Please, no. Just...no.

I am all for allowing devices at all stages of flight, but I do not want to be one a plane full of people screaming into their phones.

May god have mercy on our souls.

Forget frequent flyer miles - I'll book flights on airlines that don't allow voice cell use.

Babies crying to loud **** talking non-stop and rude.
no thanks

Get ear plugs. If there is danger people can make phone calls.

Do people still talk on their phones? Seriously? I bet I used less than 20 mins of talk time a month. But I send around 3000 SMS

Exactly. I rarely talk on the phone if ever. The airlines want you to pay for their overpriced wifi service.

Voice on a flight will really, really suck.

One of the nice things about a plane flight (and there are very few) is that it is relatively quiet.

Once anyone can call anyone else and talk forever with their unlimited minutes, it's over. People can only take so much of having to listen to others talk on their phones.

This is one of the few technologies I think we can do without. Bring on the data, but NO VOICE CALLS!!!

Am I the only one not ready for this ?

I mean I have grown up with the don't use a phone on a flight or we will all die lot and now from nowhere it seems yea you can all use your phones.

I cant think of many calls that would be worth thw risk, and as said by others airlines are still twlling you to turn off devices so what makes some flights while caution on others.

Free Wifi

Instead on allowing calls, they should introduce free wifi but restricts calls.

you can talk on phones in stores.. is it really much of a problem?
you can talk on phones in restaurants.. is it really much of a problem?
you can talk on phones while a passenger in someone's car.. is it really much of a problem?

what's going to happen all of a sudden that when people step onto an airplane, ground behaviors no longer apply?

because from what i gather, people are generally more well behaved on flights as opposed to when they're on the ground.

so there's not much of a problem with cellphone usage while on the ground in similar circumstances and the problem will be even that much less while on an airplane.

I don't fly much, but when I do, it'll be nice to finally be able to use these devices instead of staring blankly at the tarmac.

Yes, yes, and yes. Of course there are some (nicer) restaurants that don't allow cell phone use inside.

You also need to understand who many of the passengers are on most flights. They're businessmen still "on the clock". If they have the option to talk clients, coworkers, and their boss, they'll probably do so in large numbers.

THAT is exactly why I personally am against allowing cell service on a plane.

These cell services on planes will be prohibitively expensive. There have been phones on planes for many years, how many people use them? Look at that little remote control on your entertainment system, that is a phone. Obviously everybody mentioning idiots using their phones in public places is never that offending idiot themselves.

If people want to gab for an hour at $3 a minute let them do it. Might be more annoying in business class than economy. People in cattle class can't afford it.

Sometimes the people on this board come off as condescending douches, especially as 90% of posters have missed the point that this will not be normal cell service charged at normal fees.

I have used the skyphone a few times on a flight at $3.95 per minute billed to my card. If I have something urgent that comes up that makes that call worth it to me to pay for to arrange things on the ground, too bad for you sitting next to me. I will also stop bathing before flying in the feature.

TLDR, 90% of the comments here are missing the mark and come across as misinformed whiners.

Yes it is a problem...and I usually want to kill these people.

No

I question the safety of allowing voice calls on aircraft. An hour or two of a couple hundred asshats yelling into their cell phones is likely to make a lot of people resort to brutal violence.

Just shut up

The FCC's jurisdiction is safety, not manners.

All the people screaming about not wanting to listen to their neighbor talk on the phone on a plane should also be asking the FCC to make it illegal for babies to cry and illegal for kids to kick the seat in front of them.

Just shut up about it.

Oh, and by the way, I've made phone calls on a plane before. Think "WiFi calling" and those ancient phones that they used to have popping out of the back of the seat in front of you.

Hell no.

Give it a rest already, shut your damn mouth and be a contributor to yourself and everyone else enjoying a peaceful ride.

it's apparent that you and many others feel there's a problem with other's cell phone habits.. i would suggest if it's such a problem, you lobby against the use of cell phones while on the ground.. a random guess is that the people showing concern here average around 30hrs per year on an airplane.. why waste all efforts focusing on not allowing cels on planes when it's obvious you should be rallying against what happens the other 364 days per year while youre on the ground?

re-read what you've written.

Some of you guys come off as really anti social lol

Just anti ####hole. Probably not very different. Social in the way you're suggesting isn't. It's just selfish and inconsiderate. I expect the amount of time and the loudness of the "conversation" is inversely related to IQ.
Not sure if you were attempting sarcasm.

And lastly, heaven help us if we learn to actually respect each other and communicate our problems with those around us in a nice and polite way

You clearly don't travel very often. If you trust other people to make appropriate decisions and act like adults, don't ever set foot in an airport.
