We all know that "it will focus on gaming" doesn't go along well with "it will have its own App Store"!

Focus on gaming? using an Apple silicon chip and not Intel which is where all the games are usually found.

HUH.

Knowing Apple, I bet they could potentially help you in some ways I can't think about right now. Think "A.I.-powered artificial eyesight", I'm just not sure how information could be given to you apart from audio feedback and voice messages.

Hopefully they're talking about actual see-through 4K displays, otherwise the potential lag between what you see and what's happening could be disorienting/nauseating, even if you're not aware of it. It could be okay for something like a headset that you're not supposed to wear and walk around with all day long, but for the future Apple glasses that's going to be pretty much a requirement.
I mean, the quest 2 has horrible pass through and I can walk around with it

If I'm not able to see through the screen without the use of a camera, then this kind of AR is not for me.
Yeah, I think your missing the big picture.

Try the occulus quest 2 in pass through mode. Now imagine that 4K in each eye in full color with no delay.

Transparent screens barely even exist mate, video pass through, IS the AR you’re gonna get for the next 5 years at least

This thing will be groundbreaking.

4K pass through. You won’t be looking at the world with your eyes anymore, instead you’ll be viewing them through a a camera with augmented reality layer!

The selling point will be a simple commercial:
this is my spouse - picture Joy Behsr or Danny DeVito

and this is my spouse with Apple glass, picture Megan Fox or George Clooney.

j/k. I can't see myself using this, but I am probably not in the right demographic. They are kind of clunky for something someone might wear all the time so I can only imagine this isn't how they would look IF Apple were to design them. Maybe as an alpha version or for gaming, but not a day to day thing. Eventually a less clunky day to day version.

It reminds me of Steve Jobs with a rotary dial iPhone mock-up IF it was day to day.

I thought it was just a buggy implementation joke given some of the 1.0 bugs that Apple (every tech company) has had.
e.g. Penguin math errors, AT&T doing an update which disabled long distance for half a day in 1990, Apple Maps, Mars Climate Orbiter using the wrong units etc.

For one I think it could bring a more immersive AR experience than any other devices Apple makes. By such it as huge potential that I have no idea how it will be realize but they might.

Granted these are only guesses at what it would look like, but it's weird that they keep calling it mixed reality, but presenting it like an Oculus. AR only through a high density camera view will probably make registration of generated content to the real world much, much easier, but has a few drawbacks-- for one, it will take time for people to adjust to essentially having their eye spacing forcibly changed when they put the goggles on and off, and it really prevents using this in the world outside the living room.

Still, probably best to start where the most likely content will be-- games and porn media. I don't see how Facetime works with this except via animoji. There's no camera to view the user unless you need a phone selfie camera set up to look at you wearing the goggles that will then paint the goggles out-- but that feels really complicated for a simple call.

if they add phone capabilities to this it will kill the iPhone and might be the hottest thing to buy.

I know I'll be downvoted by true believers of AR/VR but this is one area that has been investigated at one form or another for 40 years and it still hasn't fulfilled the exuberant promises proponents make.
I'm someone who is rather bullish on VR. I don't see it replacing smartphones. If anything, it is more likely to replace laptops/tablets for many users.

The "40 years" thing is just silly. Consumer VR is only just over 5 years old, and standalone VR is just over 2 years old. (I'm only including systems that can track head position and rotation in 3D space).
The first realtime 3d-accelerated graphics were only 25 years ago, and that was in resolutions much too low for VR. VR has only become feasible in the past decade or so, because the needed technology just didn't exist before then. (fast 3D graphics and high resolution, high refresh rate displays.)

Apple fan or not, it will be very interesting to see how Apple plans to deliver this thing. The Apple glasses will no doubt be a hit but this mixed reality headset sounds like a tougher sale…

Gaming, media and communication sounds great in theory but let’s face it, there are several high end VR headsets out there for under $1000 (this Apple headset is rumored to be $2000+) and they have a much better ecosystem. PS5 VR will no doubt be $500, the next VR headset from Meta will no doubt be under $1000.

If Apple plans to charge this much they will need to do something groundbreaking. I’m skeptical but definitely looking forward to it. Especially as a developer.

Edit: it will also be interesting to see what happens to the mixed reality headset when the more streamlined Apple Glasses come out. Will they be merged into a single product or will Apple try to support both separately? Interesting times ahead.
The mixed reality one is the only one i see with any kind of consumer support. The Glasses, if they ever come to market will go the way of Google Glass.

Well, most VR gaming today is done on ARM chips, so if anything, Apple's switch to their own silicon is a good thing. PC gaming has decades of momentum behind it. VR gaming, not so much.
But Meta/Facebook/Oculus have bought up many of the most successful studios/games, such as Beat Saber. So if it's a $300 headset with Beat Saber, vs a $1000+ headset without it, Apple will need to fund some good games. And have some decent controllers. If they mess something up, it will be controllers.

And pay 2-3k for such a device???
Sure, there will be some but it is not a killer use case
I’m thinking this would be one of the “legs” of a multi-pronged strategy — for example, gaming, video consumption, 3D modeling/planning, and communication. Most Apple devices appeal to multiple use cases, rather than relying on a single, stand alone one.

"Apple's VR headset will focus on the things all other VR headsets are focused on"
Bold prediction.
I do think Apple may be able to do something better for media streaming, though. The reviews for Amazon Prime Video and Netflix on the Quest are pretty bad. If Apple could put together something that "just works", I think that could be a big advantage. But some of those apps are pretty bad even on the Apple TV.

I think fitness is the one thing this "rumor" is missing. It can be easier to exercise and stay motivated when it is gamified in a VR environment.

Oculus rift 2 was the single best piece of hardware i have ever purchased, it is truly revolutionary what it can do to many categories like personal fitness, vr gaming, sports...that is despite the terrible low res graphics and processor, ****** games, and facebook's nonexistent ability to market. Supernature on oculus single handily changed forever how i workout, nothing else seemed to be worth it anymore, not in person training, not those crappy video based workouts (ironically including apple fitness). And the feeling when you look down and see your lightsaber goes up and darth vadar walk towards you is indescrible. Or as a table tennis player for 30+ years and have the headset able to replicate complex moves and serves almost 1:1 in vr.....

I can only imagine what apple is able to achieve releasing a similar vr set but with super beefed up hardware + graphic, billions of apple users and hundreds of thousands game developers already in the eco system ready to go.

if you haven't tried it, dont under estimate. If apple do it right, it will be a truly iPhone type event. Super excited for this.

How does your headset deal with sweat when exercising? I've killed sweat and waterproof headphone while working out, I can only imagine that something like this would last a week tops before tapping out.
