actually, I was placing the object on the shelf, and it slipped out of my hand. Completely my fault, but still made me mad.

I have another question, can Apple replace aluminum part of the computer that actually shows the damage? Ill take a picture and post it to show you what I mea.

...they can replace it but at your cost due to it being an "accident"...

i'm 99999999999.999% sure, based off of previous macbook pro repair experiences, that Apple will need to replace the entire display assembly which includes the lcd, the top case, everything.

So it's going to be quite expensive.

If thats the case, i wont have the top replaced, just have them fix the clicking. What does that repair generally cost? AMEX covers me up to $1000

we don't know what the clicking is. If it's the hard drive like suspected earlier, that's as expensive or cheap as you want. I don't know how much apple will charge but it shouldn't be more than $100 dollars and that's on the very high side. You can replace it yourself with a different one with larger capacity for cheaper than what Apple will cost you.

As far as the top case goes you may want to get it repaired anyway. If anything goes wrong in the future regarding the display, they will point at the dent as the cause. If they replace it, they should reinstate the warranty.

Eddy how much would you think the top case and all that would cost to repair?

Uhm

from iFixit the price is $749.95.

From WeLoveMacs it's 649.95.

So from Apple expect atleast that amount plus labor, assuming they don't fix it for free.

I say assuming, because there were people in the iPhone forum who dropped their machines on the first-second day and shattered the glass, then Apple replaced it for free. If you're nice they may help you out but do not plan on it.

I dont plan on it. Thats GREAT news though. Even if it costs $795 plus labor, that should still be under $1000 which means I would be covered by AMEX.

Thanks!

Update:

The noise sounds like a flickering light bulb. I finally pin pointed it. Any idea on what it could be?

The display's backlight. I'm assuming you won't hear any flickering if you turn the display off (but leave the MBP on). The entire top case would have to be replaced, though, as that would be very difficult to fix.

That makes sense, the object fell on the top casing part. How can I turn the screen off but keep the laptop on?

If you have a external display/tv and suitable connector you can plug it in, close the lid and then using a usb device wake the machine. It will be run in clamshell mode and you can then reopen the lid and the screen will remain off. You can then use the macbook's keyboard and trackpad. To return to normal unplug the external display.

Your Applecare warranty is null and void, as far as Apple is concerned, until you let Apple repair your computer, as any damage that may or may not have happened, may have been caused by that damage.

I'm gonna see what happens tomorrow at my genius bar appt. Now that i know that Amex will cover it, I'm not as concerned, I'm just hoping that the repair is under a grand. Right now my computer is in my waterproof pelican case aka suit of armor until tomorrow

Ouch...that pictures makes my heart ache. Only two days old too. :(

Hope it all works out for you OP.

I'm not about to void the warranty on my 2 day old computer. I'll let Apple take a look and give me a quote then file a claim with Amex

neither of those will void your warranty. unless you lose, break, or strip a screw. then your warranty goes out the window. (or so ive heard)

update: sorry about saying something that already has been said.

So I was placing something on a high shelf and it fell of directly on my 2 day old macbook  There is a huge scratch on the back of the computer by the apple logo which is also slightly dented...

I turn my computer on, everything seems to be working okay. But now every 5-10 seconds or less, a part inside the computer seems to be shaking making almost a clicking noise. Now I know that accidental damage isnt covered in Apples warranty, and probably not in Apple Care either.

Am I screwed? Do I have any options to try and get it fixed? The back i dont really care about, I can buy a case. But the noise cant be good. it happens most when Im typing or moving the computer so I assume the part is just floating around inside the computer.

Please tell me that there is something I can do.

anyone?

It's possible if the dent is small enough you can trick them somehow...say the hard drive is failing or something

Repeatedly press the brightness down button until the display turns off. You would need to hook your MBP up to an external monitor to do anything, but you could tell if it was the backlight that was damaged if you wanted to confirm that.

why is that?

so they cant see it. duh... its also not a bad idea. put like a bumper sticker over it or sumthin. just make sure you can peel it off later without damaging the finish

edit: put like a huge windows sticker on there just to piss em off

I'm not trying to hide the dent, attempting to claim that theres just some problem. The dent is clearly the reason for the problem. Plus, I'm not that type of person
