So there’s no explanation why a 3 year old 2018 iPad Pro got Face ID and NO notch, and somehow a new 2021 MacBook Pro needed a notch and NO FaceID and people swallowed that hook line and sinker.

Also, Apple failed to include HDMI 2.1, WiFi 6e, and Bluetooth 5.1 all of which have been around and Apple just forgot.

I guess we can hope for a refresh in 2022.

The iPad Pro does have a notch; it’s simply hidden by the thick black border. With or without faceid, the MBP would have had a small cutout at the top for the webcam either way.

Here is my best guess:
  • HDMI 2.1, WiFi 6e, and Bluetooth 5.1: not included because of the chip shortage

Where does it state that they wanted to include them on the MBP - and in addition - why would they owe you an explanation? The specs are public for months now, make your peace with them or move on or wait.

I am not a fan of the notch, but if Apple had put the same bezels from the iPad Pro on the MacBook Pro screen, people would have complained as much, if not more than with the notch. I agree that HDMI 2.1 and Wi-Fi 6e would have been a nice addition, but they have to keep reasons to upgrade next year I guess

I don’t want Face ID on a laptop. I’m just too paranoid. Keep post-it notes over all my computer cameras at home and work as it is. And I don’t get the notch controversy at all. We got more screen with a notch…moved those menus up and out of the way And I can get another row of a spreadsheet in view. Better HDMI, Bluetooth, and WiFi would have been a plus...but no computer is perfect. This round of MPBs approached that with a big step forward though.

all of that said, I’m such a hypocrite. I don’t cover my iPad cameras…go figure.

Having Face ID in your laptop isn’t going to be any different than having a webcam in terms of security …

I don't understand why so many want Face ID on a MBP.
I don’t understand why anyone doesn’t. See what I did there?

The iPad Pro has no notch with thin bezels. You are looking at the wrong device if you see a notch.

Remember the thing about component shortages? That was real, and many industry are still chaotic right now.

The notch is obvious, the size warrants faceID sensor. I mean if it were just for a webcam, Apple could’ve done tear drop or punch hole instead of a large notch. My guess is due to component shortages, Apple prioritized iPhones and iPads.

As for the rest of the tech, do note that this probably was developed at the same time as the regular M1, meaning it was set way back, using whatever available for the M1 back then.

Those things will not be included in 2022, Apple will save stuff like Face ID in 3+ years time for the next redesign.

In comparison to the 2018 iPad Pro the 2021 MBPs have far narrower bezels in which it's impossible to store an acceptable webcam and FaceID tech, although I do agree the notch definitely doesn't have to be it's current size to maintain a 1080p webcam the notch is necessary to fit a current day standard web in the least.

HDMI 2.1, WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.1 didn't make it because of the bandwidth limitations with the M1 - series. Compared to previous intel MacBooks the current generation has slower WiFi 5 speeds due to hardware limitations with M1(pro/max).

Over the years this certainly must improve and can't be ignored but we shouldn't be this aggressive with these imperfections considering M1 Max/Pro are still just larger iterations of M1 which is still apple's first generation of laptop/desktop chips.

P.S - Widening an A-series chip is far harder than it seems

To make Face ID work in an iPhone, you make a specific movement and put the camera in front of your face, deliberately. And it’s nice because your hands/fingers may be needed to hold the device or other objects, and reaching buttons gets inconvenient.
When you look to your MacBook screen, perhaps you don’t want it to unlock; it’s better to choose. If you want, your hands are ready to just touch an only key (at easy reach), in a keyboard full of keys you’ll be using immediately after.
I find it completely logical.

The iPad has Face ID because the chassis is thicker, allowing room for all four sensors. Also, there is no notch because the border on the iPad is thicker.

But then you may just be trolling…

Same.

If Face ID was to activate automatically like people assume, the user wouldn’t be able to control basic things like the login screen or purchases - they would just initiate. Therefore to get around this, you would still need to click on a button to tell MacOS that you want to, for instance, make a purchase.

Touch ID doesn’t have this issue because you have to actively choose to put your finger over the sensor to activate it; to me at least that actually seems like the more convenient option.

Finally there’s the value proposition. To fit Face ID into the screen mounting with a decent thickness, a lot of engineering feats would be required. Is it worth passing that cost of thickness and components onto the user for a feature that already exists well on the keyboard?

What I find odd is that despite the notch the camera really isn't that good. My iMac Pro camera looks much better than the new MacBook Pro's do.

Because, if my calculations are correct, it’s roughly 8 trillion times more convenient than the Touch ID button.
I’m going to have to kindly disagree on that one. Face ID on the iPhone is annoying for me, especially with masks. It sometimes doesn’t work when I need it most like when I have only one hand free or something

Because it's convenient and fast. I use Windows Hello on my Dell XPS 9510, and by the time I have the screen fully open, it's recognized my face and I'm logged in, ready to go.
TouchID can be just as fast and more secure. But anyway, faceID doesn't work at all if you need to be wearing a mask right now. I don't use either in Windows, I just use a PIN or a password, it always works, with a mask, with a dirty finger, whatever.
