Can too much hype kill this?

About 3 people outside of the whole 'rumour mill' know about this.

One is my brother, the other my girlfriend.

I am sure someone else on here as told at least 1 person - there's your 3.

The general public will have no idea about it until they either see one in store or in an advert.

Geeks like use create all this "hype" but this hype really doesn't exist yet. We just keep talking about it over and over again.

Can too much hype kill this?

The "hype" is largely confined to tech sites on the Internet so far. This is far from the type of hype we saw with the introduction of the iPhone. Virtually every news show led with the iPhone story. I recall reading that Apple received over $1 billion in free advertising for the iPhone.

You can bet Jobs and company plan on upping the ante for this one.

OK ... one hit there ( versus many pages on the mainstream news sites )

They don't mention it every day ( like here on macrumors ) but there has been a stready precursor drumbeat built up over last 6-8 months. On slow news days or when there is something to discuss about Apple the "tablet" has been thrown into numerous mainstream stories as icing or a teaser.

Part of doing something with huge hype is spreading the "fuel" before you light the main charge. The fuel distribution has been in motion for a long while at this point.

The Steve: Shut it down, someone will notice, someone else will write about it, someone else will link to cached version, everyone else will see it and get excited about all the multi touch possibilities.

Clean out your office. You have one hour to leave campus. Next.

AMMG: Why?

Steve: Because the fanboys are running out of the topics to obsess over.
Need to give them new fodder to chew on and a pretense to rehash
the same points for several more days.

And all of that activity will draw in a few more mainstream news "sources" who may snag it as something new.

No. It's gonna dominate the charts just like the iPhone did. Apple products are based on sheer primacy in terms of design, build quality, superior OS and integration, not simply marketing.
The problem is that you come to a point where it's not a surprise anymore.

Not to mention what value the product is going to bring.

1 - Well, it's not a surprise only for us fringe Mac/PC users...99% of the world doesn't even know rumor sites exist;

2 - Likewise for tech news sites, where ordinary people may read about it but get little real info anyway;

3 - Nobody knows what the specs are, or what features Apple is gonna bring with the tablet. Therefore, disappointment will only come to those expecting too much out of nowhere;

4 - Remember the iPhone? It was WIDELY rumored, and still totally up to the hype. It continues to sell like bananas around the world. If Apple can do the same with the tablet, no one is gonna care about pre-launch days;

5 - Apple is master in creating demand, reinventing markets and demonstrating the added value of its products; if SJ is in his true form, forget all you've heard about slates and tablets until now, just as we all forgot how media players and smartphones were BEFORE the iPod and the iPhone.

I don't think it's a coincidence that this content was pulled. I think it sends exactly the message that Apple wants: Something is coming!

I think they've probably held off on taking the site down for the very reason that they didn't want to send a false message.

I have my doubts they can do that for a tablet. As unique as they can make it there are too many products to fight off. Apple even has to deal with their own products.

There is not a single tablet that succeeded in the market; besides, the only real examples you have today are from swiveling laptops on one side, and e-book readers on the other.

In my opinion, and considering its innovative record, Apple is set to recreate this whole segment and put everything else that has been launched so far in the trash. In other words, it's gonna be a bigger iPhone with added perks...and these perks will make the difference to the consumer.

Convertibles and slates barely make a ding in sales. The same with all-in-ones. The basic notebook or tower is still the standard unless you're Apple.

Super iPod Touch syndrome with product of the App Store is what scares me.

Again, it may be boring for you (or "us" geeks) the public doesn't scour the internet looking for information on upcoming apple products. WE are not apples target audience.

I'm not sure how I felt when I realized that Apple can't make a product to sell to Mac users.

What are you talking about? There are millions of regular mac users that apple sells plenty to. You realize we are a small minority of nerds who are on an apple technology forum for christs sake. WE are not TYPICAL mac users.

You come to a point where you want to give Apple your money but you still never buy anything from them. Blue waters and disposable incomes is where Apple is sailing. What's wrong with feeling left out?

I will be buying one to replace my old iBook G3, don't worry :rolleyes:
That's the problem. The only thing you end up buying is a replacement computer not because the old one stopped working but because it's that time again. It becomes too mundane.

Apple hasn't made a replacement for my Late 2007 MacBook. I know this is going to spin into some pointless spiel on hardware longevity but I get the same from my other computers. It's just becoming even rarer to look forward to anything.

Do you really want to compare your replacement needs having a 2007 MB, instead of a 2001 iBook G3 like me? Mine still works because it's an Apple...this doesn't mean it's not old for today's needs. And I am pretty sure that 7/8 years are more than a reasonable period for a replacement.

I am buying the tablet because it should be closer to my portable needs...and if the tablet is not it, I will gladly get a new MB.

I have an iMac G4 and a Power Mac G3 laying around too. I'm going to replace the iMac G4 with a hackintosh though. I'll be able to put my Snow Leopard disc to use for once.

I'll stay skeptical about the miracle tablet.

I'll stay skeptical about the miracle tablet.

Which is probably a good idea until it is released.

I have a feeling are setting themselves up for disappointment. Not that the device won't be awesome, but people are building it up to cure cancer or something.

It happens every press event.
Fan: "Man this is going to be the best revolutionary thing ever"
Apple: "That's it thanks for coming"
Fan: "OMFG, Apple sux. This is the worst product launch ever, what a waste!!!"

I was prepared for a letdown and CES from Microsoft and they delivered. Though they did reinforce why Windows Media Center is so awesome. They needed to focus more on their product strengths rather than a menagerie of products from their hardware partners.
