17" MBP Doesn't Stand Up To Dual 2.7 GHz PPC Comparison

from xlr8yourmac.com. "Hi Mike, Just an update on my new 17" MBP 2GB 7200 100GB that came via FedEx this morning. First things first. Mac OS X performance and apps. Oh boy is this thing fast. My main computer is a G5 Dual 2.7GHz with 8GB ram and will be used as the comparison to the 17MBP.
Boot time to desktop:
Dual 2.7GHz G5: 36 sec
MacBook Pro 17inch: 8-11 sec (not a typo)

iDVD 30 min DV to DVD and burn:
Dual 2.7GHz G5: 36 min
MacBook Pro 17inch: 39 min

1080P trailer playback 3 movies simultaneous 24 FPS:
Dual 2.7GHz G5: 18 FPS
MacBook Pro 17inch: 10.4 FPS (QT crashed twice, but ran the 3rd time).

MS Word load 4000 pg document with photos 170MB: Dual 2.7GHz G5: 19.4 sec
MacBook Pro 17inch: 32 sec"
How can this impress anyone? This report makes me NOT want a 17" MBP. It appears to me to be dog slow. Am I misreading something?

In the morning: Thank you for setting me straight Alden.

I think that it's pretty impressive that a laptop performs this well against a behemoth of a tower that has the fastest G5 chips that Apple has ever sold.

- much faster booting
- DVD encode *and* burn about 10% slower
- HD playback - WTF? 3 at once, I'd be much more interested in 1 at once
- about 2/3 the speed of the behemoth running emulated PowerPC code

Impressive. Not something to get one to immediately eBay the maxi-tower and get a laptop, but impressive.

And still no numeric keypad!!!!!

I checked out the 17" MBP at the Burlingame, CA Apple store last night. I pulled off the power cord, let it sit for a short time and checked the battery indicator. It showed 4 hours 20 minutes. My 15" 1.25 Al PB never showed more than 3:30.

Just got mine today. Fedex came around 9:30 am and I was home but I didn't hear the doorbell ring and so I had to wait ALL day and pick it up at the fedex facility after 6pm. Talk about torture! LOL.

I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary. Not too hot and no whine. The screen is very nice. This is one big laptop, but I'm not complaining. :D I'm a new mac user so I'm trying to learn my way around the OS still, but so far everything looks good.

Anyways, it's a wonderful machine. Much, much better than my old crappy dell.

holy jesus that is amazing, now in reality theats like 2:45-3:15 but still wow im on a dell inspiron 8200 that needs a new battery so desperately that it lasts literally 10 minutes after being unplugged. Its rather amusing:rolleyes:

The faster 64-bit Merom chips will be out in August, so get ready to be sucked.

I noted this. so......

So, how's it been the last two weeks?

My Macbook Pro 17" finally shipped the day I went and bought 2 (!) Macbook 2Ghz black models (as well as 7200RPM drives and 2GB RAN for each). It came out LESS then my maxed-out custom Macbook Pro. Apple was really great with everything and let me ship the Pro back. (I had called over 5 times about it...faced with shipping delays).

This should tide me over fine until the next Power Macs, or until Apple comes out with a lighter, smaller, faster model ;) (I still love my 12" Rev D Powerbook!)
