i feel like the edu website probably got a lot of abuse. people picking their old schools and getting cheap software. heck, i'm not going to lie, i'd do it. but now there really isn't that much of an incentive.

i remember when they changed the edu pricing for Leopard and Logic, which is similar to what we see here. someone said that they still offered the cheap pricing at campus stores. if that's true, i think this might be the better way to go. online, with no real way to verify if you actually qualify, offer a slightly reduced price, but in campus stores or maybe even apple stores where you can check school IDs and stuff, maintain the kind of pricing that students can actually afford. it would be easy for people who actually are students to find the reduced price, but slightly more difficult for others (enrolling in a class, acquiring a valid school ID, etc., to much hassle if you're just trying to get the student price).

on a side note, the reduced pricing for the regular version really isn't that impressive considering soundtrack is gone. logic's price reduction was huge, considering what you got. this, not so much. the possibility of using GarageBand as a replacement might not be such a bad idea, provided there is some noise reduction capabilities somewhere in there, in either FCX or GB.

This is awesome news. $199 is a great price -- even though I paid the full $299 only a few months ago.

Anyone who's even slightly serious about video should ditch iMovie and use FCE. Much better control over the video and audio. Multiple video tracks alone is enough reason to use FCE. Sure, there is a bit of a learning curve, but it's well worth it and your local library will have a few books that will help you get started.

This is a great step for aspiring indy film makers and small business owners.

On EDU Pricing

Though apple has one edu price online, at my college computer store the prices are significantly lower than apple edu prices. For instance, I bought leopard for $35

Loss of Soundtrack is no big loss....

In my experience, I'd have to generally agree with this. Soundtrack has never really worked well enough to be a complete "clone" or substitute for a Windows package like ACID Pro. It was supposed to be, I think, but it suffered from performance issues that never made using it as pleasant as something like ACID.

(I remember being excited to get it when it first came out, and tried working with my fairly extensive collection of ACID Loop CDs. Uh, no way... You got these 1-2 second pauses before it would even finish loading and previewing a sound loop, making the whole process feel really "clunky".)

As a result, it seems like Apple has switched the focus of it from being a "great tool for building your own loop-based music" to a "pro tool for making royalty free background music to sync with your movie footage". That's probably a good use for it ... but it's also sort of a "cop out" for Apple, vs. really working on improving the software's handling of industry standard ACID loop sound files and the like.

I'd say, if Final Cut Express does everything you need, then you really should be able to handle all your sound editing and background adding needs with something like Garageband too.

From some apple sales material:

"What happened to Soundtrack?
• Soundtrack is no longer offered. Instead of using Soundtrack, customers can use the
multitrack mixing, soft normalization, and gain controls built into Final Cut Express 4.
• Recommend customers use GarageBand (in iLife ’08) to produce loop-based soundtracks,
while also offering greater music production capabilities. GarageBand offers more features
than Soundtrack. Soundtrack Pro is included with Final Cut Studio."

But they raised the EDU price. $179. Apple is really hosing the students now.

And just like Leopard, many EDU stores will probably sell it for way less than that. Just like you can get the EDU version of Logic Studio for $149 even though apple lists it for $449.

Apple Stores will refund the difference in their Software products for 14 days regardless if package is opened. Does not apply to third party software though.

Man. I have FCE 3.5 sitting in a box that I haven't even opened or installed yet (was waiting on my new intel Mac purchase).

Now, if I upgrade from 3.5 to 4, will I still have Soundtrack (are they separate apps)?

They are separrate apps, however I am not sure if the two are still compatible, but I assume they are.

UK page still not updated, showing FCE 3.5.

My guess is the UK price will end up being £149. Not bad I guess.

Why guess? Apple is aligning its prices. Logic Express =$199 =£129

No reason why FCE should cost a penny more.

You got 16.5GB worth of installables with 3.5HD, this is cut to 1GB with FCE4. Fewer bangs for your buck.

Ditto.

First iWork, now this? I wish Apple still liked it's edu customers... 10% is barely anything!

This is only on their online store though. Head to your campus store and they usually have a larger discount. I got leopard for 89.99 and my sister got her copy and NCSU for 69.99 at her campus store. I also got iWork and iLife for 49.99 at the campus store. I think they are just trying to curb the non edu people from using the edu price on their website.

This new version 4.0 will be very attractive to new users. But I doubt may people with 3.5 will upgrade. There are only a few new features and most people do not need them. I figure I will wait untill finally the day comes when I need to edit mixed SD and HD content. Then I will upgrade to 4.0, 4.1 or whatever Apple is seling then. There is not much here for 3.5 users who shoot with just one format.

But for new users who have found that iMove 08 is not working for them this will be a good thing. This may even have been the reason Apple dumbed down iMove, so they can sell more $199 copies of FCE.

I was only able to get the FCS1 update because of the very cheap Universal Binary update fee. I can't afford to keep buying FCS so I won't be able to edit the new formats unless I move over to FCE4.

It's certainly good value but does FCE4 have clip logging? I can't imagine going back to an editing system where I can't log clips then have them all automatically imported with my log notes. Does anyone know?

I have been waiting for FCE HD 4 before making the move. And the price reduction is great. However, the lack of Soundtrack is disheartening. I almost want to find a cheap copy of 3.5 and then pay the upgrade so as to get it, but maybe it really is the same as Garageband. Anyway, I'll probably still be using a lot of recorded music rather than mixing my own.

Unfortunately, I reside at a seminary with less than two hundred students, and there's no way our bookstore will ever start selling software (Mac or otherwise).

Is there any way of calling Apple to do a special order?

Final Cut Express seems to be priced similar to Logic Express-both are $199.

The loss of Soundtrack is suprising-although, of course you could use Garageband or Logic to create music for your project.

17 days ago I purchased a new iMac with FCE 3.5 from the online store. It was not delivered until last Tuesday. I am not writing to complain about the decrease in purchase price because I realize that them's the breaks with technology. However, is there any way that I can get a free upgrade to 4.0?

I'm not too surprised about Soundtrack. Once they shipped Soundtrack Pro, the original Soundtrack was basically killed off. Now that GB and FCE itself probably do all that and more, I can see why they'd want to stop supporting a dead app.
