I'm sorry but I HATE the flat design junk everyone's so happy about these days.
I cannot recall a single element that "flat" improves, besides a text page.
To me, it's like switching from live-action movies to cartoons. I like cartoons (old geek), but not all the time. The skeumorphism is there, just in anime form. It's a step backwards, in my opinion. Pixar, stop making 3D animated films. Make flat, 2D ones from now on. No more realistic Call of Duty or God of War, sorry. The photos of your family will be replaced with the caricature version that can be had from theme park booths.
From my point of view, the moment that "skeumorphism" became a bad word in the tech world is the moment the tech world lost it's mind. Guess what folks, many of us live in the real world. We interact with real things. So buttons, switches, and "3-d", realistic icons make sense, even in the virtual space. I believe it's what makes iOS so damn intuitive: the item behaves like stuff in the physical world, no translation required. A Mustang GT from the 60's (Eleanor) is just as beautiful in person than behind a pane of glass. To me, all this flat junk is like taking my beautiful desktop background and replacing it with with a Saturday-morning-tv-comic-book version.
So hey, maybe leather-bound stitching was not to everyone's liking. There's a proper application of skeumorphism and there may not be.There's good design and bad design (green felt).
But to take iOS and turn everything in it into a cartoon seems insane to me.
