thinner (the ipad 2 was thin enough)
lighter (by half)
better battery (double it)

and if they can, 3d is awesome for gaming and certain movies

- Lightweight!
- More efficient components like an IGZO display for better efficiency (needs a lot less backlight power wich = less heat at full brightness and longer battery life)
-faster charging
- Flawless screen (better QC)
- updated look

The main feature I would like is limiting returns to around 5 times. That would be great!

Maybe include that in the specs:

New quad core!
Ultra bright screen!
128GB storage!
Max returns: 5 times!

well, one can dream.....

First of all, the matte screen idea is not happening. The glass is required since the iPad needs a strong surface to take a tap-beating. Second, two front facing speakers would look odd unless if they just did small holes like the mic, and then the speakers would sound awful. Third, if you rotate the iPad vertically, your channels would be vertical up and down, which would not work.

Here is what I want to see in an iPad 4:

- incremental screen improvement in QC and just overall quality (right now it's great as is, but there is always room for improvement)... Likely won't be seeing it in the iPad 4, but a true OLED retina display of some sort would be much more power efficient... Something along that idea would be nice
- increased battery life through an improved battery as well as hardware improvements... 2 hours additional?? More would be nice but some increment would be nice
- raise base to 32gb and highest to 128gb
- incremental improvement on hardware... CPU double in theoretical performance, GPU similar in improvement to CPU, and RAM increase by another 512MB or even 1GB depending on the improvement on the CPU and GPU
- incremental improvements on wifi and other communication features like Bluetooth and 4g or whatever will be the next cell service
- rear facing camera improvement in quality especially on close up shots... Also just overall better quality to capture more and allow for a better digital zoom
- front facing camera improvement to at least the quality of the current rear camera in the new iPad
- led flash added to the rear

Features I don't care for are weight reduction or thickness reduction. As it is, I'm no weakling... It's light enough for me to cary around all day in one hand, and it's thin enough that I can carry it anywhere no problem.

A couple new features I'd like to see invented or thrown in to the ipad one day are:
- no glasses 3D tech (with a switch to set between 2D and 3D mode, and 2D not degrading in quality as a result)
- altered port connection so it clicks in like MagSafe, can be ripped out, but also clicks in so that it's harder to rip out than just regular MagSafe power... A sort of connection that cannot have any pieces broken... Right now the connection is fine but there is a piece in the iPad which can be broken if things get yanked in a funny way

Lighter weight, thinner profile, faster CPU, more RAM, improved battery, better camera, sexier display: these are the obvious improvements that will most likely be part of the iPad 4. Of course, other places could use major improvement: finger tracking speed should be near instantaneous (i.e. Microsoft's prototype tech), and I agree built-in speaker audio could be superior (somehow, but I see the dilemma with "stereo").

It is the game changer addition that I am waiting for. For the tablet, this is most likely haptic feedback, as I don't know of anything that is more evolutionary and useful whilst still remaining pragmatic for implementation. It adds a whole new dimension to the computing experience and the technology doesn't seem too far from being honed properly. A major complaint I have with typing on the iPad is the lack of physical sensation of the keyboard; I can type better on a keyboard with my eyes closed than I can on my iPad with eyes open. Adding tactile sensation would solve this problem and create only-to-be-imagined enhancements to things like games, music creation, drawing, and so on.

1) One unit that can handle both AT&T and Verizon SIM cards for 4G use.
2) Front facing dual stereo speakers.
3) 128 Gigs of on board storage.
4) Anti-glare matte screen.
5) 8 MP back facing camera with 1080p and an LED flash ( or two ).
6) Micro SD card ( or regular size SD card ) for extra storage.
7) Two headphone jacks.
1. Do CDMA carriers offer a SIM card? I'm not sure as I'm not in the US.
2. This is not gonna happen due to aesthetics.
3. There shouldn't be any technical problems.
4. It's not gonna happen. It's a freaking touch screen.
5. LED flash on an iPad is not gonna happen
6. When hell freezes over it will happen.
7. Do you have four ears? :p

I'm really happy with iPad 3 hardware, I'm just hoping for software improvements.

-"card" style app switching
-RAW image file support in the OS
-rich text editor API so that debs don't have to roll their own...leading to...
-Xcode for iPad- debug on device, or to others wirelessly.
-better app-app file sharing. I like their sand boxing idea, but sometimes it just doesn't work - for example, sending an email with two different file type attachments, it just can't be done.

Going through this thread it looks like we are at a point where there is nothing really big to expect from next iPad. I dont see any feature which if left out will make people mad (like leaving out 4g in ipad3 would have been). It looks like it will be another incremental update.

I would like an updated UI. The current one does things well but the look is getting stale.

Widgets please !

I'd like to see a higher resolution digitizer to make note taking and drawing more precise.

More powerful CPU.

improved screen requiring less power.

i dont know how useful it would be but those senseg screens or "Feel Screens" back during the rumor days for the iPad 3 created a huge hit.

Ahh Haptic Display Tech is the word i was looking for.

What's so special about that tech? I've had that on my my 1st gen Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

You're thinking of a simple vibration motor. Shyam is talking about the fairly new electrostatic technology that supposedly lets you feel virtual "textures" under your finger.

One hardware "feature" I begin to see is the bezel, or how big it is currently. I understand that some amount of bezel is needed to give some room for thumbs to rest on it, but I think iPad has more than needed for that purpose. If you want to make almost any screen look outdated, it's the amount of bezel. As we go forward, we'll get less bezel on our devices.

On the other hand that brings up the question of accidental side taps. Eventually I think they'll tackle this problem somehow while reducing bezel as much as possible. Another problem is that it does reduce the size of cavity available for battery but that can be solved as chips and display get more efficient.

Since apple has now done matte on the rMBP...id says its a real possibility. IMO, weight and thickness are key elements of an improved device. iPads are too heavy/bulky.

The thickness and weight of a magazine, though impossible now, is where they need to be.

I just wish it to be a bit
-lighter
-thinner
-with better battery life
-with less glare
