Apple makes more money from gaming than does Sony.

and these games are mostly made on PCs with game engines that favor PC development and many run on a C# translation layer. Microsoft has apple's frameworks documented better than apple. this keeps developers heavily in the not apple camp. the only reason mobile games get ported is because it's low effort. you can't even interface a Mac with the oculus.

just saw a question in game devs today. an eager Mac dev asked how to make vr games for oculus on his laptop, the majority of the other devs advice was to ditch apple completely and get a pc. that's the general vive amongst the gamedev community and it won't change unless apple opens up development across platforms.

swift was a nice step but it stopped short on it's promise. it's completely useless on windows even tho it can run on windows. meanwhile Microsoft has their IDE in development for all platforms including iOS and Mac. almost every game dev develops in c#, even for iOS games.

Anecdotes vs a two billion dollar lead in game profits. I’ll take the latter.

it's not anecdotes. most of that money is thanks to unreal and unity. not apple's tools. apple make keep making money on ****** games but don't expect stuff like resident evil vr to make it over.

I'd be pretty happy if this could replace a laptop screen, so that I could actually get work done on the airplane without contorting myself into knots.

Hmm that’s an interesting view. I’d like to know why you think that (not trying to sound mean. I honestly do want to know why you have that view just out of interest).

In my thinking, the AR glasses would be the easier sale. Basically like a glasses version of the Apple Watch. I can already imagine getting GPS directions, holding and placing virtual items, having an AR group call, maybe even being able to virtually extend the screen of a MacBook Pro. It would basically be like a hud. As long as they are priced under $999 I can see them being popular, $599 and they will fly off shelves.

This mixed reality headset is estimated to cost $2000… with a focus on games, media and communication… If we just take gaming. Apple is not really associated with higher level AAA gaming. Perhaps that can change but for now, the VR scene is ruled by Sony, Valve and Facebook through Oculus; all of whom have long relationships with AAA game publishers, an extensive game ecosystem and offer VR headsets for under $500.

For media consumption and even communication, we have to consider the fact that this mixed reality headset will obviously be far heavier than any pair of glasses. Wearing it for long periods of time will be uncomfortable making it far more of a niche item that can only be used in short burst.

Again as a developer it sounds very exciting. Possibilities could be very cool. However as a consumer, I just can’t imagine that many people shelling out $2000 for this. I can definitely see far more people being willing to spend $500-$1000 on some sleek AR glasses that are comfortable enough to wear all day.
I see the AR ones as a niche tool for specific industries, not as a consumer facing product.
The mixed reality ones have already proved to have more staying power and developed a market. They only need a company like Apple to take it mainstream.
I don’t even know anyone who wanted to even try Google Glass or variants from others. It’s just not gonna happen in the consumer space. Wearing them on the daily to me sounds like torture.

For those of us who don’t like voice control, nor want a vision-restricting gizmo strapped to our faces, how exactly will this replace the iPhone?

It won't.

The render below is a VR/MR headset with niche users who don't mind wearing a strap-on on their face and looking like a dork. It feels absolutely awful to use these things for over an hour and really screws up your face and hair at the back of your head. I had to shower and blow dry every time I finished using Oculus just to get my hair style back.

You walk around the street with this on your face you'll be walking into a lot of things and get run over by a bus so it is an indoor device only.

Covid isn't going away anytime soon. Imagine wearing that AND a mask. Look ridiculous.

AR should look like a totally normal pair of glasses with nothing impeding the user.

Apple gets 70% of its App Store Revenue from Game Apps, & that 70% comes from less than 10% of ALL App Store consumers.

As such, makes perfect sense that Apple would target gaming first, in-large-part, so they don't lose that 10% to Meta's AR Headset !

Would be a very BIG deal if they did !

Meta has the clear Pole Position right now !

Zuck is obsessed with it, & in Engineering, that is a very good thing !

Do you remember the early days of Apple ? it was NO different !

Gaming options should be similar from both Apple & Meta.

It's Media where it could be different, BIG time !

I suspect Meta will allow Porn AR, while Apple won't.

And here, this could be the deciding factor that determines who wins in the end.

IMO, Apple could win in Education & with Medical, while Meta wins overall, with their Porn position !

Make NO mistake, the internet had its early success in Porn !

I have NO idea what an AR Porn App may look like, but can ONLY image, & I suspect alot of people will investigate it when it goes Live, which "could" tilt things in Meta's favor ... time will tell.

Meanwhile, Back on the Farm, still NO mention of the Dec 9th App Store change from macrumors.com ... very puzzled as to why ! ... anybody know ?

We live in exciting times ... the App Store is about to be Broken Up, & NON-Game Apps will have, for the first time ever, a chance to Blossom ! ... remember, Tim's Apple is obsessed with Game Apps ! ... maybe they're doing that because they know what's about to hit them !

Hello Fail Videos

This thing will be groundbreaking.

4K pass through. You won’t be looking at the world with your eyes anymore, instead you’ll be viewing them through a a camera with augmented reality layer!

You wake up in hospital with a bad concussion. The doctor asks if you remember anything.

'Did you see what your attacker looked like?'

'I was walking down the street in Augmented Reality enabled and this Sailor Moon school girl was walking towards me with a smile.'

It won't.

the fact that Facebook's presentation did everything to avoid showing a person actually wearing these things should tell you enough. and Anyone who believes Apple will make these things as lightweight as prescription glasses is huffing too much copium.

for the love of God; please let this be compatible to PC STEAM VR; I hate quest 2 need something of an upgrade that isn't index or hp g2

But they have about zero game that can take advantage of the rumored headset.
What are the benefits of playing bejeweled 2 in 2x 4K VR?

What can Apple do to convince devs to port/develop AR/VR game for a headset that basically no one will use given its price? We've seen how that has worked out for Mac games.

As much as as I trust Gurman (he's been dead accurate about the MacBooks), this rumor makes little sense.

This may happen only if this headset can take an external video source, which is not rumored. And even if it does, I don't expect this device to be compatible with Windows.

I see this as the next big step in computing. Oculus users have seen what 300 bucks gets you. It is an imperfect but amazing view into the future. The core of the experience is undeniable but the OS is kludgy, the resolution is lacking and the comfort is poor. The browser is functional but weak and IO is limited. It leaves you thinking what if...

Apple will certainly what if the hell out of this market. 4K for each eyeball alone will be amazing. You know that they are going to produce a sized, comfortable product. OS, no one does it better. Pair it with a fully capable browser, advanced connectivity, productivity software, existing input devices, and you have the ultimate portable work machine. If and when they nail the comfort and the graphic capabilities, this becomes a creative's dream.

What was missing from the three main categories mentioned? Work. This is for sure coming.

People need to realize that Mark Gurman is essentially writing fiction for Bloomberg. Since Apple doesn’t share top-secret news externally, these are just rumors and Mark uses his own imagination to concoct his own stories about what he thinks Apple will release in the future. And it’s a really good thing he doesn’t actually work for Apple, because a bad idea like this would bomb in the marketplace.

I think releasing a device which is not mass-market in price would be a mistake. 2000 USD would make it a pricey toy and set the software marketplace up to fail, 400 would be more in the ballpark that it needs.

He has sources at cupertino.
He's the one who predicted that MacBooks would have 8 performance cores and 2 efficiency cores at a time everyone expected 8+4, and he predicted the correct number of GPU cores (many doubted the release of a 32-core GPU up until the event).
I think he was also the first to predict the return of magsafe and HDMI ports. I also believe he's the one who leaked the "M1 Max" and "M1 Pro" names.

Sure, one may say that anyone could have predicted that. But the fact is, he's the one who did and he has a >85% accuracy.

Amazing and extremely expensive. Even if it was cheap, VR will remain niche for a very long time. Most people don't want to have a displayed strapped to their head. Immersive gaming is not for everyone.
