Uhh.. OP failed. If this was another site I'd say a few more things about him. The brightness is higher on the iPod touch and the iPhone's screen is closer since it's thicker, which plays into the amount of lighting available and reflecting off each device.

No, no, you must be wrong. Look how awful this screen looks at a viewing angle all of 20 degrees from horizontal!

Oh for gods sake people. How long are you all going to talk about this? It's probably not going to be as good as the screen on IP4, but you're also paying 400 bucks less for it and I'm sure the screen will be just fine for games, movies, surfing the net etc.

Deal with it.

I can't tell if you're being serious or not. D:

Let me close the sarcasm tag here.

I do have a 32GB model on order, and as a person who has 2 TN displays at home and 2 TN displays at work and happy with them, I don't give a gosh darn myself.

Have you ever used an IPS display side-by-side with a TN? It's one of those things that you don't miss until you use it (kinda like the retina display itself). I can't stand the colors on a TN display. Though it's not a huge deal on a mobile device.

I would almost prefer the TN display on the iphone. That way peeking eyes can't see. And who uses the phone or touch for that matter at off viewing angles?

Sure, we have 2 iPads at work and one of the newest iMacs with the IPS displays. I have a co-worker with an iP4. They're pretty and obviously they have somewhat wider viewing angles, but as far as color reproduction goes, I don't actually see a huge difference with modern TN displays. And speaking for the 99.9%+ of people who never have color-calibrated an LCD, almost no one will actually care.

And I think it's really going to be a call for people when they actually get them or look at them themselves. For that one engadget video, there are several pictures showing the off-axis appearance is quite good. Displays have always been hard to photograph or take videos of, and I refuse to place much stock in the output from rushed hands-on events except to note that even there, a number of photographers actually got some pretty good-looking wide viewing angle shots. It's also pretty obvious that at least some of the Touches at that event had the brightness cranked up way too high. Even very good displays will start to look quite bad (and getting worse off axis) if you crank up the brightness.

And if I get shipped some unusable morass of a Touch from Apple, I'll return it, even if I have to eat $30 in restocking charges for my horrible error. The horror, the horror. Speaking as someone who still uses a $500 17" TN display he bought in 2004, I doubt that will happen though.

Apple is simply cheating. If you remember previous iPod touch generations, they were all identical to iPhones back then, except for GSM and camera of course. Their prices was the same or very similar as iPod touch 4gen. Price difference to iPhones was similar to. Yet they were able to got all specs same as iPhone, same screen etc. Now with touch 4gen, for whatever reason they started to differentiate these two devices even more, by putting inferior parts in iPods.

And if you look at your iPod at such extreme angles I have no pitty for you. The fact is that the iPod Touch costs $229 and the iPhone 4 is $599, expect differences.

You're really starting to annoy me. The 1st gen iPhone and 1st gen Touch were VERY different. No speaker, no volume rocker, no microphone, no bluetooth. Huge difference. Your argument is blown. Plus there is a $400 price difference. So quit with your BS reasoning, its getting old.

The photos in the OP prove absolutely nothing. Fail. If you overexpose the iPhone 4 screen it will look bad as well.

The screen looks ok to me. OF course id have to see it in the flesh but from the specs that Steve showed at the press conference it should be a massive leap over the outgoing touch. Is it as good as iPhone standards? Maybe, maybe not, but even if it isn't its certainly a huge step up.

Whats more of interest to me is how well that still camera performs :)

You gotta be kidding me. I really don't care if I annoy you it's your problem not mine. Price difference was always very similar, so it's not like it's started to be 400$ for 2010. Things you mentioned are not "huge difference" to me, they're mostly important in phones so I don't care. Screen was always the same till now, which is a real huge difference. Same with now implementing a camera module to the iPod touch, which is inferior as well.

So in your genius mind, what should separate the $600 iPhone from the $229 iPod Touch, besides the GSM module? I'm dying to read this.

That simply isn't true.

Also do note that even the same generation iPod Touches had different screens with different color temperature and slightly different black level. I've had them both.

Then buy an iPhone 4. Or a 5MP point and shooter, or whatever the heck works for you that the Touch doesn't have. Please.

Oh, and the original Touch also didn't come with some of the original iPhone apps either (e-mail, stocks, calendar?) They were what, $20 a few months later? Really, the two were not the same at all out of the gate. I remember that pretty distinctly because it was one of three generations of the Touch I passed on buying!

Oh for crying out loud. the IP4's screen is only worth like 40 bucks. i'll put together my own damn iphone 4 for 180 bucks before i blow 700 dollars on an unsubsidized rip off. but i will never go back to ATT ever. at least i cheated them out of their ETF after only 6 months of dropped calls every 3 seconds.

just buy the iphone 4 screen and dice it out of there and duct tape it into your dang IPTouch. wham bam.

TFT or IPS nobody cares anyhow.

anything not ATT FTW!

I'm more concerned about the CPU, GPU, and RAM the new iPod Touch 4G is packing than the screen (nothing that has been confirmed, sure Steve Jobs can say what he wants but I want hard tech specs). iOS4 and iPod Touch 2G was a nightmare, I had to jailbreak back to 3.1.2.

Right, because paying $600 for a Dell Streak or $550 for a Nexus One with 4GB of storage is a much better deal. Cell phones are expensive, especially smartphones. Whats new?

I don't see what's wrong with this picture. I like the look of the iPod Touch. It's a great improvement from the previous generations. I look forward to getting my hands on the new iPod Touch to determine if I will buy it.

I have iPod touch 2gen with iOS 4.02. Works fine for me. As for the 4gen, I hope it's gonna have 512 of ram, but it's yet to be confirmed.

I posted that picture tongue-in-cheek as a response to claims that the screen looked awful, when, in fact, some people at the hands on after the keynote photographed it and it looks excellent.

Ask Apple, that was their strategy for the last 3 years to make ppl pay a few hundred bucks more for added phone functionality and camera module. iPod touch 3rd gen and iPhone 3GS were the best example of this policy. Same screen, same parts (well 3GS had a little better speaker), and 200-400$ price difference (depending on the capacity) for just a GSM module and a camera.
