All joking aside, I'm sure these laptops will appeal to some people.

When visiting a friend of mine in Bournemouth (South England) I commented on her mothers laptop, which was on a desk in the side of the house. She told me that her mother had never moved the laptop since the day she'd brought it into the house. So I commented that she'd have been better off getting a desktop if she doesn't move it anywhere. My reply was a strange look that said 'have you gone mad, are you completely stupid' and then she said, but she wanted a laptop.

So for those people who defy logic, I'm sure there is a market for a 19" laptop.

Also there are instances where I'm not very mobile with my 12" Powerbook, and could quite comfortably sit there with a 19" monstrosity sitting on my lap. I think I'd also find one handy for sales presentations, but for day to day lugging about I think I'd find it a bit of a chore.

i might just vaguely consider the 17" because of screen estate (i use FCP, Motion and similar constantly), the 15" just wasn't quite enough.. but 19" is just plain TOO BIG.

what I personally really miss on MacBooks is the lack of options in displays.. I'd certainly welcome 1680x1050 in 15.4" and 1920x1200 in 17".. I'm fine with small pixels, I miss the desktop area the most.. right now I run on 14" at 1400x1050 and don't want to go for lower..

If it was quad-core I'd buy it!

The screen real-estate (17 or 19) is also sweet for students... instead of switching apps, you can put up all your pdf/research/notes for side-by-side comparison. Invaluable for paper writing.

But you can forget about typing class notes...

ummm... well your currently running a lower resolution arent you? I also wont mind smaller pixels and a bigger overall resolution, but they can go overboard and decrease visibility of objects on screen, guess we will have to wait for resolution independance before that problem is gone.

I understand that a 17" portable does offer some degree of portability, but I would guess that most are buying this machine to primarily serve as a DTR with perhaps occasional portable sessions.

I found with my DTR, it was fully portable for intra-house excursions which was of use many times. That said, I much prefer my Intel iMac.

There are two factors here. Weight and footprint.

Weight is a non-issue unless you have a lot of extra gear. Otherwise it's damn light!

The footprint, however, is bad for coffee tables, lecture desks... basically a lot of places you won't be encoding video. :p

Happy camper

We got ours yesterday a full week before it was scheduled to arrive.

I played with it for a few hours, and I couldn't be happier. No whine at all and no heat issues. After 3 hours or so it was just slightly warm to the touch.

We got it as a desktop replacement, so weight and size are non-issues for us. I can't imagine using it as a "portable" though.

LOL brilliant...

im a proud owner of a 15' macbook pro...and i think 15" is the perfect size its...well portable hehe

i had a pc 17" laptop apart that it was heavy as **** etc...it was just way to big in screen size...fair enough for watching movie its great...but to have it on the go all day long i think 15" are way better

i even bring my 15"mbp when i dont need it hehe...just in case maybe i want to sit in a park and surf the web or whatever when im in city centre's

19" i still be able but would be a bit more of a hassle

Would anybody here seriously buy a 19" MBP if one existed? I wouldn't even buy a 17"

Immobile laptops are perfect for small houses or small flats like wot we get in England. Far more tidy too - can be folded away, and fewer cables.

Even iMacs take a lot more room than laptops - seperate keyboard, mouse etc, and screen can't be folded down. Laptops don't dominate a room so much - important if you want a house to look like a home and not an office.

One final thing - laptops hold resale value better - I pay prices for old ones I'd never pay for desktops.

I do recommend to most of my mates that they buy laptops not desktops.

(another point is laptops are easier to take to your offspring for virus cleaning / sorting out / showing how to use folders)

19"... MASSIVE!

I'm going to be honest with everyone here... Apple probably has a 19" MacBook Pro in the works or at least is strongly considering one.

My 15" is huge enough. Anything bigger and I'd never want to take it anywhere. My 12" PowerBook was perfect for notes in class... the 15" MBP doesn't even fit properly on desks at my school. This is why I can't imagine anything larger than this size.

I'm also on my PowerBook at the moment. My MBP is currently Handbraking a DVD. 1024x768 is a huge pain now. :)

Oh I can't wait to see someone unpack their 17" MacBook! Why does this website post such inane details? And why do people watch a video of someone unpacking a computer? They are not unpacking the worlds largest diamond or some work of art.

I ordered a 17" MBP (should arrive on the 15th May). I need the high resolution screen. I currently have a 15" 1.33GHz Powerbook. From what I've seen on the Apple website, the physical dimensions of the 17" are only 1" wider and 1" deeper than the 15.4"... so for just that small amount of extra size, I think the extra features/screen size is worth it.

MacBooK Pro unusable for me

I am a photographer - and I am on the road a lot. I use4 my 15" PowerBook in cars, airplanes - in Europe - and in 4X4 vehicles in the middle of nowhere.

I use the iGo (Juice) power system to run the PowerBook for ANY power source. It has been perfect.

I would love to get the new 17" MacBook Pro - or even the 15" version - but I will NOT order one until Apple lets 3rd parties (like iGo) make a power adapter for the MacBook Pro series. The MagSafe can NOT be used from a 12 volt source at present.

Yay. Now where's my 12" 'Book? And I'm not getting a 13-inch iBook; I want something that has most of the features of the 15" in a small size.

I think the MBP is quite a nice work of art.

Just get a power inverter. That works great for my Powerbook and there's no reason it should'nt for MBP. Just be sure to get a high enough watt-rated one so it can power your machine.

my gf can barely handle 17", she's gonna freak if i get a 19"er.... she won't be walking for a week

Says Apple. "Mobile users will love the new MagSafe Power Adapter...."

I Love it NOT !!!!!

Does Apple plan to make their own 12 volt/car-air adapter??? If not, why not release the plug for other developers?

What idiot at Apple planned the ultimate portable workstation for mobile photographers or video (or audio) workers - and forgot about the source of power?? This is NUTS.

Forget the power inverter for MacBook Pros

No! They will NOT work on airplanes - they blow the fuse.

Why go from 12 volts to 120 volts wih an inverter - and then back to low voltage DC with the Apple power brick? The second law of thermodynamics will win every time!

Apple dropped the ball here!

I would seriously consider a 19" MacBook Pro, and I am a 5'2" woman.
I live both in Europe and in the US, and 95% of the time use the computer from home -- don't lug it around town and don't want an external monitor to clog up my desk space at home, hence want the largest screen I can get.

When I do move it it's in my car where I don't care if I have a 17" or 19" bag lying around. The few steps from the car to my office or home are not a problem, and I'd LOVE to have a 19" screen I could move from the US to Europe with no problem. The 19" would still fit inside a carry-on bag.

So... since I don't use an external monitor *and* don't really lug the MacBook around on foot, I would be very interested in a 19", actually. I guess different people just have different needs, and more choice is generally good for the consumer, no?
