ipod hi-fi

Read this post on another site - sounded pretty sweet. Would definitely buy a bunch of these speakers right away...

The new "iPod Boombox" is not what you think. Instead it will be wireless satellite speakers based on Airport Express. Each speaker will sell for $100 and have an integrated WiFi point so they will only need to plug into the wall outlet. Each speaker will have full stereo, so you do not need to buy them in pairs unless you want to. An added accessory will be the long-awaited WiFi dock for the iPod so the speakers can recieve input from the iPod or iTunes. Remember the low-key addition in iTunes 6.03 of the ability to stream to multiple speakers simultaneously? The new Universal dock will be updated to support a remote that is not infared so you can control it from anywhere in the house. Another addition will be a small dock-connected WiFi transmitter for the iPod itself (so you don't have to use the Dock), in which case the iPod will function as the transmitter and remote in one unit. Oh, and did I mention that each speaker will be approximately the SIZE of the current Airport Express? They will work with Bose to get great sound from a very portable design that everyone will want. These speakers will also double as a WiFi point for your computer.

i don't know how you know this or how true it is, but it finally sounds about right. this sounds like the most "truthful" rumor and i actually think it might be spot on. sounds pretty good and i think i might actually buy it!

Such a product would be worthwhile if the iPod had built-in wireless. Alas, though, Apple, thus-far, has resisted implementing such a thing.

(I'm not a big fan of dongles, which the above appears to suggest would be Apple's "solution" to the lack of wireless in the iPod:

Another addition will be a small dock-connected WiFi transmitter for the iPod itself (so you don't have to use the Dock), in which case the iPod will function as the transmitter and remote in one unit.

Ouch. This is a horrible kludge to be coming from the design champions of modern consumer electronics.)

I vote no, this isn't it. The price is too low for Apple. The wireless-add-on-to-iPod thing is horrible as a concept. Just doesn't ring true, even if there are some nice ideas at the heart of this one.

BOSE: 90% marketing, 10% technology

they market you into thinking it sounds good.

In all seriousness... the rumour sounded good until bose was mentioned. You'de think apple would have the good sense to go with a manufacturer who actually makes decent products.

That and the fact that Bose would never let their name be stamped on something in the sub $200 range.

agree about the bose part. why can't apple team up with b&w or some other speaker company? i'd pay $$ for an apple-b&w product. yummy.

but i'd buy something that gave my ipod wi-fi/remote/speaker capabilities...and for $100? definitely (though i, too, doubt this price. i think $300 seems about right)

edit: it seems that bose has their own announcement on march 2, quite possibly an ipod competitor, so i doubt the above rumor about the bose partnership is real. thank goodness.

I think FOR SURE there will be a movies announcement tomorrow because of Apples website. If you enter www.apple.com/ with any bogus word behind it you get a "looking for something?" page.

However, when you type in www.apple.com/movies you get "Access Forbidden", which suggests to me that the page exists and is on hold (until tomorrow?).
nice. movie downloads, eh?

Wow! Just...wow! Very impressive detective work, Fluid! I think that this is the most telling and solid evidence yet about what we may see later this morning! I can't wait...alllrrriiiggghhhttt! :D

so I take it that these are basically Airport Express with small speakers attached to them? These better sound damn amazing for them to go for $100 a pop.

It would be pretty cool if iTunes let you 'tune' the speakers for surround sound so if people wanted to splurge, they could get five of these and get surround sound for movies and stuff. How cool would it be if the speakers used the wireless signals to spot when the user has entered the room with his laptop. So a person could go from room to room and the speakers automatically switch on and off. Now, THAT would be worth $100.

One more thing: these speakers better handle more than just iTunes; they need to work with, at minimum, Apple's DVD player and Quicktime.

actually, for $100 they'd be very crappy speakers. air express alone costs more than that. if it indeed has the air express capabilities plus speakers (and assuming they're decent speakers) it will cost more like $300. you're not going to get anything decent for $100.

I really hope this "boombox" of theirs has an LCD screen on it, to view all my videos on a larger monitor.

I recently bought a "cheap" set of Altec Lansing speakers and they are brilliant.

I really think Apple can't go wrong if they go with Altec Lansing, B&W or JBL speakers if they do finally bring out the iBoomBox that everyone is talking about.

Well that's my USD$0.02 :D

Hmm.., I think the iPod shuffles reaching its EOL.

I havent seen any at all in all the stores I've been to, and when I went to the Apple store last night with my iBook, poof, none to be seen on the showfloor, when they still had a 15" PBG4 on show, with the orginal price tag. Looked at Walmart, who used to have a buttload of em, none to be found, and they say they dont stock em anymore. They had a buttload of nanos and videos.
