Oh ya, they're out to save the environment while trying the best they can to stop you from repairing your device so that you have to buy a new one. I wanted to repair my left airpod pro and the cost was higher than a new pair. Their only alligiance is to shareholders and if talking about the environment helps them sell products, they sure as hell will do it.

And how is the EU forcing apple to move to usb-c the worst decising for the environment? Everything else is on usb-c and it limits the number of different cables people need to buy for their electronics.
It's only bad if you completely ignore the long-term benefits.

Stop selling them Apple— these are hurting your brand.

Exactly this. It's mind-blowing why they made it to release in the first place, never mind continuing to sell them.

These should have been pulled after the first week and some replacements rushed through.

Forcing Apple to move to USB-C is the worst decision for the environment because now there will be MILLIONS of Lightning cables thrown into landfills (and of course, our oceans).

Oh, another finewoven case hate thread that will reach 15 pages and not a single photo of poster's cases after 6 months.

Someone will post the popular-on-the-forums detail photo of the Apple logo on the back of the case that has very obviously had the "clarity" slider pushed up to 100 to exaggerate the texture. It's right next to a full photo supposedly of the same case, and you can see differences in color and texture between the two images. One glance and you can see the photo as presented is deceptive.

EDIT: As predicted, here it is. Anyone can look at the detail photo and see that some obvious changes have been made from the version at left, in order to make a point that might not otherwise have been made.

The cost of leather:

Beef produces the most greenhouse gas emissions, which include methane. A global average of 110lb (50kg) of greenhouse gases is released per 3.5oz of protein.

Beef requires 20 times more land and emits 20 times more GHG emissions per gram of edible protein than common plant proteins, such as beans.

Raising animals for food takes up half of all water used in the U.S. An estimated 1,800 gallons of water go into a single pound of beef

Methane, a greenhouse gas, has over 25 times the impact on our planet as carbon dioxide over a 100-year period. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, the largest contributor of methane in the US is livestock and their waste.

Livestock contributes nearly 2/3 of agriculture's greenhouse & 78% of its methane emissions.

Animal agriculture takes up land and is a leading cause of deforestation. In 2018, 30 million acres of tropical rainforest were lost. That is 82,191 acres a day– the equivalent of 43 football fields a minute

For those where the only apple device is an iPhone and those people bought the iPhone 15 and traded in or sold their previous model…yes.
You know what would've prevented that? Apple not choosing to use a connector where the only device those people would use it with is an iPhone. Otherwise, they'd still have uses for that iPhone cable. Fortunately, that will be the case going forward. Someone trading in their iPhone 15 can now repurpose their USB-C cable it came with, thus helping the environment. Eventually Apple can also stop shipping phones with a USB-C cable, thus helping the environment, or at least that's how they'll spin it.

Over the weekend, Apple leaker and prototype collector Kosutami claimed that Apple has decided to halt production of FiveWoven accessories over durability concerns. In a further update, the leaker has now suggested we might yet see one more round of FineWoven products in a season of new colors before Apple finally says farewell to the material for good.

iPhone-15-Pro-FineWoven-feature.jpg

Last September, Apple stopped selling genuine leather accessories in favor of a more environmentally friendly "FineWoven" material. The company describes FineWoven as "luxurious and durable microtwill," and sells FineWoven iPhone cases at $59, MagSafe Wallets at $59, AirTag holders at $35, and Apple Watch bands at $99.

Many customers consider FineWoven products to be subpar compared to the leather Apple cases they replaced, and claim that the fabric is prone to scratches, stains, and discoloration. If today's update is correct, Apple may have to brace itself for more unhappy FineWoven customers.

Kosutami is known for revealing accurate information about FineWoven accessories in the past, so their latest claim should not be discounted. FineWoven accessories in new color options were absent from Apple's spring refresh, so perhaps their swan song could come in September when Apple releases the iPhone 16 lineup.

You know what else would have prevented that? The EU not micromanaging connectors. But all is not a total loss.

I bought a new apple usb-c charger, a two foot long usb-c cable and a lightning to usb-c dongle.

What happens if a pre-iPhone 15 user moves to Android? They've got a useless cable, even without EU intervention. The reality is that moving to a universal standard connector is a net-positive when considered with a long-term view. There is simply no escaping that reality, period. You must have really enjoyed the days when seemingly every phone had their own unique connector.

After inserting the MagSafe plastic core for iPhone 12 all Apple cases were sub compared especially to the old leather cases. That’s also partly true for silicon.

But it shouldn’t be government imposed— let the market do it. The real boss move here is if Apple had made a faster version of Lightning and opened it up to all manufacturers. It was a better physical connector anyway.

Clearly the market (err Apple) decided they weren't going to do that. It's within the EUs purview to reduce the e-waste generated in their territories, which this will do in the long run. Regarding the short-term, you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet. Apple actually had a faster version of Lightning, but they decided to only use it on a single iPad model I believe, before they rightfully decided that USB-C was the better choice. You know what annoyance I won't miss? Not being able to charge my iPhone with the same cable I charge my MBP and iPad with.

And you know how one of the nice things about USB-C and Lightning is that the connector is reversible? USB-C has the added benefit that the cable itself is reversible. No need to check whether I'm accidentally trying to plug the Lightning connector into the USB-C charging brick.

Pretty much a whataboutism. There is room for different standards in the world. For example US electrical outlets vs European 240. The lowest common denominator is not a net positive.

Its somewhat ironic that their push to save the environment has hurt the environment more by designing, producing, and shipping products that no one seems to have wanted.

We know this wasn't about saving the environment though, if it was, they would have kept the same design as the previous phones so people didn't need to buy a new case. That would have been the best way to save the environment.
If Apple truly cared about the environment their devices would be repairable…
