Many already know this except that it's meant for both creating and consuming content. You're thinking too small. The problem is that Apple has no deals in place for this device with the exception of books, newspapers & magazines (probably). There are no significant deals for subscriptions in place (there will be) for music, TV & movies.

This announcement in late January will be monumental but you won't see the true effects until 5-10 years from now. There is no immediate payoff in being an early adopter. Why:

-this is a 1.0 of the OS and it will eventually replace OSX as we know it. Apple will be basically rebuilding the Mac OS creating an end-around Windows to be the dominant OS through iDevices. The iPhone & touch is just the beginning.
-no subscriptions
-it is a closed system for now

There have been plenty of subscription rumors.

When we hear these rumors about 'a revolutionary new way to interact with it', 'there is a bigger learning curve' etc. we need to understand that gestures are what we use when we manipulate real word objects. For example, when you are reading a book, to turn to another page, you use gesture like 'hold the thumb in the top right hand corner, and with the index finger feel the next page and lift it up and then flip'. We do that without thinking about it. As a case in point, this particular thread has run into multiple pages. To go to the next page, I have to move the mouse pointer to a page number and click. Imagine a natural gesture similar to book flipping and the page comes up towards you and then you employ another natural gesture to flip it.

It is cool but very natural. It is a bit of a learning curve compared to what we have now but people can get used to it and before long it will be second nature.

That's not the point. It will take years to gain subscriptions for all the TV shows for all the channels and deal with movie subscriptions vs. cable rights of exclusivity. At this point it you cannot rent all TV shows right after it airs. With movies you don't have the same release dates as the disc version and if a channel is displaying a certain movie you will not see it available on iTunes.

Anecdote: A couple of months ago I saw 'Rachel Getting Married' available for an HD download for $19.99. I have every cable channel so I decided to wait until they showed it on Starz and see if I wanted to buy it. I really liked the movie so I went to iTunes and only the SD version was available for purchase.

Apple has a long way too go to convince these companies that this is the correct way.

This is a great point. People also forget how long it has taken us to adapt to keyboards and how we had to learn to use the current UI we have now. It's pretty common knowledge that older people have a very tough time adapting to the current PC UI.. this shows how it lacks intuitiveness. We are just conditioned to forget this. It always boggles my mind how people say a tablet won't work because if it's not a normal laptop - "how can you type on it?".

Well we seemed to do well with pads of paper and sheets of paper for long enough. I also believe that right-brain artistic people have been left on the curb with computers as they are designed now. As a sculptor myself I am a very tactile person. I strongly believe I would get much more use out of a more intuitive hands on user interface.

I truly believe this kind of interface will really expand our minds on how we can manipulate the elements of user interfaces.

As for adapting to the "gestures".. what if there were some simple little icons that showed you when and where to use different gestures? You could even have a little gadget to turn the signs on and off.

Fingerworks support

I own one of these fingerworks multi touch keyboards (the macntouch) and it just failed on me recently. Now I need some support and the company is gone for good. Sometimes I hate Apple, they treat the early customers like garbage. I think I am totally eligible for a free tablet. Maybe we'll be able to use it as a multi touch wireless keyboard, who knows?

LOL, good luck on getting a new Apple tablet from a company that no longer exists.

How long ago did you buy it? Didn't apple buy the company years ago?

Can too much hype kill this?

Expectations have hit critical mass. Apple will announce a ground breaking, industry changing device and I'll be as impressed as the day they announced the Apple leather iPod cover. It's like I've peaked at my Christmas presents.

The 27th sounds forgetful already. They've over saturated this hype machine. I was interested then CES made a few showings. Now it's just apathy.

You can only take so many hints and breaking revelations.

We say this every time, yet apple usually always has something that nobody sees coming. We will see, but if Apple's strong track record holds true, we are all in for some type of surprise.

When was the last time we got excited over an Apple keynote?

The new Nano held me for a few days. Otherwise I have to go back to WWDC 2007 or even 2006.

I don't know, I was pretty damn pleased with the new MBP line, but that may have been because I got exactly what I was looking for.

More often than not it's something you aren't looking for. I know you can't win them all but I'm not really expecting something worthwhile anymore.

We will see I guess.

Apple knows there is a TON of hype surrounding this, and I know that Steve isn't stupid enough to have a repeat of the ipod Hifi fiasco.

For those of us who follow this stuff. The vast majority of people are going about their business with little thought to what Apple has up their sleeve (Rolex?). Apart from the occasional slow-news-day story, it is just faint buzz. At least, until Steve does his song and dance in front of interested reporters.

That's a dose of reality that I needed. The mundanes don't really follow this to begin with. It's extremely hard for me to be surprised by technology anymore.

The waiting is rather tiresome though.

I can relate. My friend came to me a few months ago raving about this amazing new phone from blackberry. It was the storm, I laughed. I had been seeing that damn thing for months before that!

sure this will get everyone into a frenzy. I personally would like to see more transparancy in apples hardware delivery efforts. Not sure why all the need for cloak and dagger. Just attempt to keep pace with some of the new exciting technologies and i will be happy. I am looking to buy a new laptop in the next 3-5 months (taxes) and it can either be a mac to dual boot OS or a straight W7 machine. I could care less about a tablet.

I made this observation several days ago, but do I get any recognition? No! Do I want a cookie? Yes!

I should just go to bed...

The Apple tablet has been hyped up so much that people are expecting a very revolutionary device, with an equally revolutionary input method.

In reality, it won't be so advanced and a lot of people are going to be very disappointed.

Since you seem to have seen and used the device, care to share with us exactly what its going to be like??

someone has way to much time on their hands to unearth this. who cares? we haven't learnt anything new.

i just want new MBP's enough about this tablet.

And you obviously haven't "learnt" proper grammar.

Heres an idea. How about you just ignore the article and scroll past it. If you don't want to hear about Tablet rumors, then don't pay attention to them. No ones forcing you to read them or participate in the discussions.
