Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has released a free software update that enables owners of properly equipped 2013-2015 Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles to add Siri Eyes Free capability to the Uconnect 8.4 system.

The new software update is available in nearly 2 million vehicles equipped with a Uconnect 8.4 touchscreen system:

- 2013-2015 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500
- 2013-2015 Dodge Viper
- 2014-2015 Dodge Durango
- 2015 Dodge Challenger and Charger
- 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee
- 2015 Jeep Renegade
- 2015 Chrysler 200 and 300

Siri Eyes Free is also supported on 2016 Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and Fiat vehicles with properly equipped Uconnect 8.4 or 6.5 systems. FCA previously announced that Uconnect will support CarPlay in compatible 2016 vehicles later this year.

After entering a 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the Uconnect website, owners of the eligible vehicles can download the update to a USB drive and then install it on their Uconnect system, a process that takes about 30-45 minutes.

Siri Eyes Free, compatible with iPhone 4s or later, is designed to help minimize driver distraction by using Siri voice recognition and spoken responses to allow drivers to interact with an iPhone without needing to look at the in-dash screen.

Drivers can activate Siri Eyes Free by pushing and holding the voice recognition button on the steering wheel to, for example, place phone calls, send text messages, play music, set reminders, set calendar entries, access turn-by-turn directions, and more, while keeping their eyes on the road ahead.

Ford also equipped nearly five million 2011 and newer vehicles with Siri Eyes Free with a SYNC software update in December 2015.

What's more unreliable? Siri's voice recognition or Fiats?

Have you ever used the uconnect 8.4 system? I logged in just to respond to this.

ever day i use uconnect, i am shocked at how poorly Siri works. Uconnect gets the names of people i am dialing every single time. and much faster. and I have not had any false connects yet. and i have strange names i call. gail, annika, matthias.

you should try it before passing judgement on the system it is really quite well done.

I use Siri Eyes Free all the time in my Kia Soul....works as well as can be expected from Siri...but the built in system for dialing etc works very well on its own.

I own a Fiat, and I can honestly tell you its voice recognition is much worse than Siri's. Sometimes I wonder if it would work better if I spoke to it in Italian.

a bit off topic:
i always wish i could dictate my unlock code to get siri to damn start that phone call i asked for!!

so much for no distractions while driving.. but i must say touchID fixes that, i only have an iP5

Wasn't Eyes Free discontinued with the announcement of CarPlay years ago?

No. BMWs first implementation was just last year. I have it on my car - so worthless. Half the things I ask it to do, like launch Pandora or Spotify and it tells me it can't do that while I'm driving. Whaaaaa? It's that the point of Siri Eyes - to do things by voice so I don't have to look take my eyes off the road looking at my phone.

So even with Siri Eyes and BMW apps -- which lets me control certain iOS apps w/ my Nav screen and steering wheel, I have to ask Siri from my phone, not car, and then ask Siri to open Pandora. Not sure if that's BMW or Apple's idea but ridiculous.

Is the Dodge Dart supported? I have the UConnect 8.4 so I assume yes?

Nope, our uConnect 8.4 is a different version that is not adaptable to this.

Haven't heard anything about ANY Dodge Dart models either. That is completely unacceptable considering the Dart has the same system.

The Dart system and pre 2015 Charger's have a different 8.4 uConnect that may look the same but the software is different.

I have this uconnect in my '14 Durango Citadel and my '15 Ram 3500. Will upgrade this weekend and see how it goes. My wife uses the uconnect to text from her Android phone, but it's been lame that I could never with my iPhone.

I have heard the same thing Uconnect is a really good system. However, it is not as widely marketed as CarPlay. I'd like to see Uconnect on other platforms.
