Fear for the Base 15" 2016 rMBP because of dGPU ?

@arbitrage here above is saying he is using some APP which helps him decide if he wants to use the iGPU or the dGPU I think most likely he is talking about GFXCARDSTATUS. I checked the GFXCARDSTATUS website it does say you can control your GPU with this.
 
Almost 6 years on a Early 2011 15" MBP with dGPU with no issues other than it dying a few years ago from the well known recall.
And yes, I always use the dGPU and frequently game with it on Windows with the fan blowing at full speed and it getting very hot 😛 If problems were to happen, they would've happened by now!
 
Highly likely GFXCARDSTATUS as this is the only App that ever has such functionality. If so concerned look at the 2015 15" with integrated graphics only, it will also save you a lot of $$$$ and certainly for the next couple years more practice given the slow uptake of USB C.

I`ve owned multiple 15" MBP and to be honest your better to buy the 2nd or 3rd Gen, the 1st Gen can be hit and miss. The 2015`s will likely be very reliable the 2016 is completely unknown proposition. Much depends on your priorities late & greatest or stability & reliability and I doubt that in use you wouldn't experience a vast difference in performance.

my 2015 15 rmbp has issues with dGPU, so i`d rather stay away from it in newer macbooks

apple has a dodgy record on mbp with dedicated gpu

So if it died/stopped working how is it working for you now ?
 
You know, there are applications that you can have to force it to only use the Integrated GPU so you should be good

Touch bar is not driven by dGPU or iGPU for that matter. It has its own ARM based processor, with (some are saying) modified watchOS. Shouldn't be a big hit on the battery

My daughter ruined my old Macbook Air by constantly gaming on it, fan was always full blast. It sort of killed the battery.

I ruined the battery of my old Sony Z series laptop by gaming on it as well.

So, consider yourself lucky!

No just asking. Haven't used this so...You are saying this APP can if you wish constantly, continuously without any break help you to switch to only iGPU mode if you wish ?

Yes. Like in my case I always have the integrate GPU on, dGPU I will switch when playing games and stuff

How long have you been using your Mac like this ? switching on and off to iGPU and dGPU ? How long have you had your Mac ? And how long have you been using GFXCARDSTATUS ?

For about 4 years I have my mbpro like this with gfx. I have a 2008 mbpro
 
Like any electronic equipment, there is a certain failure percentage no matter what. MBP is no different. It's just that more than average amount of failure has been observed for 2011-2014 (?) MBP's.

You can't live your life expecting failure, otherwise you won't be able to do anything. Paralysis by analysis as some might call it.

Currently I have 2011 15" MBP. From the beginning it has been connected to a monitor >99% of the time, so dGPU gets used all the time. The only time I don't have it connected to a monitor is when I travel.

I never had any issue until 6 months ago. But got the logic board replaced for free. But that's after 5 years of constant dGPU use > 10 hours a day as my MBP is my work and personal computer. By then you would expect an electronic equipment to fail one way or another.

Do I expect it to fail again? Sure but it may be something different not dGPU. Some day something will fail, but that's life.

Make sure you get an older version of GFXCARDSTATUS as newer ones cannot be forced to use iGPU.

Yea there was a sodering issue with the dGPUs on the macbook pros from end of 2010- around 2013 I think. There was actually a class action lawsauit against apple to fix out of warrenty laptops for free.
 
MacBook with dGPU = it'll die eventually die due to graphics card. If you want to keep it for long long time, choose a model without dgpu.

Like I have said before I have a dilemma there, I only wanna buy the 15" rMBP for the screen real estate and the 2016 rMBP's, the one's which were announced on the 27th there aren't any without the dGPU, they both come with dGPU, both the variants.

I'm in the same exact boat, my thought process is just get AppleCare and if any issues arises get it fixed for free. Hopefully because these ones aren't very powerful and were designed to run very cool they shouldn't cause any problems. I for one don't use much power so I'm hoping it doesn't turn on often.
