I'm not trying to hide the dent, attempting to claim that theres just some problem. The dent is clearly the reason for the problem. Plus, I'm not that type of person

if they didnt know about the dent they would just be like "oh, i guess its a hardware malfunction. lets not bother to look whats goin on under this sticker" or something along those lines. but if thats not the type of person you are well thats okay too. just be prepared to possibly have to spend a little bit more money

I know, but even if that was the case, if they fix what's going on inside, I would still have a huge scratch/dent on my computer. I'm also covered by American express up to $1000 so even if the whole LCD lid needs to be repaired, I should be okay.

haha i wouldnt be so sure about that.theres no reason to believe that it will cost less than a thousand. if it is less im sure it wont be by much either. apple is notorious for charging way to much for repairs because that got you by the balls. most people are to afraid to take apart their >1500 dollar machines and fix the problem themselves so they take it to apple and get charged thru the nose for it. they would rather have their precious warranties intact than get in there take stuff apart and have a little fun while saving money in the process.

warranties are one of the biggest scams out there (next to religion of course) and companies make huge amounts of money a year because of them.

We'll see. And warrantys, at least in my experience, have not been scams. Actually quite the opposite. All depends on the company. I'm hoping that it will cost less than $1000, the whole computer is only worth 1700. If it's not, I'll pay the rest out of pocket. Hopefully it's a simple fix and everything will be fine.

all the warratnies that i have had for the most part have gone unused so i stopped buying them. and i hope for your sake its under a thousand too. i certainly wouldnt want to be in your position right now.

I would think that they would check for dents carefully to see if there was any physical damage. When I worked for Asus that was the first thing I did when I got a warranty repair item in.

You are taking it really well OP! I hope everything works out for you!

warranties are useless !IF! people don't read the fine print i.e. holding on to the receipt and the like. I could see throwing away a receipt for like a burger at a resturaunt but if you buy a $1000 TV and don't hold on to the original stuff it's the buyers own fault.

I've routinely gotten new , updated stuff from manufacturers (apple included) because something went duff one/two weeks out of the extended warranty, so I call them up and since the model is so old, they just send me something brand new.

And with AppleCare well the machine is only 2 days old so there are lots of things that could go wrong atleast in the included one year warranty.

If he had purchased Applecare then 2 days later invalidated his warranty by accidental damage, all he'd need to do is call up Apple and tell them to refund him the prorated amount because they (legally) refuse to adhere to the contract.

i didnt say they were useless. i said they went un used. as in i didnt need them. i know how to keep a receipt (you probably dont want to see my filing cabinet) plust if you use a store credit card im sure they keep records of your purchases in a database. i know bestbuy does.

last time i used a warranty was to get new headphones for my ipod touch cuz the ones it comes with suck. and it was within 90 days of buying it so i still didnt need the extended warranty (which i bought)

Sorry to see your 2-day old MBP damaged like that... I know the feeling, because I dropped my bag in a hurry to catch a plane and the corner hit the ground damaging my MBP inside as shown in the picture below. All the ports were functioning OK, so I used it for 11 months after that... Last week, I left it at an authorized Apple repair center to get a price quote to replace the bottom part. To my surprise, when I called the next day, they said that it will be covered under warranty! I got it back 24 hours later and it was like brand new!

I am not saying that they will repair yours under warranty, but you never know.

As for the repair cost... As mentioned before the entire screen assembly needs to be replaced and it costs around $800+labor. It's the "beauty" of the MBP design, right? When I used to have DELL XPS laptops, they sent me new LCD screens under warranty and I replaced them myself :D

Good luck with your repairs. If the price is more than $1K at the Apple Store, you can always ask any reputable Apple authorized repair center in your area to see if they can fix it for around $1K if that's the most AMEX will cover.

Wow, you are very lucky to have that happen to you.

Apple might be sympathetic and try and help you in some way, but they won't cover it for you.

Yeah, right, Apple won't be the slightest bit sympathetic. In fact, they'll go so far as to not honor the warranty on the machine AT ALL, even for known product issues.

If your AMEX covers $1000, just pay the rest out of pocket. It won't be as deep. Sure, it might hurt your wallet again, but after they fix it, your Applecare will be back in place.

If the noise sounds like a metal on metal click whenever you move it, its probably the same "problem" everyone has in the new MBP's, there is an intentionally lose bracket inside them that causes this issue, it's been all over the macrumors forums but has now been forgotten about, I have two factory shipped new MBP's at home, never even so much as place on a rough surface and they BOTH have the clink noise.

Test to see if it happens with the machine off (has to be after use so it's warm inside).

see here for solution:

That is 100% EXACTLY what the noise I'm hearing is. I'm not sure if this is good news or bad news though, the noise is really annoying and I would like it fixed. Even if they just fix that, and not my top lcd lid, I'll be happy. I'm buying the Speck SeeThru Satin in black, so the markings will be covered up.

However I'll let the geniuses take a look at it and see what happens, if the quote is substantially higher than $1000 for the lid, while still having them fix the metallic noise, I'll just deal with it. Things get scratched up/ bruised anyways.

Thank you to Tenderidol and Johan for that info, really comforted me a little knowing I'm not the only one with this issue, and that it MAY just be coincidental.

Actually now that I think of it, it only started happening after about 2 full battery cycles. A poster on that thread said it only happens when the computer is warm, maybe I was predestined? :D

Thanks everyone :D

I have my genius bar appt in about an hour, I'll let you all know what happens. Again, thanks for all the responses so far.

Yeah you're a bit screwed. You can try going to the Apple store and hope to get lucky like I did. I got a really nice genius that empathized with my pain since my buddy dropped my MBP a week after I got it. I ended up getting free repairs.

Genius can't hear the clicking noise, but $610 to replace the LCD lid. We'll see what happens

Yeah I guess I did! I'm either just gonna deal with the clicking or try the fix on apples support forums.

Update:

I'm not hearing the clicking noises anymore for whatever reason. Maybe when the genius at the store opened up the computer he tightened some things up, or maybe its because the case I just bought it masking it. I think I'm just going to live with the scraches, considering that i dont even see them anymore :)

Why dont you try the AMEX warranty service (especially at the $610 price point)? I've used it in the past and the process is rather painless. You contact them, open a claim, get it repaired at Apple and pay for it, submit your documents for a reimbursement. It is included in their services, anyways.
