Light leak

How can one be sure if they have a "light leak" on their iPhone 3G? Maybe i haven't searched thoroughly.

So...is it safe to say that the 1st gen iPhone is the better phone as far as how it is bulit? Anybody EVER have any problems with those phones?

This will help in my decision to which one i will get. I want to get a white 3G but not if there are all kinds of problems with things and the caseing is cheap and cracks too easily.
I am not going to buy mine at a Apple store because i dont have nor do i want AT&T. So it will be ebay or Craigslist.

The first Gen iPhones are SOLID. They feel higher quality to me. The aluminum is a really nice touch and it feels like you could chuck it across the room without worry.

However, there are some things to consider about the older iPhone. The cell and Wifi receptions aren't as strong, you'll loose a couple of bars easily. In a place where I used to get NO SERVICE, I now get 2 bars... so yeah. Also, GPS is really useful for driving directions and 3G is supposed to be twice as fast as Edge (although I have yet to try it because we don't have 3G around here until next month).

I would think about those things.

im still confused how he states

1) complains he had to pay 500 for early upgraders fee
2) loved his first gen iphone
3) says he has no 3 g coverage

makes me wonder why did you get a 3g? no really, im quite curious

1.) I accept the price. I just think it's weird that I had to spend $500 on a 1st Gen iPhone and then they increase the price by $200 because I wanna spend more money. Oh well, it's not the end of the world.

2.) I loved the hardware build of the 1st Gen (meaning the solidness and the overall quality, but I didn't love the horrible cell and wifi signals and I wanted GPS).

3.) We're supposed to be getting 3G in my area next month, so my purchase does have meaning. It's not too much longer to wait. I know for a fact I would be unhappy owning a 1st Gen iPhone in a month knowing that there's 3G everywhere that I cannot use... hehe.

Nope. There are millions (and I do mean millions) of happy iPhone 3G owners.

It's true, they all e-mail him weekly and tell him this. There is no way this information could be wrong.

I sympathize with the OP. It took me 3 phones to get a good one as well so I can understand the frustration.

All you people are free to make fun of people that demand quality from their products, but I feel it's you people who don't is why people like me and the OP do.

Accepting crap is why these things are made cheap in Chinese factories and the QC is junk. Apple (and other companies) know they can get away with producing less than perfect products because someone will always be so wet in the pants they even have an iPhone, that they'll accept anything.

To some people, money doesn't come all that easy, and I can accept that when you pay $500+ for a phone, you expect it to work and be put together correctly. There is nothing wrong with demanding quality when you pay large amounts of money.

OP, I'm glad you found a good phone. I'm starting to get a little happier now that mine is working, so I hope nothing else goes wrong (cracks and such).

Correct. People lower their standards to trick themselves into being perfectly happy with a defective iPhone. I know because I *tried* doing this to myself a few times, but each time it did not work. I would tell myself.. "It's only a phone, try not to think about it" -- That didn't work. Then I'd be like "It's not THAT noticeable, it could be worse" -- That didn't work. Then I tried "Well, there's always the next generation iPhone... if I could just put up with this one until then..." -- That definitely didn't work, but I'm sure for some people it does work. The line of business I am in requires extreme attention to detail and demands perfection. I'm in the printing business and I do the computer setup work (on a PowerMac G5 </plug>) and 10 years of using Macs, plus my job has probably made me this way. I also agree that I am OCD and have obsessive qualities and not everyone is the same as me. If everyone were like me, Apple wouldn't sell very many iPhones. Every iPhone would be refurbished.

TheSpaz is a man after my own heart, or vice versa. I am on iPhone #3. Apple sent me a new phone instead of a refurbished one for #3, while #2 was refurbished. From what I can tell, the latest one is fine except for a sunken volume button and rough plastic edge below the left side of the bezel. I can't decide whether or not to try to get it replaced and risk another refurb.

Yeah GPS is nice on a phone but i already have a Garmin GPS so tho that is a nice feature, i dont really need it unless it works real good...then i can sell my Garmin, i suppose.

The wi-fi in my iPod works pretty good so it shouldnt be weaker in the phone.

You acknowledge that iphones are built cheaply in chinese factories where the QC is junk. Yet you expect the craftsmanship to be perfect. Doesn't seem logical at all.

I am already on 3rd iPhone
1) battery problem (full charge for ~3 hours, no 3g, no internet, no video, only voice calls)
2) battery problem (full charge for ~3 hours, no 3g, no internet, no video, only voice calls)

I am on iPhone 3G number two for the reason above. I had to go through five employees at two stores to get it replaced

I brought them dozens of screenshots from this forum and my own usage results. Turns out I was absoltuely right, my new 3G has accomplished 8 hours usage 39 hours standby ;)

have you seen the movie 300?
the first scene was about holyman of some sort, looking at baby and then he threw away the baby to the death if there is any kind of imprefection. much like what your are looking for in iphone 3G.

you only paid US200 dollar, you did not paid like 5000 dollar for a vertu. you expect perfection?

are you going to throw away your own baby because the baby teeth is misalign? or maybe one eye is slightly misalign.

200 bucks. 200 bucks. what do you want? apple computer should ban you. kick you out of their store.

The iPhone is not a $200 phone. The iPhone 3G 16GB is a $699 phone that they sell SUBSIDIZED for $199 *if* the person is eligible for an upgrade. I upgraded too early so I had to pay $499 for mine. I'm a perfectionist and I wouldn't feel good knowing I have a defective phone that I paid a premium for.

Everyone is OCD in their own way. Some are OCD when it comes to electronics, some are OCD when it comes to cars, etc. It's knowing where to draw the line.

People may say complain about people being OCD about the iphone but then again people are OCD in their own way.

Would you buy a brand new car and accept it if you found a couple of small dings and scratches? I mean, the car performs the same as a brand new car.

Would you go to an expensive steak house, pay $50 for a nice steak, order it rare, have it come out medium-well, and still eat it? I mean, it's still the same steak and flavor.

The next day, I brought my iPhone 3G back to Best Buy to return it because I was not happy with this one. The stupid lady there refused to see anything wrong with it and she said there was nothing she could do except for letting me pay a $50 restocking fee to return it and buy a whole new one... I was going to spend money on a case so I decided to use that money on a new iPhone instead. I figured, if I get one that's better, I'll be happy.

So you ended up spending double on your iPhone. $1000 on something worth $500, you must really care about this.

I'm done.
I'm happy.
Love my new iPhone
Nothing left to discuss.

Thank you all for reading my story!

if you accidentally break it
you have to search for another perfect one.

iphone 3G back is so fragile, some damage sure to come to it

eventually

there are millions of iphone 3G, therefore it is hard to get perfection.

some how i feel iphone is better build than 3G

I completely agree, how much does someone want to bet that the OP finds a problem within 2 weeks?

I've had my issues with the iphone in the past, but something tells me that the OP will constantly check the phone for problems....karma is a bitch and a a slip of the hand brings retribution rather quickly to your "perfect" iphone. Don't get me wrong, I wish the OP no harm and am happy he found something he is satisfied with....but you'll never be certain when a crack will show up, may it be today, tomorrow or months from now. If your OCD dictates you neurotically checking your iphone for defects all the time, you'll be taking time away from the pursuit of happiness (ie chasing tail and whatnot).

Actually, if I damage it myself, I feel better about the damage to my phone. I just want to START OUT with a good iPhone and try to treat it as well as I can. Why should I start out with a bad iPhone? That's like buying an apple with a bite taken out of it and then saying... oh, well I was already going to eat it anyway, so I guess since it already has a bite missing, I won't complain.

The original iPhone was stronger, yes.

So you ended up spending double on your iPhone. $1000 on something worth $500, you must really care about this.

No, the 2nd iPhone I got from Best Buy only costs me $50... I'll admit... I was pretty desperate at that point... I regret that decision now.

I'm all done worrying about it now... that's all in the past.

I'll admit... I was pretty desperate at that point...

Desperate? Aren't there more important things to worry about?

Nope. There are millions (and I do mean millions) of happy iPhone 3G owners. It just seems like many of the whacked out ones come here.

Just take a look at the OPs name. It explains everything...

Dude, he's been here a hell of a lot longer than you have, he was a member here before we even knew of the iPhone, so you can't say that he came here to complain and such about the iPhone. He is hardly "whacked," you pay for quality, in my eyes, anything that costs more than $100 (new) must come in perfect condition, it is just unacceptable for anything less. So anybody has justification to complain about not getting a near-perfect iPhone, all of these issues are more than minor things. A minor thing would be needing to use a little force to plug the USB cable in or something like that, all of his problems are respectable.

What does it matter that he's been here longer? I completely agree with Bryan. It may be that there are some models out there with serious defects, but they are certainly not the norm. Maybe TheSpaz got a bad unit, but I find it hard to believe there were five in a row.

And about that $100 standard of perfection... You're a student (college, I assume). Are each of your classes "perfect?" How about your apartment or home? Even cheap housing is well over $100. Same with a car, TV, computer, etc. And we're not talking fully functional, we're saying it has to be "perfect" in every subtle way. You should think about that a bit.
