I'm Jose, the reader mentioned in the article. Just got the shipment notice about an half hour ago from Apple. Will arrive tomorrow via OnTrac.

Unfortunately, the Pencil shipping delays ruined my spontaneous purchase of the iPad Pro. Now I can wait until after Christmas.

I just walked in and out of the Apple Store (St. Louis Galleria) with a Pencil. It's not fair to those people who preorder, but frankly I like that a few people per day per store can get lucky even though they didn't preorder, while the patient people remain patient. You can wait a few weeks or you can try your local store from time to time and then cancel the preorder if you find it locally. As a former AppleCare employee I know this doesn't apply to everyone because many people are too far from a retail store.

Actually he's not.

Oh wait, you're not only wrong, you're wrong twice!

For capacitive (finger) touch, the iPad Pro samples at twice the rate of previous iPads — 120 times per second instead of 60. With the Pencil, though, the iPad Pro samples 240 times per second. The way the Pencil works requires cooperation with the display, and so there’s no way this Pencil could be made to work with existing iPads. The Pencil is not iPad Pro-exclusive out of product marketing spite — it’s exclusive to the Pro because the two were engineered in coordination with each other. And if Apple had designed the Pencil differently, to allow it to work with existing iPads, there’s no way it could have had this level of accuracy, because the tip would have needed to be broader and capacitive. (The Pencil’s tip is not capacitive at all — it doesn’t register as a touch at all on any other iOS device.)

I would love to go back to about 2000 and tell everyone '...and in 2015, Apple shall sell a pencil. And it shall cost $99!'.

With that in mind, I would like to say that in about 2030, Apple shall sell a piece of string. And it shall cost $500.

it's not a pencil though.. that's just the name of the product. so of course you would confuse the crap out of people in 2000.

I remember how stupid I was in 2000 ... never could have conceived of an electronic pencil! (/s) Never mind that over 20 years earlier I began to learn manual drafting (with pencils, naturally), and realized immediately that most of my new skills would be replaced by CAD within a decade or so. Which of course they were.

Perhaps if you'd told me about an Apple pencil in 1980 I would have wondered how it could function with the Apple ][ ;). Actually, I would have merely wondered what other new machine or computer tablet accessory they'd devised to work with it. By 1985 or 1990 - let alone 2000 - I would simply assume it was an electronic pencil for drawing (as would most people). I also would have marveled at the low $99 price! (no /sarc!)

well, if you use the term "Stylus" then in 2000 every one would know.

$99 for a stylus -- only Apple can charge the ridiculous price.

Uh. He said the iPad pro screen measures different pressure. It does not. It has a higher sample rate when the pencil is used. So he's wrong. And so are you twice.

I thought Apple said the ipad pro has new display sensors to allow the pencil to work. Older ipads would not have this.

It has a higher sample rate when the pencil is used but that's it. It should still be compatible with other iPads. All the other Bluetooth stylus are.

If regular iPads don't support the higher sample rate, seems like the pencil will not works as well … possible latency and such? If that's the case, you know Apple won't allow it to work on older devices if it impedes the intended user experience. Seems that's how they roll.

$99 would be ridiculous if there was a competitor that offered something equivalent or even close for less. I am not aware of anything that can match the performance of the Apple Pencil.

I spoke with a few designer friends who have those ridiculously expensive wacom tablets. Each one said for what you get, $99 for the Apple Pencil is very cheap.

FUD master, read the DF link. It's a totally different thing than what you're saying. You're ultra-super-out-of-this-world wrong.

What is the return policy for 2015 holiday season? I heard from several agents that it started on November 1st. But I still don't see anything on their website.

Items purchased on Nov. 11 or later appear to have a Jan. 8th return date (probably varies by country).

It's printing on store receipts and while it wasn't on my Nov. 11 on-line order (in store pickup) receipt, it was confirmed by chat and if I go on-line and click on return, it says I have until then Jan. 8th.

Honestly, I get why they didn't.... but they should have sold the Apple Pencil with the Pro. As in, in the box with every iPad pro and then sold them additionally for people who lose/break/want a spare. Much in the same way you get a charger with the iPad. The pencil adds a lot of "pro" functionality to the iPad pro and without it, it is largely just a bigger iPad with some better specs. Which I know has its appeal, but at their price point it should have been standard with every one of them imo. But since they chose to ship it separately they should have waited until later in November to release the Pro and the Pencil in better stock and availability at the same time.

I said this EXACT thing to the Apple Store rep I spoke with today. It makes no sense! No one is buying an iPad Pro and not the pencil, well maybe a small percentage are, but it's aimed at creative pros. It's just crazy. Typical post-Jobs Apple. I have the iPad and no Pencil (with an expected delivery date of between today and Nov 27th and still mine hasn't slipped into "preparing to ship" and it's still "processing") and it's so lack-luster, just a bigger iPad. That Pencil tho, that pencil will bring it to life! I've tried every stylus out there and nothing compares... My Cintiq is going on eBay! Bull malarkey man, bull malarkey.

I hope you get your pencil sooner rather than later! I'm not getting a pro or a pencil myself, but it looks like an awesome combo for creatives and the like. I myself could even see using it in lieu of pencil and paper for note taking, if it weren't priced out of reach for that use case.

It is totally wrong for Apple to be shipping Pencils to stores be forcing filling orders for those who preordered the first day. Way to tick off your most loyal customers, Angela!
