First off I am and apple fan through and through. Love gadgets to the extreme! Very excited when the 4 came out and waited over 8 hours in line with a pre order in place. However (you guessed it) the signal issue is driving me crazy!! My daughter took over my 3gs Jailbroken phone and raves about no drop calls or signal loss when most of the time I get nothing.

Yesterday was the last straw. We were eating out and my daughter wanted me to see this website. Her 3gs had full bars....My 4g had 1 to no service at times. I have an apple bumper in place, but this is crazy!! She was surfing without any trouble and my phone kept saying unable to open site. NICE!!

So about to get ready and take back my iphone and buy my daughter another 3gs so I can take over my old Jailbroken 3gs phone.

I look forward to having my jailbreak back once more...

You said the problem is the signal issue? Even with the bumper? And even if you're not 'holding it wrong'? Sounds like you have a defective iPhone and not because of signal issue when you're 'holding it wrong'? :confused:Can you get it replace and try going to that place again and see what happens? If you're saying that you're getting the signal issue because you're 'holding it wrong' then I don't blame you for returning it.

Not trying to give you a hard time 'cause I do feel sorry for you and yes I'm mad  at Apple also for the way they are handling this issue but yours sounds like it's a different issue.

Cool story bro.

All you people defending the phone like it's your kid are ridiculous. I have the problem too, but not to your extent so I won't return. It boggles my mind that Apple would release a product that has such a substandard design.

Was prob a fluke. Turn airplane mode on and off real quick would have fixed it. But thank you for sharing this story.

Thanks for this. I am a huge :apple: Fanboi. Got 3 Macs, 4 iPhones, iPad, 2 AP Extreme, Express and even have :apple: stickers on both cars. This phone just has too many problems and I'm confident :apple: will find fixes, but I can't take the chance on getting stuck after my return window runs out if they don't. :apple: has always taken very good care of me with fixes and warranty repairs, even fixing one of my computers out of warranty, but this phone is just not there.

The minute these issues get fixed or a new version comes out, I'm in line. Pretending there's no real issues just because you live next door to a cell tower and you don't mind putting a cover on your phone is great, but don't put folks down who have real issues.

people are just sharing their experiences, what's wrong with that? no need to be an ass. i have to say that's the one thing i miss about the android forums. people were actually nice over there. i love the iphone 4 but my forum experience so far makes me feel like i'm back in middle school
Middle School. Agreed. Only less mature.

You should have it replaced, my 4 has better reception and faster speed than my old 3gs and my coworkers current 3gs's in all areas.

Before you take it back, do a factory restore and .... here it comes..... this is important...... dont ignore this part coming up here.... dont be mad if I yelll!!!!

Set up as a new phone!!!!! Dont restore from backup!!!!!!!

That is probably your issue....... OK

Thanks
Peace
:):apple:
This is good advice. Try setting it up as a new phone - it's likely your backup brought some faulty information or settings from the last phone. A definite must-try before you return.

I truly feel bad for you OP, but you have to know these threads never end well.

I can say though that your phone sounds like its flat out defective. It sounds completely different than the antenna detuning issue.

Apple said there shouldn't be an issue with a Bumper. Contact Apple and see what they say.The phone might be messed up.

lol at ppl telling trying to get him to keep the Iphone 4. He's being smart and knows that a better one will come out next year. Only fools will get themselves stuck with a broken product for 2 years. You same ppl will think Apple owes you a new phone when they release a better one.

With all these returned iphone 4's, are they re-wrapping them up and reselling them to the public or are they sending them back to apple to look at it?

There definitely had to be something wrong with that phone. I've never witnessed what you describe unless putting the phone into a death grip (which isn't even easy to do everywhere). If you were using a bumper and saw this issue I'd say the phone had a real problem.

Huh? What difference would that make?

I returned mine yesterday as well. Got questioned so much by employees. It's like they can't believe anyone would want to return their sacred apple's product.

But regardless, I returned mine because I had problems. But more importantly I want the white one lol

If you're having that many issues then i'd return it too. Odd though, how people seem to have completely different experiences with the same hardware. I've had no issues with reception at all. I could duplicate the signal issue in areas of low signal if i wanted but it never affected my "real-world" use of the phone. and now with a bumper on my reception on this phone overall is better than the reception i had on the 3G (in some cases significantly). Add in everything else (great camera, HD vid, retina screen, higher upload speeds, OS/multitasking)...and this phone for me is as close to perfect as it gets.

Well, except for the proximity sensor issue. Apple...FIX IT! (and if they do, then perfection may potentially be achieved)

I sent mine back on Monday and back to using my 3gs now. Even though it is slower, it is nice to have a phone that works again. I was fed up with all the problems of the iP4 and apple basically said screw you if your having problems.
I just got off the phone with ATT, making sure my contract and upgrade eligibility was updated. She said they have been getting a lot of calls just like mine.

I set my iP4 up as NEW, not restore from backup and had tons of problems. Comparing the speeds to my 3gs, with both phones sitting in the same location on my desk on 3G. The iP4 had faster download speeds, but slower upload speed. If I picked up either phone and just laid it in my hand (not gripping it, or touching the sides), the iP4 speeds would drop to almost nothing while the 3gs never changes.

If you have a iP4 that is working, that's great! I wish mine worked the way it should have. It is a great gadget, but failed miserably as a phone.
I just was not comfortable with the idea of having a phone with major problems and getting stuck in another 2 year contract and having to use it for at least a year before I could upgrade to something that works.
I think there are a lot of people in the same situation. We are getting at the end of the 30 day period. Apple hasn't gave us any updates that fixed anything yet. The update they did roll out was to display the correct amount of bars, which they've had wrong all these years!

forgot to add

I forgot to add the point about my apple store return.

The app store employee, VERY nice had to call AT&T to do the re-activate of the older phone with a new SIM and to de-activate the iphone 4, return, etc. She used the iphone 4 to make the call to AT&T, and the call dropped two times while on the phone, IN the store, etc. Pretty ironic.

Ah well, it'll get fixed and working perfectly, of that I have no doubt. Then, I'll re-enter.

so i tried to return my iphone today, i know i couldnt return a web order to the apple store (brick) but i wanted to try a new phone to see if there was going to be a unit out there that doesnt have the dreaded antenna issue!

well spoke to a nice women on the counter, i asked firstly...

is there a software fix for the antenna issue, she says no. im like great lol well (went on to explain my problem with dropping the calls) and how i wanted a replacement unit. She said she would have to do a factory restore on my old phone and check to see if it fixed the issues.

i told her it wouldnt and she said its protocol and would take 30 mins, im like umm no just get the replacement phone out and let me check to see if it has issues like my handset! got a big fat NO so i said well if i take the new handset and it has more problems with it, i.e screen or proximity blah blah, could i have my old handset back? again was told NO.

said i want a refund she said u cant bring it here as its an online store phone, its like trying to return a item from one company to a totaly differnt company.. well how is it i can get a new handset from this totally differnt apple company store? total bullshiz. i walked out with the same phone as i supose i can bare it ughhhhh...

I would not settle for that. You need to call apple and return it. Don't be passive when it comes to such an expensive item
