What is this? Not only does it look unattractive, but the RAM used are previous generation speeds, there is no USB 3.0, and the native resolution is too small for my needs. The only thing incredible about this machine is sporting a full size desktop GTX 680.

Usb 3 is there,it came with Ivy.

talk about completely missing the point of ALL-IN-ONE. Who doesnt know you can build a very powerful desktop for much cheaper?

the point here is there is now finally a true AIO using desktop hardware that is not 2x, or 3x or 4x but many many times more powerful than any new iMac that will eventually coming out, yet with a cheaper price. While still being a real AIO clean setup with no extra wires etc...

The aesthetic obviously isnt as slick as the iMac, few products can ever match apple's look. But i wouldnt call it ugly, it's just a regular looking AIO.

It's what they managed to fit under the hood, that's truly revolutionary and finally providing us gamers who desires a clean setup with a very nice alternative to the iMac monopoly.

man you guys all seem to not understand the difference between an AIO vs a desktop.

just fail...

Got some stats on your quote of "many many more times faster"?

As much as I appreciate the attempt at cramming great hw into an AIO package. I agree that it is too fugly to consider. Id rather buy a small case and cram all those components and buy a nicer screen.

But like I said I appreciate the attempt and encourage other companies to follow suit to keep apple on their toes.

The thing you're missing is that a lot of us DO care if it runs OS X.

My iMac is my main workstation doing 3D and graphic work, it's nice to be able to run in Parallels or Boot Camp but my first priority is being able to run OS X, not Windows.

I've got thousands of dollars in software that runs on the Mac, not the PC, so making a PC my main computer simply isn't an option. I get that if you're a gamer and want a fast GPU that a Mac isn't the best choice, but unless an AIO is running OS X (preferably legally for me) it just won't work for a lot of iMac users.

Your kind of thinking is killing you as Apple has a full grip on you. Do yourself a favor install windows 7 via bootcamp and find a substitute program or two. I am not anti apple or pro windows. I am just saying use both look for substitutions maybe linux as an osx. Whatever. The reason is very simple both mac and windows have a different agenda then they did a few years ago. You need to diversify if you can.

it's obvious, desktop gtx 6800 + 2x raid0 ssd vs imac 6970M + old toshiba ssd. You can argue about the look, but in term of hardware it's not even close when playing games at max setting.

Who needs a RAID 0 set up for games, unless you're the type who enjoys spending money for no good reason? People have been playing games off platter hard drives for years and lots still do.

If you've got a nice substitute for Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, and After Effects, or if you'd like to give me $2k for another set of licenses I'd be willing to consider switching. Otherwise I don't see myself moving to Windows anytime soon :)

I use a PC at work and I can comfortably work on either PC or Mac needed, but I don't have the budget to have two sets of licenses simply to be crossplatform.

If Apple does move towards strictly laptop/mobile solutions then I'll have to re-evaluate which platform I choose, but till then I'll be replacing my Mac with another Mac and using primarily OS X (though I most likely will install Bootcamp or Parallels on my next machine).

Personally I don't own an iMac because it's an all in one, I own one because of the great components (including OSX) that gel together almost flawlessly to create a system that's really great to produce things with! This could never replace that!

I also don't particularly use my iMac for gaming, if I wanted a hardcore PC gaming machine, I wouldn't choose any kind of all in one as it's just not what they're suited to.

1) That thing is UGLY. Any reasons for having an all-in-one go out the window when I look at the desgin of that.

2) Only a 1080p display? Weak. Not to mention it makes the GTX 680 absolutely overkill.

3) As others have said way too expensive. Just built a rather good gaming PC and bought a 1900 x 1200 monitor to go with it, and I've still got $1,000 to spare on your model. Even if I returned my video card and bought a 680, I'd still be several hundred dollars up. Add a wireless mouse and keyboard, and my setup would look just as "clean" as yours.

So yeah. Thanks but no thanks.

I didn't say a word about the looks. I'm still wondering where the stats are. I mean, sure, I bet it's faster, but by how much? Believe me, I'm a proponent of building a rig for gaming. I'm not arguing against this machine, although it's definitely not for me.

It looks so beautifully chunky. Look at all of that fat around the side, and the plastic 0-o. Probably will creak and groan in your fingers deliciously like toast.

Strong graphics is a plus though.

We could all talk in circles about this I'm sure, but with regards to the iMac, I know a professional home staging company that bring in iMacs, so that speaks to the appeal and aesthetics...nothing, IMO, compares.

Personally, I have an iMac on my "fancy" desk in my main floor den and I have a HUGE aluminum Dell XPS in my mechanical room that I tinker with and upgrade piece by piece (dual GPU, etc). The XPS runs my ripping, encoding, gaming sw (not that iMac can't fill that role) and I use them both for different purposes - but ask me which I give up if I could only keep one and I would ditch the clunker in a nanosecond (obviously, right?). I like the principle that you design from the outside in, at risk of over simplifying; build a beautiful case and let the rest be engineered to fit in it.

here ya go.. lol :D ;)

Here's the custom spec i am looking at for $2750, it can be configured for much cheaper if you dont pick all top end hardware.

Nearly $3 grand!? You could build a MONSTER machine for that kind of money. Hell, you could build a very bad-ass machine for half that. And what about thermals? PSU? Is that screen actually any good? Built-in speakers? Is it made of cheap plastic? Warranty/support? Let's see the details. Specs are only half of the story. Are you sure you're not spamming/advertising?

Good lord, that's a 300W GPU, when running flat out. Wouldn't expect a long life expectancy with it.

But hey, kudos to them for trying.

Maingear Alpha is the ugliest AIO I´ve ever seen. Both front and sides looks completely crap. I would rather have a ugly big tower under my desk and a sexy monitor than this piece of bugliness....with this the whole point of an AIO kinda disappear.

wow, the front is ugly, but once I saw the sides and I/O ports I nearly got vomit in my mouth, that sure looks horrible! seems as if it came from a 80´s company which dont care about design...that´s quite an achievement for todays standards. HP and dell´s AIO suddenly looks like state of the art after seeing this.

Looks like Maingear agree seeing as they've revamped their AIO offering with the 'Solo'. It's a big improvement if you ask me.

I agree, much better.I dont understand the design of the foot though :D Why make it have the cut-in, only so it doesnt resemble the imac, but instead it looks corny. Oh well, at least its better.
