Well, speaking as a professional editor, Final Cut is falling behind extremely quickly at this point. FCP 7 was a minimal update and the reality is we're working with a tool that is nearly 5 years old in an industry that changes as rapidly as any other technology-driven industry. The current state of Final Cut is fast-approaching the point of obsolescence and when you compare it to the latest version of Avid or Premiere Pro CS5 the only logical thing to do is start wondering if/when you're going to have to make a switch if there isn't a major update to the FCP suite. I'm sure there are many people out there who can and will make due with FCP as is for some time to come, but for those of us working at the professional level it's unrealistic to continue relying on a tool that is becoming more outdated every day with no idea (save some vague promisees of "awesome"-ness) if or when it will be given the treatment it needs to, at this point, just catch up with its competitors let alone be cutting-edge. I've already made the decision that if there is no announcement of a major FCS overhaul by NAB 2011 my company will be switching to Premiere Pro by the end of 2011. I wish it could be Avid but it's just cost-prohibitive for us right now.
