3G 16GB:

1. Safari crashes a lot (2.0.1 levels), especially, strangely, on this site

2. Sometimes, I have to press the home button at the end of a call to clear the caller's picture and return to the home screen, otherwise it just stays there with the bar at top and bottom, but no text or buttons.

3. I've found a couple of times, when I switch back from silent mode to ring using the side switch, it's still only on vibrate when I receive a call. If I go into settings/sound, the volume slider is at 0, even though it was on full volume before I switched to silent mode.

Overall 2.1 hasn't done much for me. I'd already disabled backups using the terminal command weeks ago. The contacts lag was really minor and didn't bother me as I only have a 100 or so names, not the 1000's that some guys have here. My 3G reception issues are down to coverage much more than they'll ever be the phone's and I haven't have any dropped calls ever. This no-ring thing is pissing me off though, because the vibrate function is so feeble I miss calls. I've started checking the volume now, which I shouldn't have to do. Apple have the feedback.

Here's another one. SoMetimes, when I click a link and Safari opens a new window, when going back to the original window, the navigation arrows are greyed out and non-functional so I can't go back a page.

I really, really LOVED my 1st gen Iphone.

Now that Arn is working at MR full-time, I'd like to read some analysis. Why was iPhone 1G so good and iPhone 3G so bad? What is the root cause of these problems? You would think that with more time in development, iPhone 3G would offer a better experience than iPhone 1G (I assume Apple started working on iPhone 3G before it released iPhone 1G but maybe that's giving Apple too much credit).

Very intermittent mail fetch problems (POP3). It doesn't seem to fetch when the phone is asleep. I have to wake it up and go into mail to get it to fetch every few hours. I have reset my fetch interval from 15 to never back to 15, didn't help. I've got six POP3 inboxes to check and its a pain in the ass.

For folks who have been having general problems like Safari crashes, have you tried a reboot?

Hold down the Home button on the front and the Off/Wake button on top at the same time until the Apple logo appears. That fixed a lot of problems I had with apps crashing in 2.0.2.

It's better to hold down the sleep button and then slide to shut down. Wait ten secs and then restart.

The home/sleep method force quits the OS and reboots without any housekeeping being done first. It you do it too many times there's the potential to damage the OS and create more problems than you started with.

:)

GPS/MAPS Bug

I seem to have had a bug with my GPS & Maps application that I haven't seen hear. It seems Maps/GPS took some of the "operations" from my previous firmware (2.0.2) and mixed it with 2.1.

The "new" feature with MAPS in 2.1 was the settings feature, in which now you have to go to settings and turn it ON, before using MAPS or exiting MAPS and turning it ON and re-entering.

Here's how mine worked for a while...

1. Location Services = OFF (to conserve power)
2. Opened Maps & Hit the Locate Button
3. Pop-up "[Settings] [OK]" (I press settings and turn on LS)
4. I re-enter MAPS & Hit the Locate Button
5. Pop-up "[DON'T ALLOW] [OK]" (instead of going straight to pin-pointing my location I got that second pop-up)
6. I pressed [ALLOW] and it finally pin-pointed me.

After a week of uses the phone, I don't get that second pop-up anymore, weird. If I pressed DON'T ALLOW it wouldn't pin-point my location even though I had the LS ON from the previous step...

Wife's 3G stopped fetching from POP account, while my 3G is fine. Same POP server (different accounts obviously).
