I admit, I'm not a video editor, but I don't see the iPad running as powerful as FCP X. I just don't see the iPad Pro having the CPU/GPU horsepower, the RAM, nor the storage to handle what the Mac version does. I imagine getting the footage onto the iPad would be rough as well. iCloud is limited to 2 TB, and wifi is probably too slow to access 4K footage in a reasonable time. I could see the iPad Pro as an ancillary device to a Mac, but not a full-time editor by itself. Like I said, I'm not a video editor, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Probably not fully fledged version with all the whistles and bells of Mac version but surely something more useful then iMovie app they can?

One word. LumaFusion. If they can make a great app so can Apple. It even color grades now. Oh and the iPad Pro has plenty of power. If I can edit final cut footage on a 12 inch MacBook, I should be able to on my iPad Pro

Okay, thanks. Out of curiosity, how would you go about importing, storing & exporting the footage? 4K files seem pretty big.

Fastest way to import is through the camera kit. Yes 4K is huge but a 256gb or higher iPad should do the trick. You can also import and export footage to and from all the cloud services. They just updated today to allow HEVC compression. They are serious about this app.

I would like to see a FCP-X for an iPad as well. I have been watching some tutorials on a product called LumaFusion and it looks like a viable product (obviously not in the class of a desktop video editor).

It’s better than iMovie, not as good as final cut but it gets better every update.

So much whining in this thread (and not only)! If you don't like it, don't use it, keep whining about it and/or using it just makes you look ridiculous.

Good additions and fantastic value for money.

When will apple charge you again? Fcpx XI - are we now revisiting Roman numerals or a last hurrah to Mac OS X nomlecture

If you do not know the current state of the iMacs, I suggest you actually look things up. What diegov12 is claming is correct. The 2017 iMacs have user replaceable CPU, RAM, and storage. Both 21.5" and 27" types. I actually own a 21.5" iMac that I've personally upgraded the RAM from 8GB to 32GB, and storage from 1TB HDD to 4TB SSD after purchase.

there's a HUGE difference between upgrading the RAM, HD, and such on an older mac like the tower Mac Pro, and literally prying apart a glued assembly to get access to those components like on a 21.5" imac. Thats like saying, "yes, of course the engine on a Mini Cooper is servicable" - yes its technically true but it is a huge, massive pain to do so, just like doing any kind of work on a 21" imac.

I can vouch for this big time. Pain is right.

I was responding to the claim that the components in question were soldered, and thus not serviceable even after prying the screen apart. This was true two years ago, but no longer true in current models. I agree that the prying apart is a PITA, but I wasn’t arguing about that.

Ah, fair enough, my bad. What a crazy surprise they've actually made a Mac model that's MORE upgradable. Are we in the upside-down??

I had to edit a video with FCPX 10.3 yesterday. Last time I used it was 2-3 years ago with the old interface, and GOSH was it simpler back in the days! I *love* all the new features, but why did they all become so hard and unintuitive to use?

I hope 10.4 is going to dumb things down a bit...

I am hoping that actually FCPX is split into two apps, a "lite" and a "studio" version, not everyone needs the VR/360 and all that, I agree the interface is a bit unintuitive, I keep thinking, the function should be here..it is not..somewhere else...

I loved that in FCP classic you could drag buttons and make you own interface in a way...now this new 10.3 version is a bit silly...

That's why I stopped using everything Adobe from the day they announced that BS. I'm using FCPX for video editing, motion and some other smaller tools for animation, for illustration I'm using Affinity Designer, for image retouching Affinity Photo, I've been free of anything Adobe and couldn't be happier.

Did the same and agree...even with AVID products...

Ugh...I think the versions you are talking about is iMovie (lite) and FCPX (Studio). Apple will not make a "lite" version for FCPX. That is why iMovie is around. They purposely will not put features in imovie that are main in FCPX because they want you to upgrade and pay for a better version, just like GarageBand and Logic Pro X.

imovie will work for those who do not need any advance stuff.

I really wish they would release some sort of mobile version of FCPX for the iPad. I know there is iMovie and that does quite a bit but I want something a little more like Final Cut. I don't think this is not possible considering the power of the iPad Pros these days and even the later model iPhones.

Will finally download DaVinci Resolve tomorrow. I am curious what it can do in terms of color grading and color correction. But I'm open to a new FCPX as well. Bring it on, Apple!

It may be too late for Apple to regain prominence, I know a lot of people in the industry who bailed to Adobe Premiere in the last 2 years. Our company just moved about 40 FCP seats to Premiere this year. Unfortunately the botched Final Cut X rollout created sticky negative preconceptions about the product that persisted long after Apple fixed and improved much of it.
I was the CD of a comedy theater when they made the switch to FCPX. We wanted to buy another FCP 7 license, since we had 5 suites already and wanted to add one that would work with the current server setup. But they wouldn’t let us buy one. They cutoff sales of the old version and would only sell X, which didn’t have support for servers and all sorts of other pro features. So we were literally forced to switch to Adobe Premiere.

They f-ed up the roll out of FCP X so badly, it should be written up in business school textbooks as a cautionary tale for all-time. All they had to do was release the new program as “FCP X Express”, a stand-alone “light” version of the program that individual users could buy, try, learn and play with for small, individual projects while Apple was working to finish the full, pro version in the background. Then, once that was done, they could release it alongside FCP 7 with training tools and programs to help migrate small companies and editing houses to the new design and workflow.

FCP X is actually a great program. With a modern, next gen user interface that’s faster to edit with once you learn it. But so many people will never get to that point because of the crappy way they handled the rollout. Apple is doing a lot to become more open, transparent, and communicative with pro editors, and I hope that their efforts succeed in bringing people back into the fold. Because the more more that use FCPX, the bigger the community will be, meaning better plugins, support and development.

In the long run, it won't matter. FCPX is more for a new generation of editor.
Agreed. It’s a great, next gen interface that keeps getting better. Can’t wait for 10.4 so we can start editing files over 4K!

FCPX Express for iPad would be a dream!
