new tower, and not just for functional reasons, thought there is that too.

I think that with a new display and properly styled keyboard and mouse (someone suggested a keyboard like those that the PowerBooks carry), this could be a spectacular looking machine.

I just think about what it would look like to have a G5 sitting next to my PowerBook, and the image is quite appealing (and not just because I'd really like a new G5!).

Dudes... am I seeing things or what?! Is that two "G4"s carved into the heat sinks?!

I can confirm that at least one person really likes the way the G5 case looks, because I do.

G4 in G5???

you're not, i think... i couldn't believe it and just downloaded the PDF myself... and it's there. maybe the manual was done very early when they were not quite sure yet about IBM delivering the chips? ...well, that must've been VERY early then...

Reason why the PowerMac G5 looks awful in these shots:

Camera flash.

In real life situations, you're not going to be able to see into the casing, because it will be dark in there. The flash on the camera is illuminating the inside (through the holes) as well as the outside.

If you need BT, but don't want a CTO (which you can get from places other than directly from Apple), just buy a USB dongle.

Maybe the G5 will look better in person, but generaly apples stuff looks worse in person

I find the opposite to be true, but even if they are ugly in person, I want one. It'll just go on the floor anyway.

BTW, not to flame, but posting the same negative comment 3 times in the discussion to raise you post count is generally frowned upon. It's almost as bad as insulting Arn (and/or the validity of content). I'm looking at you wondermite.

Just a warning. ;)

They probably released the manual early and in case it got into the wrong hands (rumors) etc. wanted to mis-lead people. You know how Apple can be.

i dont think i will ever get used to the g5. i think its so fugly. i got used to the imac g3, ended up buying one, i got used to the G4 design. I used to hate the alu design too but now i thiink its uber-cool.

SUmmary:

alu, G4, imac g3, cube=good
g5=bad

:)

I love the minimalist design of the G5... But to each their own... Simplistic but brilliant design IMO

I agree. Pictures simply don't have the same capabilities as the eye/brain looking at the real thing. You notice very subtle things almost subconsiously, and this makes a big difference in your perception. For a good example, try looking at a picture of a mountain. Now look at the mountain itself. An enormous difference.

Apparently they have now updated the PDF to accurately indicate the new processors...

Nope, Just 49 bucks more. You don't have to add any other options. By custom, I meant you had to add the internal Bluetooth option, not that you had to add all the frickin' options.

When I first saw the new iMac on apples website I thought it was the coollsest thing, but after seeing it in person I thought it didn't look as good. And now, I see them evrywhere so I am realy tired of them

Could it be, you're just a troll? Because everything I hear from you is how ugly all the Macs are (looking at your last posts). Well, a lot of designers will say something else. You may have your opinion, but is it necessary, that you mention it this often just to receive attention as it seems?

looks

someone said here that Apples stuff always looks better on their website than in real life. I think it's just the opposite (most of the time).

But, yeah, the G5 is freaking huge, and will find it's home under my desk as well.

As far as looks go, here's my Apple list, from beautiful to ugly.

The beautiful:
1) Original iMac (I tried to replace mine recently, but i just couldn't, I like it so much)
2) TiBook
3) PowerMac G4
4) Latest Powerbooks
5) Latest iBook
6) The new iMac

The undecided:
PowerMac G5 (obviously, since I haven't seen it in person)

The Ugly:
1) The old iBook (that tried to look like an iMac - blech!)
2) eMac (it's so unfriendly especially compared to the original iMac)
