No, Lion will have no internet access whatsoever. And it will come with armed guards to stop you if you try to physically bring a disc to the machine. Get real.

Yes, but what I mean is if Lion is gonna be as "closed" as the iPhone,
you can only download something true the App-store

So is the Mac-app store gonna be the only place to download apps on lion ore not?
I hope not.

There will always be boxed software for those unable to download large files. I'd like to see cheaper prices with digital downloads at least!

Apple always said that the Mac App Store is and would be optional in the future. There's no need to start panicking now, as it stands, anyone trying to say that Apple wants to lock down OS X is in full FUD mode.

I truly did NOT think I would use the Mac App store. But as I was browsing it last night, I actually found it quite nice to look in one place for software. Ended up purchasing a few small games and some other design software.

We'll have to see if my interest lasts over time, but again, it was nice to surf the Mac App Store and I was pleasantly surprised on my first visit.

So you think the overhead on the physical media is less then a gallon of gas, in comparison to the digital distribution. Materials cost, package, shipping boxes, instruction booklets, disks. Cost to get the factory to stamp the disks. Then they need to fly (gas) from China to their destination country, then take a truck (gas) from the airport to a warehouse (rent), where they get sent on another truck (gas) to get to the store (rent) where they will be sold, the person that will sell you (wages) the product.

Yeah, that comes out to about $3 per unit over the cost of a server farm, which was probably already in use.

Yes, I do. Just like they have servers already, they have machines that make all that stuff already. Each disc is a few pennies, you can put hundreds or thousands of them in a crate. Hey a CD is $10 in the store. They wouldn't be profitable if production costs was > $1. The real costs are R&D. The real price is due to market demand, not costs.

Apple today announced that the Mac App Store saw over one million downloads in its first day of business
Good Lord. How many people are really this dumb?!?!? It's not like you couldn't get apps for the Mac last week or last month.

Wise up people. Boycott the Mac App Store. It's bad for you and it's bad for the development community for Apple to be stealing money that should be going to developers.

Absolutely FALSE. Anyone trying to say that Apple said the Mac App Store would be optional in the future is in full FUD mode. They have absolutely NEVER said that.

What's your definition of FUD? Do you find the status quo terrifying?

Epic win. Soon, more and more game apps will be released, and the Mac will be more of a gaming machine than it already is.

Valid argument. However, developers could be making more money with the Mac App Store through increased user awareness of their products and less cost spent on packaging, marketing and distribution as Apple is/will be a major distributor of their product(s). It may also cancel costs out, who knows? Time will tell.

All those costs are involved in the $5 DVDs and $10 Blurays at the store,so yea.

If you tried really really hard, you could get more clueless.

Hmmm, Apple only charges 30% to market, distribute, and sell applications. How is that bad for developers again?

Get your own website, pay for the bandwidth, set up to be able to collect money, and don't forget the marketing.

Well, Steve Jobs kind of did during the Lion preview.. He never promised it would be forever but he was very clear it'll be "just another" means of getting software.

That was in the same event where Apple were vocally supportive of Steam too. The idea of Apple-signed only installs is complete FUD at this stage, there is NO reason to think they'd do that at all.

.. It'd be funny seeing Adobe and Microsoft's reactions if that did happen though.

Just think of how many Mac users have NO IDEA about the App Store or even how to do a software update..
all Mac Users know about Software Update... it automatically checks weekly. unless they're on OS9...

I don't know if you've been living under a cave, but Apple's the star of the show... It's very hard to exist in society without hearing about iPads, MacBooks when "there's an app for that".

Google gives an entire operating system away for free. Facebook loses money in its operations, yet the company is worth billions. Over-the-air TV costs nada for a consumer to watch.

There are plenty of ways for apps to make money besides merely charging for the app.

A little late to respond. But it sounds like you want iAds in Mac App Store Apps.

Let's go over your list to confirm this:

1. Over-the-air TV - Ads
2. Google - Ads
3. Facebook - Losing money? Invoking their valuation as evidence of... profit? success? So are they make money or not?

Anyhow. So, iAds in Mac Apps! Great work!

Absolute baloney. You still don't get what the point of an App Store is, do you.

It's a dead-easy, brutally simple, one-stop shop to serve the consumer's app needs. All in one place, all the time. All showcased and categorized. That's the beauty of it. It's an extremely effective distribution model. It's also a boon for developers. Quality apps bring in serious money due to the kind of exposure EXPOSURE afforded by the App Store. That cut to Apple is peanuts compared to what devs can pull in with good material.

Developers PAY Apple in order to USE and take advantage of the benefits of this service. Get it?

Boycott this kind of service? LOL not on your life, pal. It's the best thing to happen to software sales in a very long time.

Yay for the app store!

Now I have somewhere to find good programs (PROGRAMS I SAY!) and then go to the developers web site and buy/download straight from them.
