I'm sure that there'll be a 128GB option for the J105 ATV5. You have to take into consideration the temporary downloading of a 3+ hour film at 4K HDR HEVC along with the beautiful new 4K HDR Screensavers and 4K HDR games that will appear for it. 128GB is going to seem a minimum with all of that :)

The current AppleTV doesn't [currently] use local storage for movies, only the RAM for a N second buffer (there's no "download" implementation in tvOS). Games and other non-music/movies/TV content, yeah, that is / can be stored locally, I guess it's possible they might have some concern over the existing 64GB max.

The existing ATV 4 (and 3) will download the entire movie while watching it. Try hitting pause and you will see what I mean. I hope they ofter more memory options like on the iPad and open up the file system. On a side note my 64gb ATV is showing 21gb of free storage.

Not that it matters to me because I use a Mac but it would be nice to see DTS HD MA passthrough.

Regardless I'm excited. Even though I COULD watch my 4k Netflix account on my PS4 Pro or Samsung smartTV in 4k HDR10 I usually just stick to the ATV because I prefer its layout and user experience.

Although recently I've been looking to see if its available in 4k HDR10 and then switching to the smart tv apps.

No DTS (HD-MA) support? No thanks. I'll stick with my Nvidia Shield TV.

Has there been any suggestion that it would or would not support DTS and DTS-HD MA passthrough or all just entirely speculation? I'm certainly hoping it does and then I can ditch my media PC and just use Plex via ATV for all my blu-ray rips. That being said if Apple is sticking with Dolby variants and Atmos in iTunes then it would not necessarily have an incentive to do so.

ATV has never supported DTS natively. Apparently you can get DTS with the Infuse app, but I use Plex. I have a local media server and a VPS. For me there's no point in using iTunes due to 1) no media has DTS (HD-MA) audio and 2) iTunes media won't play in Plex. I rip my own BDs, which is fine for me as I can decide what audio tracks I want. It sucks having to do this, but I'd rather have the DTS audio track on specific movies (Star Wars/Guardians/etc). With the settings I use in Handbrake, the vid quality is damn good (files are typically between 3-4GB, including the DTS audio track).

I'm not too optimistic but you never know. As you probably know some movies (although it seems much less so far) are using DTS:X as their object oriented audio codec. So if Apple wanted to embrace object oriented audio movie soundtracks as a whole and not just Atmos maybe it would support DTS now.

I used to use MakeMKV/handbrake to rip and re-encode video and convert to plain DD for ATV3 and ios device compatibility. However with ATV4 supporting native blu-ray h.264 bitrates and having a good sound system to take advantage of HD audio codecs I've just been doing straight blu-ray rips and just selecting the HD audio track. It's obviously easier and less time consuming too. I mostly use Plex but will switch over to my media PC depending on movie to get HD audio or Atmos bitstreaming to my AVR as well as 24FPS support. If using Plex via ATV4 or ios it doesn't take much processing power to transcode the HD audio to AC3. Yes Infuse can passthrough plain DTS and decode HD audio codecs and pass along as LCPM (no Atmos though) but prefer the Plex interface so don't use it much. Takes seconds to switch over to my media PC which is always running plex media player with my harmony remote.

Sounds like ATV5 will have 4K and HDR covered so if can bitstream all HD audio (including Atmos/DTX metadata) and support 24fps I would be in heaven and could use it as my sole box (aside from OTA content via TiVo) but not holding my breath.

4K + HDR + Atmos can definitely command a premium. But I think $299 is slightly to high. An Xbox One S runs $279 and is probably the upper limit of what Apple can charge for "just" a streaming box.

Actually my comment was sarcastic. Apple is clearly playing catch up to the competition here. They not only need to add 4K but they need to hold the cost DOWN or they will lose even more market share imo.

Most tend to use the AppleTV to watch iTunes purchases/rentals, or for using apps in place of a smart TV. Price it too high, and people may not care to buy it and then Apple loses out on selling 4K movies at a higher cost.
Apple loses out on selling 4K movies to people again, because buying Star Wars Episodes 1-7 5 times (VHS, Extended VHS, DVD, iTunes, now iTunes 4K...) at a higher cost.

(Not a FIFY, but an "oh crap... I hope I don't have to buy the movies again" thing)

To the comments about the ATV4 sticking around at a lower price:

It makes a lot of sense, especially for non-4K TV use. I wonder though how they’ll market it since they just refer to them as ‘Apple TV’ and they’ll likely look the same physically.
$99 ATV4 32GB
$149 ATV5 64GB
$199 ATV5 256GB

I think that's a logical lineup & pricing. I'm more curious how they'll handle naming. Though I guess they did have an overlap of the 3rd and 4th gen for a while.

Any chance of upgrading content to 4K for less than purchasing the same content again?

I didn't get into ATV until after HD so I do not know the history there.

I appreciate that but it's very much like any other Apple product. Is the market for smart phones different now than in 2007? Yes, so naturally, the price of iPhone should be substantially lower than it was in 2007, right? How about Macs? How about tablets?

Apple charges what it wants to charge. Ecosystem lock-in is a real thing. If they want $299, they'll get it. Of course, we all would like Apple hardware to be priced at a big discount... or even (the perception of) competitively, but the reality is that Apple can price for it's full profit margin and people line up to pay pretty much any price... and then hop on sites like this one to rationalize and/or defend the Apple pricing to others.

Yes, but how much was ATV 2? $99. It added HD capability.

ATV3? $99
ATV4? $149/$199

No, Apple will not get $299 for ATV5 - unless there is something merging much more than 4K under the hood.

I'll pay $299 for a 4K HDR :apple:TV. I completely grasp the concept that competing products can be had for 10% of that price but I'll use the h*ll out of this next :apple:TV. And if it finally, fully competes with BD boxes in picture & sound, it will be a bargain even at $299 IMO.

Of course, I'll hope right with you to get it at $99... or $49... or $29... or FREE... or Apple pays us to take one. But the reality is that only :apple:TV can play Apple DRM'd content (the great negative of the ecosystem) and certain other features related to other Apple offerings ONLY work with :apple:TV too.

I think they will reduce prices of the ATV4 (until they are off the shelves) and try to saturate the market as a bigger lure to the cable companies to get aboard the ATV train.

I'd love to see apple take on the gaming console industry, but that is probably wishful thinking.

Really? I literally watch ALL of my TV on ATV4. Netflix, Hulu, Football, Baseball - literally everything. I've found it to be a great device. The only thing holding me back from upgrading my TV to a 4K has been the lack of support on the ATV.

curious, do you have like a Football/Baseball season pass thing or do you use another source for watching live games?

AppleTV & AppleTV-Pro

I don't know if they'd want to market it as "Pro." When they're aiming at the living room and general TV watchers, I don't know if I'd label that the professional market. I think they just called it ATV5.

I use a borrowed cable login to watch the Yankees on the Fox Sports Go app. For football, I use the same login for the ESPN app for college. I watch the fox games on the FSGO app and I bought CBS all access for the NFL season for the games broadcast there.

Looks like the marketing name might be Apple TV 4K, and that we're getting an updated remote that has haptic feedback. Wonder if the design of it will change significantly.

I myself have only Apple TV as my source for any content on my TVs. For sports I subscribe to MLB, MLS, and DAZN (NFL Gamepass and a bunch of european soccer).

I have 8 TV's and 8 Apple TV 4's.

Do your two wives and sets of kids know about each other? ;)

On a more serious note, do you find your OOMA to be reliable? My mom has one and it has some sort of problem at least once every couple of months.
